A couple of years ago one of my daughters bought my son a lock picking set for Christmas. Just as a lighthearted stocking filler. The problem was that we couldn't find the house keys to lock the front door so that he could try it. In the twenty plus years that we've lived there we have never locked the house. Admittedly, we live in a rural area. There definitely have been incidents of stuff being nicked from the beach, but they are rare. The social norm is that people can safely leave their things on the beach while they swim. It would make swimming a bit problematic if you couldn't. You still have to be sensible, however. It would be unwise to push your luck by leaving valuables where they're clearly visible.

" you just ROCK UP " . And you've only been here 5 months. Most towns / cities have free electric BBQs. Where I live (Inland east coast) the council even cleans them regularly. However here there are NO public rubbish bins . Everyone is expected to take their rubbish away with them. Unfortunately a lot of people find this requirement challenging.

We used to have a television licence when TV first came out. People got quite creative about hiding their aerial inside the roof space or only using an indoor aerial. It was abolished decades ago because the administration and policing of it ate up so much of the revenue it wasn’t worthwhile. Most of our snakes are elapids, they’re more likely to slither away from you than towards you unlike the vipers found elsewhere. A lot of our native birds and animals are crepuscular, active at dawn and dusk, and a lot are nocturnal. Perhaps it’s because it tends to be hot during the day.

More like late 50's. It cost more to harass and demand people to pay the licence fee than what they collected. The ABC was then paid for out of general taxpayer money. Today the ABC is a Marxist propaganda arm of the green/labor parties.

I asked the same question about why are the BBQs free? I was told that when they had coin boxes on the BBQs, the BBQs were always being vandalised, and it was cheaper to make them free than fix them. You also need to remember that Australia has a big problem with bushfires and lighting a BBQ in a total fire ban is not allowed.

Beach trick - zip lock sandwich bag for phone and keys - bury them deep under your towel or shoes with a swift twisting motion while you sit down at really crowded places that may have occasional theft problems - its good not to advertise your things , no need to be paranoid or anything - just cautious... the other good way to feel safe is be cheerful to the bathers on the sand around you , announce to thoes in earshot youll really appreciate if you can move your things over towards someone if they dont mind , while you go for a swim ... its a half way up to having things noted , not taken responsibility for by others but essentially marked off as owned by someone that has said hello 😉 ... Helping each other out in the lazy aussie way - it only costs you a smile

One of the main overall things I noticed was that many things were similar to the UK, and a few things were similar to the US. But there were mostly things that were uniquely Aussie. There were TV licenses -(and before that radio licenses) _ but it was decided that the enforcement costs were ridiculous when 95+% of households had a TV (this happened in the 1970s)
@lezivanerrol3697
@lezivanerrol3697 15 сағат бұрын
Yep, the enforcement costs were much more than the revenue return. Plus the Aussie TV and radio licenses were enforced back in the era when the UK had more influence on Aussie culture. My 1951 Aussie birth certificate tells me I'm a British subject. My brother in law's original Aussie 1950 passport describes him as a British subject. In 1952 he went and worked in the UK - no work visa required. He married a U K lady back in 1956 and bought her back to Australia - no visa required. Don't worry about snakes. Unless you are observant you wont see them - unless you inadvertently stand on one and get bitten.

Australia had radio and TV licences but they went away in 1974. I never bothered to get one when I left home on 1972. I lived in shared houses and never once did an inspector visit as I recall them doing when TV licences were introduced in the late 1950s. Radio licences went back to the 1920s. Portable transistor and car radios must have made it too difficult to police . What do you do with a couple 12 year olds on the train with a trannie radio? Or a car parked by the beach? Young people became very nomadic in the late 60s and 70s as many swapped home for shared houses that broke up and reformed endlessly. To properly police radio and TV licences would have cost as much as the revenue raised. By the time they were abolished I think only those with giveaway rooftop TV antennas bothered with them

You need to invest in some aeroguard spray for flies mosquitoes etc. Your partner should have a bigger hat and sunglasses on for not only the sun here and the high incidence of sun cancer I notice you both squint . While the sun may be a novelty for you now it won't be when you get a sun cancer and it can travel through your blood and die. Not trying to scare you just a fact. That sun dress needs to retire "slip , slop, slap, seek shade" : our kids have a policy at school no hat no play and we aren't talking a baseball hat. Sunscreen also needs to be applied even in winter on overcast days not just the face body and neck but also the ears.

