Thanks for doing this one. This is an absolute masterpiece from PTX. The drone of the bagpipes from Kirstie and Kevin at the beginning. Matt starting so warm and deep. Scott with his soul sounds and riffing. Mitch using his lower register, so strong and smooth as caramel, with those beautiful runs and vibratos and singing with such meaning and conviction. Kirstie so sharp and belting to the skies. Kevin coming in so sweetly at the end after driving the rhythm with the vocal percussion. The vocal layering, the crescendo and the PTX wall of sound. Delivering a perfect performance and a clear message. Videography and setting so beautiful. More PTX please.

Congratulations, BP2!!! You identified that droning chord in the first verse as their interpretation of bagpipes. The only other reactor I have seen do that had a Scottish heritage, so I guess the whole of the British Isles is more in tune to that instrument than we are over here, even though this song is classically played as an instrumental on the bagpipes at countless ceremonies, especially funerals. The original lyrics (without the "My Chains Are Gone" chorus) were written by an ex-slaver, an Englishman by the name of John Newton, in the 1700's. Newton had a religious conversion, renounced the practice of slavery and became a cleric. He wrote this hymn to celebrate his salvation, and it has since been adopted by the American Christian community, and especially by African Americans. The instrumental version on bagpipes is hauntingly beautiful. Great reactions, as always! Following you closely through May!

The only complaint I have is that Matt "THE BASS" started the song off and wasn't mentioned, only bc in songs like the prayer he doesn't get mentioned either but without him the song would be lacking a foundation . Brit 1 I knew exactly what you were looking for in the beginning. Who was doing the bagpipes? Too bad we can't tell you while you are watching lol. I'm only through Mitchs solo though so maybe you will mention him when he comes back in again. I do sooo appreciate you all doing ptx as your artist of the month. Happy Birthday BP1!!

1 point to consider is how Kirstens voice skills have developed since the early days, her sustained vibrato and power (the difference between Hallelujah and this one). Point 2, her pregnancy, which was announced a few months ago and how that will change the group. I suspect it might be a year of single projects for the guys until Kirsten comes back to the group or maybe they'll become a 4 pt group (quadraphonix ie QX)?

Pretty sure I read somewhere that they have a bunch of new material to release but as they've just changed management they're shopping for a new record label. Scott said recently that they have a 10 year plan going forward and part of that is to break into more mainstream stuff and get radio play. I know Kirstie is performing with them in September, but I'm guessing she'll only be on 'light' duties until the end of the year/early 2023.

In the U.S. we are equally likely to be familiar with bagpipes playing Amazing Grace at funerals (particularly for police officers) & in parades as we are with singing it to standard piano/organ in a church. That's why they mixed in the bagpipe sound in the beginning. 🙂

Great reaction! Such a beautiful song performed by a very talented group. The drone sound at the beginning was Kirstin and Kevin. You mentioned listening to the actual lyrics and hopefully you noticed how they all, but especially Mitch, enunciate their words so clearly. You really need to watch THE RECORDING OF EVERGREEN to get a feel for how they work together so seamlessly to record not only songs but an entire album.

Interesting that you think of different countries since the author was British. He was, in fact, a preacher who was a former slave transporter. The inspiration for this song came from his days as a slave transporter. His ship, which was full of slaves, was caught in a storm. Unlike other slaveship captains, the author refused to dump the slaves into the ocean to save his ship. He felt sure he was going to die and found himself praying. Later, the author became a minister in the Church of England and was instrumental in the process of having slavery outlawed in England. Listening to this song, knowing its history, makes it even more powerful to me.

The "Amazing Grace" part of the song was written by an Englishman, John Newton, in the 18th century, but has always been far more popular in America, and I believe the tune it's most associated with was set for an American songbook. (hymnbooks in Newton's time did not include tunes and it's not known what tune if any he was thinking of). The "My Chains Are Gone" refrain was written by an American, Chris Tomlin, for use in a film score for a movie about the campaign to abolish slavery in Great Britain. The Pentatonix arrangement is at least partly based on Tomlin's version for voice and piano. It might have been Kevin who suggested the song to PTX, as he is the most religious member and I'm sure would have heard the Tomlin version in church activities, which also explains why he was featured.

