People are very critical of him, and it's hard not to be for anyone who was ever friendly with Hitler for their own gain. However, it says something to me that he ended up joining the navy and actually fighting against Germany. That's not what a spineless opportunist does. Sure, but remember that back in the 1930s plenty of European countries (not the UK, sure) had authoritarian governments, it was nothing unusual by the standards of the era, and Nazi Germany hadn't committed genocidal crimes yet. (It was oppressive of course, but mostly within the unfortunate standards of that time). Even in democratic countries, the police shooting at street protests wasn't unusual, not to mention that eg. the US had racial segregation too.
