A short vid now with some Chiltern Line DMUs. We start at Wendover back in 1986 and see the station before the A413 by-pass was built and some close up shots of the AEC engines on the units. Next we see NSE ones in action at Chalfont & Latimer and then Chorelywood in 1989. The units were in a mixture of NSE and BR blue & grey colours. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Casually setting back into the station because someone forgot to get off. Try that nowadays and both driver and guard are upstairs for tea and biscuits.

I remember riding on these both from Amersham to Marylebone and from High Wycombe on the other branch of the Chiltern (as it is now called) line. Those 115's were about 30 years old when this was filmed and were pretty clapped out by this time, just like the current 30 year old class 165's are getting now.

Indeed they were. They got driven pretty hard on this route as there was usually an electric A60 stock not far behind. However the engines were pretty robust all things considered.

Have noticed the occasional cl.108 DTC substituting in some of your other London DMU videos - just odd seeing a low-density coach in amongst the normal stock! At least they were able to knock together a train of stock designed to work together, nowadays one faultly coach means the whole train's out!

I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner LG1200, Cummins M11 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 77 Octagon and Every 37 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.14 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 18 Tonnes for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!!!! And Please do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please? The Chiltern Lines was unloved under BR, they didn't really want it. It was pushed back & forth between regions (ER and LMR) neither of whom wanted the cost of up-keeping it. Until Network SouthEast came along and Chris Green made the case for total route modernisation. Then the line was relaid, re-signalled and brand new trains introduced (Turbo's, not very good for enthusiasts but great for your average passenger) and it's not looked back since! But it started under Sectorisation which was one of the best things BR did, that system really got a grip on the railway and amde a large part of the system pay and get the subsidy down on the bits that never would (but we still needed to make the 'system' a system!).......

Gear changing is controlled by the driver, with guidance from "change up" and "change down" marks on the tachometer. Normally the driver would change up to second gear at 15 mph, third at 28 mph and fourth (top) at 40 mph. The tachometer goes past the "change up" mark at just under 60 mph in top gear and is almost off the scale if the train reaches its official maximum speed of 70 mph.

@@Housephonestimes4 I don't know what the actual figures are. I used to watch through the window between the passenger compartment and the driver, and the figures are not clearly marked enough to read from that distance. What is marked clearly is a yellow arc on the scale that the driver is supposed to keep the needle within when possible, except at idle. The engines do have rev limiting devices, that come into operation with a sort of spluttering sound if the driver applies power without having a gear engaged (which drivers sometimes used to do when starting the engines). With a microphone and an oscilloscope it would be possible to measure the engine revs from a sound recording. Clearly the revs can go about 15% beyond what they are at the "change up" mark.

I remember these and the distinctive exhaust note (Morris Minors have a similar trick) from Leicester to Birmingham New Street services in early 80's. As young spotters we christened them "Bog Rolls" as the jouncey ride over jointed rails was as comfortable as using the "Bronco" toilet paper provided onboard. Modern rolling stock has no atmosphere compared to these, regardless of how improved the ride is or how few seat squab springs you can feel sticking into your backside. How many miles did these units run during their service life? So robust, those AEC straight six engines would keep going and going, only beaten for clag in the old days by certain examples of 31/1 around Nuneaton.

These are mostly class 115's which pretty much stayed on the Chiltern their whole life (side note-the timetable number for the Chiltern Line is 115 as well!) but there were other classes similar to these probably with different engines (there were Leylands, BUT's ect) and all much more fun to ride on and with decent seats to sit on and sink into rather than the hard crunch of a class 700!!!

I would guess that these trains did two or three million miles in their life of about 30 years. Two or three hundred miles a day works out to about this figure. Last night (15-09-19) I rode from Oxford to Bicester Village in a Class 165/0 unit, the type that replaced the 115s in the early 1990s so is now about as old as the trains in this video were when the video was made. @@cedriclynch like most 1st gen units the 115s were built with an expected lifecycle of 15 years. They were indeed falling to pieces at the end. The engines though we're pretty tough all things considered. The 115s were worked especially hard on this route as there was usually a speedy met line unit not far behind.
