@@ruwiki I agree that the name changes shouldn't be on the list, but not all of the elements are wrong. Yugoslavia - a federation of states which all separated and went their own way, including Serbia. Serbia was not just a rebranded Yugoslavia Soviet Union - same as above. in fact, ironically they existed, for a short period of time, only in Kazakhstan. Russia declared independence prior to the formal dissolution of the Union, so for a time both Russia and the Soviet Union existed at the same time Tibet - was annexed by another country, so it no longer exists as a nation United Arab Republic - split up into two states which held none of the governmental structures of the past regime, therefore it no longer exists East Germany - voluntarily joined West Germany, thereby stopping to exist as a nation. Did you write this just to act smart? Because if you did you failed miserably.

Now that all of Germany is united (East, South, North, and West). There's no use to describe the "Federal Republic of Germany" by the informal name of "West Germany".

Democratic Kampuchea. Though it occupied the same area as modern day Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge regime that ruled between 1975 and 1979 made it a historical oddity for Southeast Asia: A comprehensively totalitarian and genocidal state that sought to reverse sociocultural evolution and revert the nation to an agrarian ideal by targeting not only undesirable social classes but the population as a whole. This was to be achieved through mass campaigns of killings and forced labour, effectively turning the country into a network of gulags.

The country named 'Ceylon' ( by the three colonial powers i.e. Portuguese, Dutch and the British), has not ceased to exist or lost its sovereignty. It has only changed its name to 'Sri Lanka' ( like 'Siam' to 'Thailand') which means in the Sinhala language ' Respendent Isle', on May 22, 1972, when the country declared itself a Republic and shed its dominion status in the British Commonwealth. The original name of ' Ceylon' prior to the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505 was ' Sinhale' that had lasted for more than two thousand years. The early travellers to Ceylon such as the Chinese Buddhist monk Fa Hien ( 410 A.D.) in his 'Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms: Being an Account of His Travels in India and Ceylon' refer to Ceylon / Sri Lanka as the ' Sinhaladipa' ( Island of the Sinhala people). Fa-Hien's writings and those of another Chinese Buddhist monk Xuan Zang (also known as Heung Tsang )as well as other ancient Chinese records referred to Sri Lanka as the land of Sinhalas. The different Chinese names Shizi guo, Sit Tio, Si Tiao, She Tiao, Seng-Kia-lo denoted the same meaning - Simhala, Sinhaladipa or Kingdom of the Lions. see www.sundaytimes.lk/031123/plus/3.htm archives.dailynews.lk/2010/05/22/fea04.asp Senaka Weeraratna Colombo, Sri Lanka

@rexultimatum25889 жыл бұрын
sakurakou2009 It was, but it no longer exists today. It was kind of similar to Germany during ww1(it was an Empire), and thus was the name of the country, also.
@sakurakou20099 жыл бұрын
January January I know it's existed but it wasn't country , it was caliphate mean it was like many small countries under 1 flag but as one country it didn't exist like that , for example Egypt and sudan was called egypt and sudan just like they were called now and they were under ottoman caliphate rule , even turkey was called turkey at that time , saudi and the other gulf countries were called Hijaz , while Syria Lebanon Palestine jorden etc were called sham , all the Ottaman caliphate regions had their own kedawi or sultan mean something like small king and all of them follow the caliphate ... So I wouldn't call Ottoman caliphate as country cuz they weren't .
@TheIraqiforce9 жыл бұрын
Well in that case the Abbasid Caliphate, Ummayed Caliphate, Ummayyad caliphate, the seljuqs from Egypt and many other muslim caliphates just as much as ottoman caliphate, don't get me wrong it was they spread Islam and defended my country iraq and their territories but by far the best caliphate was the Abbasid( lots of reasons why but itssssssssss tooooooo looooong) hope you research though it's interesting what these caliphates achieved which wayy more than the Europeans can dream of.
@sakurakou20099 жыл бұрын
Taha Hasan I agree that abbasid was great caliphate , islam golden era was in abbasid , ottamans weren't bad as well , I hate fatimiya , the hakim bi amer llah was horrible . so in order abbasid > ottaman > omaya > fatimya

Although colonies may not be considered 'nations,' many had central governments and their own monetary systems; so, I listed some of those that I could remember along with actual nations of the past. I also list nations I didn't see in other comments. Biafra; Rhodesia; Germania and Troy in ancient times; Siam; Persia; Abyssinia; colonies such as Italian Libya (Tripolitania), Italian Somalia and East Africa; German East Africa, German Southwest Africa; French Indochino; Belgian Congo; Bohemia and Moravia; Ottoman Empire; Prussia and other German Free States (semi-autonomous Danzig; Pomerania; etc.); Danish West Indies; German Solomon Islands; Kiautschou Bay concession; Chefoo; Tianjin; Burma; British Malaya; Dutch East Indies; Tanganyika; Portuguese Angola, Macau, India, Guinea, Brazil, Mozambique, Timor, etc; Swedish Gold Coast, Guadeloupe, Saint Barthélemy, Tobago, New Sweden and others; etc., etc...too many more to add.

Well, technically these countries didn't cease to exist: Congo was renamed the Republic of Zaire in 1971 and returned in 1997 reverted its name to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Upper Volta was established in 1958 and renamed Burkina Faso in 1984.
@19Koty969 жыл бұрын
Well, technically, Czechoslovakia was also invaded shortly after the WWI, by Poland and Hungary. Althought less known facts, those were the only wars fought by sovereign Czechoslovakia on it's own territory. (Many people would say, that there were none, but there were o.O)

Eastern Rumelia - In 1877 after the April Uprising(1876) began the Russian-Turkish War which led to the liberation of Bulgaria. The country was divided by the Great Powers into The Kingdom of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia which remained vassal to the Ottoman Empire until 1885 when Bulgarian king Aleksandar Batenberg announced the unification which had to be deffended with a war against Serbia that Bulgaria won.

The bit about Ceylon (Sri Lanka) is wrong!! I'm Sri Lankan.. Yes, we gained independence from the British in 1948, and became a dominion.. We became Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972 under constitutional reforms of Mrs.Bandaranaike, world's first female prime minister.. In 1978 the constitution was changed yet again, by Mr.Junius Jayawardena, the new president.. Thereafter, the country is named The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.. We are still an active member of British Commonwealth..

@dochatteras9 жыл бұрын
Okay, I'm confused about what this video said about Siam. Does it no longer exist? Or did it just change it's name? I think there is a big difference between the two. Additionally, a change in boarders, or a change in governments (even types of governments) does not mean that a country no longer exists.
