Acclaimed author and historian Professor Olivette Otele discusses her new book 'African Europeans: An Untold History' alongside playwright, author and former Deputy Chair of the British Museum, Bonnie Greer OBE. Their conversation, introduced by British Museum Director Hartwig Fischer, explored the forgotten history of African European heritage, from Emperor Septimius Severus, to enslaved Africans living in Europe during the Renaissance, all the way to present-day migrants moving to Europe’s cities.

What a load of rubbish, the fall of Constantinople is not the event defining European borders, the Turks continued their advancement into the Balkans and the city after city, country after country fell. Europeans have other events that were more identity-defining because Europeans won and turned the tide, especially if we are talking about Muslims, like the battle of Vienna where the Austrians and the Poles pushed back the invading Turks, the bloody resistance of Vlad the Impaler, the Norman liberation of Sicily from the Muslims or the battle of Tours where the Franks pushed back the imperialistic advance of the the Caliphate. Furthermore Europe is not a peninsula of Asia but maybe a peninsula of the supercontinent of Eurasia... Then we have other identity-defining victories against the Mongols or the Christianization of the Pagans and later how the battle was won against the ideological threats from within as the West fought off the Nazis and then defeated the Communists in an military and economic arms race. Trying to distort history and make European history about Africans or Muslims stinks of historical relativism, next thing and we will get the same treatment as the Egyptians as some factions in American society try to steal and lay claim to their history. Although I have to give credit for mentioning that the Africans was the ones selling the slaves to the Europeans and yes the Africans and Europeans mixed in the African continent mostly separated from the American slave trade.
