I heard the U.S had a potential gold medal Table Tennis player at one time, but they decided to become a shrimping boat captain instead.

They have men's teams at Ivy League Universites (or they had back in the 70's), but as Ivy League types aren't known to be the best athletes, that shouldn't surprise anyone. The commonality in these sports is that they don't have very many players so the ability to make any money means the best athletes avoid them - not a lot of equipment sales which would lead to big money sponsorship deals. Other countries aren't as concerned about how much you can make so they will attract better athletes. Or they have huge state-sponsored programs like China.

I can’t believe I have never heard of the Pentathlon before, I’ve been watching the Olympics since the 90’s. I even try to watch the more obscure or least popular sports and still just now hearing about this sport/event. I’m just going to say it now, “This is the definition of what you call a rich person’s sport”.

The issue isnt that we cant win, its that we dont try to win because almost no American wants to compete in these. You can only do 1 sport a day and most of these are 1 day sports meaning if you do one one of these, youll likely be unable to compete with the more prestigious sports people actually watch. Outside of table-tennis theres just not many competitors on the US side. Last trampolining we had 3 registered vs Chinas 15....we just dont care enough about these sports.

The total cumulative of the most amount of medals won in the Olympics in history is the USA. The UK comes at 2nd, if you don't count the USSR. Although the UK has a much higher number of medals per capita than the USA, about 3 times more. China has only recently shone in the Olympics with their talent making factories.

Regarding handball and badminton I guess Denmark is the "oddball country" for those two sports (although handball was basically invented in Denmark in the 1800s). For decades Denmark has been able to compete well with the Asian countries in Badminton and have often had players be world #1 like "Viktor Axelsen" most recently (although now he's #2). Regarding handball goalies, you'd be amazed at how often they acrobatic saves. A good goalie saves about 35% and the world class ones can sometimes go nuts and save much more than that.
