Hi tech indeed! state of the art 35 years ago. Amazing isnt it. I used to fax my timesheets to work, saved me posting them lol. Those were the days. didnt fax machines stop working after we went digital? We didnt really use the telephone anymore once cable/adsl became available around 2000. Faxes became merged with internet modems till people moved to broadband. Then modems stopped being used, by 2006 dialup was pretty much going down the pan. People still used dialup for many years till bt finally got off their asses. Back to 2022, some networks are still copper based even with fibre. We havent really progressed as far as I thought we would in 30 odd years. In a way technically speaking we seem to have stalled in terms of advancement. Everything is smaller, faster etc, but we havent really moved up any further on the tech tree.

The DWP and NHS still use fax machines. I think perhaps it's more secure than digital equivalents...? But I also wouldn't be surprised if its more to do with budgets than security/efficiency. I know a couple of people who work for the NHS and they're still using software that was out of date 10 years ago! It's shocking, really. With the DWP, especially health/disability benefits stuff, I wouldn't be surprised to find out it's more about the difficulty for most of us to access a fax machine these days. They don't have any more modern alternatives, it's just post or fax, and often it's for paperwork needed for an assessment deadline, meaning that if you can't afford to courier it or access a fax, then you risk your payments being stopped. I used to do support work before becoming disabled myself and have experience with it from both sides.

@@helenl3193 I work for the NHS and my Trust still uses fax machines for both security and cost reasons. They say there's nothing wrong with fax as it does the job, it's not reliant on an Internet connection and is more securer and unlikely to be hacked like an email can. The only issue I have re. security is that the correct recipient needs to be standing at the fax machine, ready to receive it, as it's confidential information. On the other hand, it's also a waste of paper, ergo money, and what if you get a digit wrong in the number you're faxing? Major security breach and therefore a Datix against your name. Swings and roundabouts really.
