Shot on video, this clip has been digitally aged and given a film like look to simulate what original footage would look like if it had been shot in the 1960's. The original unprocessed colour footage of the clips shown here is included on the PANARAIL DVD Diesels on the East Lancahsire Railway 1992-1994

I'd prefer the unprocessed footage. Astonishing that these engines have survived. I believe that they experienced issues with their transmissions in BR service.

Sound quality is very clean which should have given the game away but the black and white footage still fooled me right up until I saw a packed car park which was full of what looked like mid to late eighties cars (possibly 90s). Mind you I'll watch anything with WR diesel hydraulics in it. Thanks for uploading. Interesting twist!

What wonderful footage. I didn't think film of this quality existed. Thank you so much for the upload.

Great work! You made a B/W aficionado think he is watching a vintage super-8 footage. But the returning white vertical streaks gave the modern video away. Overall this retro-processing

An often overlooked part of our railway history, the relatively short period between steam and the Inter City 125s when the Western Region was unique in using diesel hydraulic locomotives.

The Warships (and Westerns) had fixed ventilation grilles, but the engine room windows on both classes could be opened for ventilation in warm weather. Today D832 and D821 have fixed engine-room windows but in their BR days they could be opened half-way. The Class 52s have variable-speed fans (visible only from above) that run faster when the engines are hot.

When Iwas 9 years old, I rode in the cab of Onslaught from Paddington to Westbury with my Uncle Reg who was the driver. We actually went on to Castle Cary because of a crew mix up at Westbury. We returned in the cab of a Hymek. Not sure of the number ??? It was 1969 !!!!!

Could someone help me please? Which shutters on the Warship opened and closed, so the engine could cool? I've been looking around for ages and have found not a lot relating to this! Thanks

Wow cant believe how much ELR looks in this video. There is no road into platform 4. Shame the warship is away from the ELR and Prince and Teddy Bear are out of action. Maybe one day in the future!

This is a very nice video - but the background noise is very annoying - it sounds like a generator running all the time. 5** for the vid.
