although its changed a little in recent years, for the longest time, not every position developed the same skills. a lot of these people with weird shooting forms are centers who would probably get in trouble as kids if they ever attempted a shot outside the post, or power forwards who were only shooting 3's because something has gone horribly wrong in the play

Free throws are like putting, lots of pressure. Shooting a basketball involves the whole body. That's why you cann have many styles. I onced played a pickup game against a guy who spun the ball in the air and slapped-pushed it towards the goal.

I think the reason Lonzo's shot looked so odd is that he's right-handed but he aims with his left eye. His shot is fixed now though. Only hope is that the knees get fixed too

6:47 the reason Mason Plumlee's lefty shot looks so uncomfortable is cause he's naturally right handed and played his entire life and NBA career shooting right handed. He's just recently changed to shooting with his left hand.

For right handed: right hand wide and slightly cupped--snap ball through the pointer finger and index finger for directing and aiming. Left hand guides the push through. Make sure the shot is a nice arc/parabola (so that it can descend more easily through the rim). Just about all else is (except footwork, and timing of the jump and release and follow through, of course) is really not that important--people find what they are comfortable with and can get away with given their size, jumping ability and quickness with the ball. You will notice that in all of these they end in almost identical fashion with the snap through as described, above (I played all of my young life and learned and coached fundamentals).

Some players are just stubborn when it comes to switching their shooting forms we had a kid on our highschool team he was a really good athlete but had a weird shooting form and would get mad when our coach would tell him to fix it and would say who cares how it looks as long as it goes in

The reason many big men were so horrific at shooting is because the roles have changed a lot in the last decade in regards to player positions. Much how keepers in football are now being asked to build their footwork and ball skills and play on all edges and out of the box, centers are also only recently being asked to do the same. All the way from the beginning of the game until the 2010’s, centers stayed the whole game in the post near the basket and almost never shot the ball further than the midrange. Often; big men were criticized for shooting and were told to focus on post play moves. Nowadays, with the average height in the nba getting taller and the positions becoming more similar, all the tall players are working on ball skills and shooting at a very young age as a necessary skill. There are few big men in the league nowadays who truly have no jump shooting ability.

Daz, respectfully, we shoot a basketball (and a puck) and throw a baseball. Otherwise, well done. I could teach either or both of you to shoot properly--it would be different during game conditions, but fine for a game of H-O-R-S-E.

Up until about 10 or so seasons ago, you didn't need a team where every player could shoot. Role players roles were much more defined. Now in the NBA a role player basically means a spot up shooter in the corner you pass to out of a pick and roll, or when moving the defense around. Back then you would have players who were just great at defense. Whether it be rebounds, steals, on ball defense, blocks, etc. Rodman would be a great example of it that, but far from the last. Hell, even Shaq didn't have a good jump shot, and was terrible at free throws. lol The last championship the Pistons won they had Ben Wallace who also couldn't shoot, but had great inside defense and rebounds. And there are many more examples. But yeah, in the modern NBA it would be difficult to be a player who plays major minutes but couldn't shoot. The roles are far less defined in modern basketball. And with how the floor is stretched now, having a player who can't shoot really hurts an offense way more than it did even 10 or so years ago, but definitely in the 90's, early 2000s, when the roles were way more defined and important.

6:29 You've most likely never noticed it because Lonzo switched his jumper years ago and now it's pretty textbook and "pretty". he was one of the best shooters in the country in highschool and college but NBA defenses adapted + I suspect it was harder to shoot with the form from the NBA 3pt line consistently so his shot didn't translate. he naturally has a shooter's touch so he was able to adapt and change it to become one of the best shooters in the league.

Basketball is the same as football with players in specific positions that offer specific skills. Some of these guys are not shooters, their purpose is to play defense or finish at the rim. Its like in football putting a CB as a 9 and criticizing him for missing howlers. His job is to defend, not shoot the ball. The same can be said about the players shown in the video. In basketball same positioned players can also have a variety of playstyles. Look at Darwin and Haaland, they play the same role, but there is a huge difference in how they play, how they finish and their role on the pitch.
