Wonderful. 0:29 just heading to Reigate and onto my hometown of Dorking. I lived beside that line so it’s such a familiar sound!! They replaced the lovely old class 3R Tadpole units about 9-10 years prior to this. Redhill was a major sorting office for this whole area so there was a good amount of 33s pulling mail. I wondered if it was going to change ends to head off down the reading-to bridge line. And it did!! The other good thing was if you got stuck late in London you could go to Victoria and talk sweetly to a driver and jump the Mail train to redhill and it at least got you back bearish to home (for Dorking) the DMU at 10:50 is quite unusual for that route.

That's because the 47 had failed! The 73 had the power to pull it all but only on juice, on diesel they had no chance!

A failure of the 47. Luckily it was on a juice line as the ED's would have no chance of moving it under their diesel power, they're struggling on electric!

The 47 must have had problems as the 2 ED's were rescue engines. The ED's were working in multiple but can't with the 47 which still had it's driver on board. It may have had a flash-over or maybe high water temperature......

Great video, thanks for uploading. I'm only a short distance away from there. Redhill (RH) is the main postal code in the area and always used to be busy with parcels etc. The double headed 73s on the Yeoman train was particularly nice. The 73s were only 1400/1500hp whereas I think the 47 was around 2500. I think 58s took over this run but it was ages ago so I might be wrong ! "Liked and subscribed"

Thank you. The 47 had some sort of problem and had been rescued by the ED's. It is still running and as the ED's struggle away from the signal stop the 47 revs a little as it applies a little power. They were 2750hp so had a fair bit of poke but that Yeoman train weighed in at around 1700/1800 tons! The wagons weighed 95 tons approx + weight of the loco but bear in mind it was probably only half a train, it would have been twice as long coming up from Westbury before splitting at Acton or a similar WR yard.

I'll slip in a little extra upload of the last HST's leaving Padd. I first saw one of these futuristic machines in early summer 1976 and had my first ride on one when they entered squadron service in the October of that year. My Dad and & I took up a cheap ticket offer to go to Bristol for a fiver so got my first Valenta thrash then and have loved them ever since!

Operationally, they were the best days of British Rail, NSE ended up in profit as did InterCity, Parcels and Trainload Freight. Rfd never made it pay and Regional Railways alsways needed payments for the social railway they provided but they had new trains (not always the best think Pacer) but at least the lines stayed open, ridership was going up and support payments down-brilliant railway. But this picture doesn't fit the politicians & mainstream media's view of 'bad old BR' !!! Give me back the railway run by railway professionals....

Only passed through Redhill last week, changed trains there to get to Tonbridge, from Brighton.. New Plat 0, no sign of Old RM bay plat anymore. All sidings & Stsbling Points gone :(

47 378 is still working, but I think she must have slipped to a stand on wet rails, and 73 114 + 73 116 were sent to provide assistance. I note the DMU that came in the platform and reversed, was running forward whilst displaying red lamps, contrary to the Rule Book !

I think 378 had failed and the ED's were the rescue engines. Good job they were 'on juice' as they would never have moved the train on diesel power alone! I imagine the DMU driver simply forgot to cahnge his lights over, easily done!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus You can hear the Class 47 ticking over on your video as she passes. Perhaps she was low on coolant and unable to apply power ? I had a Class 73 from Waterloo to Reading once. That route has loads of level crossings. As the roads were wider, than the length of the Class 73, she was gapped. Drawing a thousand amps or more, she electrocuted the shrubbery, both leaving the juice rail and regaining it moments later. To climb up onto the GWR platforms at Reading, she had to switch to diesel power, as the connection off the Southern is not electrified. She struggled up the grade with her puny 500hp on Load 9. The Class 73/9s are more meaty on diesel power. I had one from Fort William to Edinburgh. The only time I caught a driver running forward on red lights, was at Haymarket with a Class 47/7. I saw the red glow through the tunnels, as she approached. I ran to the loco, to tell the driver. He thanked me, and if I had been older (and more cheeky) I might have asked for a cabride. He seemed appreciative enough, that I had got him out of a hole. He said it would not have reflected well on him, or the intervening signalboxes, if he had arrived at Glasgow Queen Street still displaying reds.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus You can hear the engine in the 47 running, in fact, as the Yeoman train moves off, we even hear the engine open up a bit, and the radiator vents open. So, as you said above, possibly high water temperature. Could have been an AWS fault as well, speedo fault.

Good video. I remember some Class 101 DMU s working on the Reading to Redhill line at this time. Made a change from the 116 and 117s. Also fond memories of the parcels trains on this route, usually Class 33 hauled but sometimes it would be a 47. Been to Redhill recently, shame to see the yard lifted.

I see places now that i filmed at in the past and it's freightening how drastic the changes are. Back in the late 80s i filmed three 08's shunting (all at the same time) in Scunthorpe yard yet the place closed years ago, the gronks just a distant memory......

Because 47s were signed by a lot of depots, they were grabbed by different depots and used on local jobs until the home depot requested on TOPS its return. Some of Stratford's engines would be at the other end of the country working, so SF would naturally grab any that appeared on their patch for local jobs!

101s and 119s got as far into Southern territory as Tonbridge but rarely any further ie Paddock Wood which was a cold sparse hellhole in winter.

I don't suppose Paddock Wood has much going for it in summer either!!! I never got DMU's at Tonbridge, by the time i had a video camera the Redhill-Tonbridge route was DEMU 'Thumper' units (which i doi have on vid!)

It could well have been high water temperature, you leave the engine running as it circulated the water to try & reduce the temperature. Even the poor old ED's were working hard on the juice, those Yeoman trains are very heavy!
