Completely agree with this. It's a beautifully haunting film and Klaus Kinski is exceptional.

I have always been puzzled as to why Herzog used the name 'Lucy' for Harker's beloved,rather than 'Mina.' Perhaps it has something to do with the name's association with light...
@jamescollinge5043 Жыл бұрын
It adds to the menace of the film for me. Most of the audience have probably seen / read a version of Dracula to know that Lucy dies and Mina lives, therefore naming the heroine Lucy makes her feel vulnerable.

It's so hard to pick a favourite Dracula movie. The 1930s version is excellent, really creepy, Van Hestling is great in it, the set design is really good. The 1958 version is good, Christopher Lee brought a lot of energy and menace to the role, the 30s version is more dialogue and atmosphere, the 50s is more gore and shocks. The 1978 version is very slow, and haunting and beautiful. The 1979 version is very stylish and sinister but Dracula is also so charismatic and charming too. The 1992 version is the most faithful to the novel, but also has KV in it miscast. The 1992 is the most overtly sexual and the monster effects and music are great.

I watched this on bfi player last night and, well, I didn't think it was very good at all! the acting was poor for the most part and lots of 'scenes' didn't flow well together, particularly in the final third of the film. there were some interesting shots (such as when we first see the count) and the ending certainly added to the original. but on the whole I was disappointed and still much prefer the original 1922 film.

@ricardocantoral76724 жыл бұрын
@@zaroffhound So it grates you. Your loss. That doesn't mean it was ineffective or "empty". Herzog's film is about nature's unending cycle of creation and destruction and how much of it is beyond our comprehension. Instead of being a villain, Dracula is a victim just like those who succumbed to the plague.
@zaroffhound4 жыл бұрын
@@ricardocantoral7672 I'm fully cognisant about what it's 'about'. My subjective personal opinion is that his style holds no engaging elements, in it's drear, drab, death-laden attitude to pace etc. No doubt those very weighty aspects are what some find appealing, having the taint of death transfiguring even the film itself as it unravels. Stills from the film are superb. However, again subjectively, the Herzog approach is of realism/naturalism and I find the acting, mis en scene & the end product redundant. So loss, I feel none but time.
@ricardocantoral76724 жыл бұрын
@@zaroffhound Even though much death occurs in this film, Herzog really didn't want you to dwell on it. The deaths are tragic to us human beings but there is something awe inspiring about the whole thing. For Herzog, watching nature at work is fascinating even it's out to destroy you. You feel insignificant for all the right reasons. Is the film absolutely perfect ? No. Kinski's dialogue was mostly unnecessary. His performance telegraphed the trag side of his character. He didn't need to explain his suffering in such detail. Outside of that one blemish, the film is still superb and highly engaging in my book.
@brandonkeisler864 жыл бұрын
This is about as pretentious as you can get. You notice how he talks more about the original than the remake. Not a good sign And definitely not a good movie.
@ricardocantoral76724 жыл бұрын
Kinski does have a tad too much dialogue but that doesn't mean the film is bad. Not by a long shot. As far as I am concerned, the Murnau and Herzog films are the only Dracula adaptations that are real masterpieces.
