I moved to America earlier this year and it still throws me when people ask me to repeat things because they have no idea what I mean. Someone at Dunkin asked if I wanted sprinkles on my doughnut and I replied, "OH go on then!" and she just stared at me and asked nervously, "Yes or no?". Apparently its not a common used phrase. At work I asked someone if I had 'dropped them in it' and it was awkward having to explain everything from the beginning.
@mr.quacadile6834 жыл бұрын
Haha the "go on then!" I would have gotten but definitely not the "dropped them in it". Go on then just sounds similar to "go ahead" to me. Maybe it was the way you said it?

Misuse of though, do hope that's not becoming a thing. "Though" expresses contrast or the unexpected . "This cheese smells like old socks, it tastes great though"
@sethhatton76144 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's unexpected that the cheese would taste good since it smells bad, thus explaining the use of though.

Perhaps you would comment on the term ' High Street' which seems to indicate the main commercial thoroughfare in English towns. Here in America "Main Street" is usually used but it is actually called that in many towns.

Hi Elliot, I have a question concerning the "British sarcasm". The other day I overheard my British colleague saying something to the other colleague. At the end, I heard him saying something like "I am just being sarcastic" jokingly . I am sure he was NOT being mean.This reminded me of how commonly sarcasm is used in British English (from my British roommate experience). It would be nice if you can do a video on that because this is the sort of thing that couldn't be learnt from textbooks. I don't want to get all serious when people are just being friendly. Thank you! And btw, I really enjoy your channel:)
@ETJEnglish8 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point. Sarcasm is definitely something which can not be taught through textbooks and I would be happy to teach a topic like this on my channel in the future! It's so common in British English and every learner deserves some form of understanding so they don't feel uncomfortable. Thank you for the suggestion!

Australian and English natives talk banter but In America and New Zealand it is not as common. It comes off more as a mean thing to other English speakers. English language culture is somewhat petty and had a delicate subtlety in terms of sarcasm, wit and banter unlike American humour which is usually in your face and quite obvious so that you know what is going on if you just learnt English last month.

So basically, banter is a friendly or affectionate teasing?
@calbeaney87115 жыл бұрын
Yes, but often using very rude jokes or teases. The kind of banter many of my mates have is downright offensive, and nobody else would get away with saying what we say to each other.
@tcraigh15 жыл бұрын
Banter is fine between friends who know to expect it amongst themselves. Banter with strangers or those who have not given permission is wrong and basically bullying and those who do it are out of order.
@bitemebudha85714 жыл бұрын
Not exactly! 😂😂😂
@peacehope73652 жыл бұрын
@@tcraigh1 I agree. I'm British, but to be honest don't engage in banter with anyone other than those I know extremely well, whose boundaries I know. I've been 'a victim' of banter taken far too far, and I really got upset. Until you know someone's boundaries... I'm female though. Men seem to take it much further, and don't seem to mind so much...

Then it may be a good idea to tell the person you're talking to about it (if you feel comfortable sharing), and mention that you don't fully understand or feel comfortable with "banter". I would hope then that the person would have enough respect to adapt to your personal style and respect your boundaries

It's funny because in America geezer means old person, usually male, who isn't very cool. When we say you're just a geezer or old geezer it means that you're time has passed and you're out of touch.
