Herzog knew Kinski since he was a teenager and Kinski a lodger in his mother's boarding house. He refused to be intimidated by him and developed methods of getting around him, and even pulled a gun on him once to keep him from walking off the set (it worked). He explained his method in an interview where he described his technique of first triggering Kinski deliberately, then letting him rant and rage until he was completely exhausted. Then he would shoot the scene.

I think Kinski's portrayal of Aguirre is so iconic in part because he probably shared some psychological features with the man. Real life Lope de Aguirre (1511) was a Spanish (Basque) conquistador that was renowned for being a egomaniacal, homicidal, cruel and downright crazy man. His legacy of exceptional cruelty and violence left deep marks in South America, even today, specially in Venezuela. The part of the movie concerns most with his exploits in Peru in search of the mythical city of El Dorado, where he betrayed and murdered other expedition leaders to try and seek glory for himself. He ended up cruising all the way up the Orinoco river eventually reaching Margarita Island and slaying its governor. On his way west he left a trail of bodies, flames and revolts - was eventually halted near Barquisimeto (mainland Venezuela) where shortly before capture, he executed his own daughter claiming that he felt repulsed by the thought of her bedded by a local (differently of what is shown in the movie). Killed by one of his own men in 1561. Curiously, those words are documented as actually having been said by Aguirre: "I am the wrath of God"

@dewok2706 Yeah it sounds like Kinski may have raped his own daughters, while Aguirre killed his. Not nice chaps, by the sounds of it. But they did achieve things I suppose, I mean at least Kinski gave some good performances and Aguirre was...well at least he was ballsy, right? A courageous villain is still at least slightly less despicable than a cowardly one. As someone said before, "Great men are rarely good men."

@aequivalent9761
@aequivalent9761 11 ай бұрын

"filthy" "perverse" "genuine actor" "genius" "sociopath" Why not all of them? Those words don't excuse what he's done, but they do describe the man rather nicely.

Paul Gauguin abandoned his family to go paint, and diddle, adolescent girls in Tahiti. Great paintings, genius artist, terrible terrible human being. Many great artists were psychopaths, because great art is not something normal people do with such life-destroying intensity. What do we do? Burn down the Louvre? How would that make anything better?

The strange thing is he actually had no stage diction and spoke or yelled with a ridiculous Berlin accent. He had no higher education whatsoever and it shows in every single line he spoke. That would not necessarily be a bad thing, even in theatre, had he not been so absurdly pretentious. For Zuckmayer or Sternheim he would have otherwise been ideal.
