I used to watch Class 118 DMUs on the Western Region at Slough and Langley during the 1980's. They also were unofficially named 'bog units' on account of the pneumatic noises they made during gear changes.

This video is a classic. I love the class 104s in NSE livery, the hybrid sets of 104/108 and 108/101. I remember a time when these charismatic little trains were everywhere, you couldn't turn round without seeing them. Oh how I long for those days again.

Fantastic video Soi. Strange towards the end of NSE days Marylebone sets were just a hotch potch of whatever they can put together. I certainly dont remember 108s on that line. Lovely seeing the Thumpers at Salisbury,ha many a day mis-spent there lol. It's funny how no-one ever really rated DMU's back in the day. And how we all miss them now!
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus4 жыл бұрын
I seem to recall the Marylebone sets quite mixed up all time when i was out filming. I always had a soft spot for real DMUs & DEMUs....a decent ride rather than the horrible seats on today's new stock....

I love those old DMMUs. Trains cobbled together from various classes. Unlike today where so many types can only couple within their class, or adding an extra carriage to a unit would involve a days work and reprogramming the train's computer. Todays trains are nuts. Inflexible, over complicated and ridiculously expensive to manufacture.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus4 жыл бұрын
It is crazy today....even different sub classes of the same train cannot couple together because of the build spec being different from the requirements of different TOCs....It took BR years to replace all the pre nationalisation stock with a standard country wide norm....only to have it smashed to pieces again.......The first gen DMUs did have different sub classes (like the Bedpan 127s that were fully auto & could only couple within class) but a lot were Blue Square and could be couple up to 12 carriages with up to six powered out of the 12. I always liked the forst gen units and filmed them where-ever i could....lots more still to upload.

Yes, i remember doing an NSE Rover in May 92 to chase the last of the loco hauled workings out of Paddington as the Turbo's were due. The Chiltern ones arrived in mid 91 although were only on test, i have one on film at West Ruislip but it wasn't in service, the first gen DMU's still ruled.....
