I'm not Korean, I'm not british, I just happen to love both cultures and your channel. This episode really touches me as respecting your parents and giving back is something very important in my culture and dear to my heart. I love my parents. They have sacrificed so much and I sometimes get so frustrated that our current lifestyles with busy schedules, work stress and economic inflation make it hard for us to have (and offer to our parents) the same relaxed, happy abundance (by no means riches, but nothing lacking) in life we once had. Anyway... Alhamdulilah. I thank God for what we have and for keeping the two most precious people in the world in good health. May they have long, happy lives.

I don't think Koreans would fully understand just how "counter-cultural" (as Ollie's dad so eloquently put it) giving money to your parents is in British culture. It's not that it's taboo exactly, it's more simply that it would never occur to us for it to be an appropriate gesture. I think my parents would find it mortifying if I tried to do that for them. It's just not the done thing. My mother would very much be trying to give it back too; as politely as possible.
@VamLoveAndKisses
@VamLoveAndKisses 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, I have borrowed money from my parents in the past which was expected to be returned, but I don't think they would expect repayment for the cost of my upbringing (as much as I would love to be able to pay them back!). I also wonder if in the UK giving someone money as a gift can sometimes be seen a "cop out" instead of getting a thoughtful gift the individual may like. I don't personally see it that way but I know some people who do.

@@VamLoveAndKisses Yes, I think it can be seen as a weak gift in British culture. In Korean culture it seems to be a gesture meant to represent a desire that the person you're giving it to gets much more cash coming their way in the future; like it's an auspicious gift representing future prosperity. In the UK I think a lot of people consider it a lazy "I don't know enough about you to get you something personal" gesture. I know when I've given money to my siblings as a gift they've been a little... 'miffed', to say the least. Personally I love getting money, because then I can choose something I really want or need. Too often gifts are kind gestures but more or less useless clutter, and I'd much rather buy a replacement floor-mop, or a new screwdriver than get another box of scented candles and potpourri... heh.

The gift of 'cash' has been around in asian culture for almost as long as money has been around. For my wedding I mentioned it was an appropriate gift to the shock of my Western family and friends who considered it rude and thoughtless. I had to explain to them the cultural differences, traditions and meaning of money gifts. For weddings and babies' birth especially you are not just giving cash, it's the hope that you prosper, get a good head start to life, stability, luck, health and happiness.

@@kshr26 I think they mostly find it rude because they're nervous about how much to give. They don't want to offend or seem cheap by giving to little, but they don't want the stress of giving more than they can afford to impress people. So they get angry because I think they feel like being able to choose an actual gift, doesn't give away what their possible financial state is. They don't want to look poor or cheap, even if they are. It's seen as embarrassing. It might also be a little bit about the thought behind choosing a specific gift for someone. It seems thoughtless to just put money in a card. Especially if others have chosen something special. It may make them seem like they don't know the personal well enough to have chosen a thoughtful gift and that would be offensive. But personally, I think it's a much easier gift. I don't even care if it's not a lot. Just take what you would've spent on a gift and put it in the card in cash form.

@@vanessafernandez4427 puleez. do watch your mouth. maybe your parents. not mine nor the ones around me. Folks, Koreans in general give to their parents because as the video presented, we appreciate the unrelenting lifelong support we receive from the day we are born. Most Koreans have parents who would sell their homes in order to educate their children so that they might have the chance at a better life than their own. In Korean culture, the self sacrifice is cultural because of our difficult history. Parents feel a great responsibility in bringing a child into this world of hardship. Especially those who have had to suffer feel a certain amount of guilt when having a child and will do all during their lifetime to fill in the void this guilt creates. Good people in general want to do more for their own. It's a very loving, caring, reciprocating and cross-cultural relationship. My parents are very sensitive to my economic situation. They refuse to take and I insist on giving. Only a rotten relationship would force another to give money to the other. This has nothing to do with core Korean values or any other culture for that matter. To the youtuber, thank you for a heartwarming and lovely episode.