Ah. The classic PTX 'Wall of Sound' towards the end there. They usually save it for their slower songs, and it's always special. It was Kirsty and Kevin doing the bagpipe sound by the way. Always love it when Kevin adds a vocal. ❤ An original? Crossing my fingers for 'Love Again'. You get Avi in that one. I'm absolutely 100% positive that you will love it, definitely your cup of tea. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my proverbial hat. I almost woke little one with my snorted laughter at the pausing gags. Also yes - you need to start hashtagging the grin/grim factor and patent it. Brilliant. 🤣🤣🤣 P S. No Mullet Mitch as of yet. Hmmm. P.P.S. thanks for the shout out & for posting my challenge/poem/ramble thingy. Sorry guys, but this is 10. It's actually a British song. Written by an ex slave trader named John Newton in 1772, it is an account of one person’s conversion story 250 years ago. Newton was a man that despicably sold other human beings in the slave trade. As he states in the hymn, he was a wretch, but God found him. He was saved by God’s amazing grace. I believe that it became the "theme" song when England abolished slavery in 1833, although I'm not sure it was the same melody. When the lyrics reached American, they might have been transplanted into the melody we know today. Given all that, the Pentatonix version is my all time favorite. Love you guys! 😊😊 P.S.: If you haven't heard their version of "The Prayer", here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ_Zq6p3hdahn7c STUNNING!!

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. The perfect song for the group, and the perfect group for the song. There is a vaguely defined stretch of rural, middle America known as the Bible belt. It is a place tourists never see, but I live there. This is the choir at the tent revival 100 years ago, singing from the film, "Oh Brother Where Art Though?" which many people think was not real, but it was, and in some places still is. If Pentatonix do nothing else, this was enough

About the rating system... Some songs are up our alley, and others not so much. Clearly the ones we love have an advantage over the others right out of the gate. But I like to rate the music on how well it was communicated, like was the version true to the message and did it have the desired impact on the audience. So I would have given this the highest score since it is the best delivery of this song I have ever heard, even though the song itself may not be up there among my favorites.

The song was created from a poem which was born from the situation of an English ship captain shipping slaves to the Americas and coming to realize how wrong it was to be part of that process. So it is British and American. 1772 is right in the pre-revolution phase, so not quite U.S., but definitely American. Certainly the Scots have locked it in as standard bagpipe repertoire, inspiring that epic first verse arrangement.

Great reaction. I could see you were smiling inside. 😁 You scored it a 10 inside also. This song is epic for me so I give it a 10. Great to see you took on board the feedback BP1, pause tIming and replay much improved. 😅. Filmed at an open air church, the setting and PTX visual presentation was stunning. One of my favourites. 👍

It’s interesting that you associate this song with America, as an Englishman wrote it. His name was John Newton and he was a slave trader, but became an abolitionist after experiencing the horrors of the trade. PTX version of the song is very beautiful, I love the location they chose, as it adds to the spiritual nature of the song.

Like most people who react to this you didn't seem to notice that this was a mashup and not just straight Amazing Grace its AG and 'my chains are gone' mash up. so those are not the Amazing Grace lyrics. just wanted to point that out bcz most people seem to think these are the lyrics of AG when its not.

Other than when he's singing his solo, Matt's bass line throughout this song reminds me very much of a church organ. I'm guessing that's deliberate, but it's all I can hear when I listen to his voice. Kirstin comes in and lets loose in the last verse, everyone joins in with the "wall of sound", and then Kevin's surprise at the end! A wonderful version of a very well-known song! For an original: how about a couple of songs that Kirstin wrote/co-wrote? @bingobillable Hello to you, you are entitled to give it any score you like and that is the fun of it, you don't have to agree with us two fools. we have never heard the original and this was the fist time hearing it from Home Free, sometimes it may take a few listens to really get it. This was just our fin score for that song, nit the talent which we know is always a 10/10 Hope that helps. Cheers

Don't worry so much about where you pause. Just rewind a bit and all's good. Oh, and try not to pause in the last 30-45 seconds. That causes people to fly off the handle for some reason. Oh, and "bagpipes" was the correct answer. Just sayin'...

Pentatonix amazing as usual. If you haven't already (couldn't see it in your playlist) , you should compare this brilliantly produced version to Sohyang's beautiful stripped back recording. Just Sohyang backed by an acoustic guitar, singing in her usual heartfelt, inimitable gospel inspired style. It's a lovely performance of Amazing Grace. I'm not saying it's better than Pentatonix ...... just different! :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2iyiYypZq9rppY

I'm like that with quite a few of the current 'trending' artists. I recognise the talent, but I'm 'meh' about them. I'm of course a huge PTX fan, but I'm not generally into a cappella. I watch reactions to the other two 'big' a cappella groups, but I don't listen to them in my own time. I'm very eclectic regarding music and will listen to most stuff really, though there's a few genres that make me gag 😆