You're living up in the tropics so the birds are noisy all year long. Come to the southern states and you'll find the noisy birds like white cockatoos travel back inland for the cold months. Peace at last. Air for tyres and free public bbqs are in NSW too. I'm pretty sure they'd be free Australia wide. Canberra has a public holiday called, yes, Canberra Day. That's bizarre and a bit unfair for the rest of us 😅 We don't pay tv licences because back in the 1970s, the progressive Labor government decided to fund the national broadcast station through taxation. Thank you Mr Witlam. The other free to air stations are privatised. I imagine most people stream their content now though. Thank you for your fun vlog 😊

Love it when you kept turning around just incase there was a snake. Now you would be very unlucky if one did slither along behind you, would have made great watching. We did have TV licenses a long time ago, it's just a government money grab, but can't believe the price they charge back in Britain, what a rip off.

Aussie freeview tv is abysmal. The problem being the networks have to have X amount of locally made content so they just fill it up with reality junk and game shows to keep it as cheap as possible. The rest of the it is just filled up with repeats of American sitcoms and adds or whatever they can find to fill up space. We have made some great tv shows like Mr in between, the slap, Rake , just a few of the top of my head. Even the news is full of space filling garbage mostly

How on earth do they catch you if you are watching TV without a TV license??
@teresamikedownunder
@teresamikedownunder 19 сағат бұрын
They know if you haven't paid your TV licence by maintaining a database of addresses, which indicates whether a licence is currently active at that location; if your address isn't listed as having a valid licence, they can then investigate further through visits from enforcement officers who can check your property for TV equipment and verify if you are watching live TV without a licence. 😱😱😱

For analog broadcast TV, they used to detect the IF signals radiating from the tuner. They had dystopian detector vans roaming the UK, looking for unlicensed viewers.

Another big difference between the UK and Australia is this. In the UK you have to have your car inspected each year for road worthiness or a MOT test. Not so in Australia, you only need a Road Worthy test if you sell your car privately, if you trade your car in at a dealer, the dealer does the road worthy test.

Hence all the heaps of junk on our roads causing accidents. I wish we did have an annual inspection for cars over, maybe, 3 years or so.
@Davo-i1s
@Davo-i1s 18 сағат бұрын
In NSW you have to get your car inspected for road worthiness every 12 months by someone authourised to carry them out once the vehicle is more than 5 years old. The mechanic submits the results of the inspection whether it passes or not so you cant keep shopping around until you find someone who will pass it without fixing the defects. You cant pay the registration fee until you have a passed inspection notice as well as a paid green slip that is also entered into the motor registries system by the insurance company when you pay your compulsory 3rd party insurance. If you fully own the car both 3rd party property and full comprehensive insurance comes optional but when paying it off normally under the terms of a loan agreement the goods have to be insured.

@@bencodykirk I disagree Ben, bad drivers cause accidents not cars. e.g. If the driver knows his brakes or tyres are defective then he should get them fixed and not drive.

When I first came to Australia in 1971 there was a TV licence in place. Paid it at the post office. Often wondered how they monitored it. We didn’t have a TV the first year living here. Imagine that. We also had no phone as it was very expensive. We bought a car before a TV. Life was was much quieter then 🫣😆

Until very recent times house plots were much bigger than in the UK so we could spread two-storey homes over one level. The term "bungalow" is known but not really used. "One level" or "single level" is more common.

G'day, As an Aussie I never knew you had TV licences until a few years back. All I could think is you broadcast this stuff for people to see they have to buy their own TV and you expect them to pay you? In the very beginning maybe but by a certain point I am sure it became some strange british thing, were you couldn't have the masses getting things for free, My god what would that lead to tax the blighters.
