Yeah, when your boots become saturated with moisture they suddenly become much more abrasive too. I always had spare socks close to my body to dry them out even if they did not feel wet yet and kept changing them with the ones i was wearing. Simply to keep the moisture down in otherwise steaming boots while moving through the forest all day.

In my country we don't have a dictator as ruler. Right. There was no EU in 1815, when European defeated Napoleon, in 1853 when we fought Russia in defence of the Ottomans, 1904, when we supported Japan against the Russian empire again,1914 when The UK went to the aid of Belgium. Nor was there in 1939 when we had to face down the aggressor again. Nor was there an EU when I was based in Germany in the 1980s, as part of NATO. Much as I think leaving the EU was a massive blunder, it will not affect our mutual defence treaties, nor our willingness to defend smaller neighbours.

Modern British and NATO armour would decimate anything Putin could rustle up to try a second front invasion here. He's already spread and wasted much of his military in Syria and Ukraine. If it was not for the nuclear counter, a massive SEAD mission over Russian soil would soon neutralise their offensive and defensive air capabilities pretty quickly and effectively and the bears claws would be permanently removed for good.

I think 148 will come from the reality that the tanks are long out of production and aging so some will need to be cannibalised to keep the rest going. Ultimately Challenger 3 is a stop gap upgrade. That said we're seeing in Ukraine it's longer range systems that are more needed.

1:00 - Haha! So what narrator said about how it forced them to "reconsider future of heavy weapons"; I did not expect what colonel said afterwards about how the lesson was that it still has a role 🤣. That was not the "highlight" of the Ukraine war up until this point. I guess they have to say that because they have to keep up those tank sales (not even talking about the fact that the Challanger 2 had documents leaked). Although I'd agree that it's the best way to attack still, ie mobility and protection from small arms fire etc, but using Ukraine as an example isn't the best example.

Where do you live? Do you live in a free democracy, or an autocratic state with heavily curtailed freedoms and a dwindling economy that invades countries at will? Which one is defended by NATO, and which one occupied all of its neighbours and oppressed any attempts at forming democracies? Which one allows even the most stupid anti establishmentary comments on KZbin, and which one would put you in jail for up to 15 years for them?

Maybe everything happening in the east of Europe will finally make the government see the need for a somewhat larger force. I mean we’ve sent 3 out of only 40 odd surface to surface missile launchers to be used by Ukraine, and really I don’t think we can afford to send more than that and I hope we don’t since it’d be a problem otherwise. if it were me (and I’m by no means a financial expert or military soldier at all, tho I do wish I could at some point) I’d want the British army to be at around 120,000 active personal strong with at least 75-80,000 reservists ideally. aside from that, the number of tanks is kinda small, last I checked it was around 200 odd and declining to be around 142 challenger “3” tanks. tbh the government needs to see that it can’t keep having its military capabilities decline, the less soldiers and vehicles we have, the less we’ll be willing to allocate to any war effort not on British soil.

30 tanks are a considerable slice of the dwindling British capability. If we do not start planning for a new MBT manufacturing facility soon. The days of the indigenous tank are over. The shame of the British Army driving around in German designed and built tanks, will have our fore fathers turning in their graves. Not quite as bad if we buy American but it's still a national disgrace. We could do much worse than starting from the existing Challenger concept. Perhaps designed around a fully integrated engine and gearbox power pack, that can be changed in 30 mins under field conditions. Giving a power output permitting several more tons to be added to the basic Dorchester hull when deployed or needed. With F35 type helmets and HUDs for the 3/4 crew. Permitting full 360' coverage with hatches closed. Rather than the days of the MBT being over, I would argue that with the new battled awareness IT available today. Combined with ever improving active protection systems. The Tank has finally come of age as a fully aware and totally integrated linchpin of armed conflict. Manned or unmanned turret, autoloader or not, 120/130/150mm gun is open to discussion.
