British Rail Variety 1996--Crewe with Classes 37, 47, 58, 86, 87, 90 & 309

Back to August 1996 and to some evening loco variety at Crewe. Loco hauled train action is provided by Inter-City and Regional Railways with classes 37, 86 & 87, Parcels with class 47 & 86 and freight action with a Transrail Enterprise working hauled by a class 58, which wasn't acommon loco type vto pass by Crewe. A pair of class 90s run light engine to Crewe Electric Depot and an ex Network SouthEast class 309 'Clacton' EMU heads a local workking off to Manchester. Another great clip, Soi. The enterprise train looked like the 6S75 Sheerness to Mossend, those Coil wagons starting at Sheerness with the white Starch wagons behind them originating at Sittingbourne. This was a train i saw many times at Wandsworth Road and also at Stafford

Thats right but it was still 6S44 in 1996. Didnt change to 6S75 til mid 1997.

I first visited Crewe in the early 70s at the time the electrification only went as far as Weaver junction so all trains heading north past there had to change to diesel power.All trains to/from Scotland had double headed class 50s.It was heaven on earth for a schoolboy railway enthusiast.

Hellfire the 6S44 Sheerness to Mossend passing through. I saw this many times with 31s or 37s on, mostly 56s but never a 58 although 58s did work it often between Wembley and Bescot. Some great scenes...like the parcels working still with blue vans on it. Cant have been many left by 96.

Yes, i thought it was rare to see a 58 on it that far north....a problem with traction knowledge if nothing else!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Yes I think it was a bescot job between Bescot and Warrington and return on the corresponding 6M27 and the loco usually came back with it.

Class 37/4 naming got very confusing didn't it. 37427 is Highland Region there, it used to be Bont y Bermo. And as for names: Clothes Show Live?? The buddleia was beginning to encroach, wasn't it.

naming policy was always a bit crazy on BR after loco pools were introduced and they were swapped around as locos were transfered around.....

Do you mean those with a blue stripe? there were quite a few ex Network SouthEast coaches in use where they painted the red strip blue but left the other NSE colours alone......
