There' are other parts, like the couch goes back to Pentatonix's early days of recording.

Sure Avi is not there, but I like Matt better than Avi (Even though I love Avi), I think Matt can do much more than just base with his voice, and his connection with Kevin seems stronger as the duo beatbox/base. Another one which is REALLY NICE, is "The Circle of Life" from the Lion King, I think that is the name of the song.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Dropping out of YALE must have been a shock to his parents, but luckily for Pentatonix and Kevin and all his fans he made the right decision. His parents are very proud of him too! This is a cool video, because it starts and ends with them on a couch, in their early days online, they all sat on a couch like that when singing and this is the last song they do with Avi before he leaves the group. So it starts and ends with them on a couch. Their whole early career everyone said, you should do Bohemian Rhapsody, and they said they would never do it unless they could do it justice, so choosing to do it as their last song with Avi is very symbolic too.

"Daft Punk Medley" was their first Grammy winner. So, PTX got their start on season 3 of _The Sing-Off,_ which was the autumn of 2011. Part of their prize for winning _The Sing-Off_ was a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony. They all moved to California and prepared to start recording, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying they didn't know how to market a cappella. But by this time Pentatonix felt like family. They had all bought into the dream of making a career singing together and they weren't about to give up on it. So they pooled the $200,000 they'd also won and used it as seed money. The four men shared two apartments to cut costs. They lived frugally and they got together every day to arrange songs and rehearse, and whenever they had a new song ready they recorded it on theit iPhones and posted it to KZbin. And their fans from _The Sing-Off_ found them, and subscribed, and then new people found them and subscribed, and they started to get a few patrons, and Sony noticed. Hmm. Maybe a cappella could be marketed after all. "Hey, Pentatonix! We have another subsidiary named Madison Gate. Would you like a contract?" Yes, they wanted the contract. Unfortunately, it didn't come with nice things like a studio, but you take what you can get. So, "Daft Punk Medley" came out in November of 2013. Because they didn't have a studio, they recorded the audio in one of their closets, which had good acoustics. The video was filmed by a company named FifGen. They had a venue set up for filming, but it fell through at the last minute, so someone at FifGen got the idea of buying black bed sheets to use as a backdrop and they filmed it in one of their kitchens. And then it won the Grammy. And again, Sony took notice. Grammys weren't something they expected from Madison Gate. "Um, Pentatonix, we think you might be a better fit with our flagship company, RCA. Does that interest you?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since. Pentatonix has always loved Queen, and they always wanted to cover "Bohemian Rhapsody," but they were afraid they couldn't do it justice, so they decided to wait until they were ready. That took them five years, but it was worth the wait; they were, indeed, ready. This came out in April of 2017, shortly before Avi left, so no, not the same era as "Daft Punk" at all. I believe the thing that makes you think of "Daft Punk" in this is the fact that they used flashlights and running around as a way to simulate some of the (then) state-of-the-art special effects Queen used. Partly this comes from those early habits of frugality, but mostly I think it's just the fact that they had some ideas about cool ways to do things, and they work. And those cheap specials enabled them to film this whole thing in just one night, which is nothing to sneeze at. There's actually a "Behind the Scenes" video about the filming of this; I think you'd enjoy it.

I haven't read through the entirety of the comments to see if someone mentions these but here are a few interesting tidbits on this video. It took them 5 years to feel ready enough to do this song the justice it deserves as all of Pentatonix are huge Queen fans. The Grassi Guitar has no need for the megaphone, it was a prop that Mitch found on the set and decided to use to call attention to the one making the noise, he does it live in concerts without the prop. Brian May of Queen posted the link to their video in his social media and said in one word 'Enjoy!' The visuals of the video are meant to mirror the original video like where they fan out and pan the camera in the beginning and then all line up behind Kirstie to then pop out from behind her for their parts to mirror the trippy visuals of the original. When Mitch is on the couch laying down with the others walking along the side it is meant as a tribute to Freddie's death and the members walking alongside are the Pallbearers of Freddie's 'Coffin'. The way at the end when they are all laying out on the couch is a reference to Queen's cover art of 'Sheer Heart Attack', their use of the couch is a tip of the hat to how they started out making videos on KZbin as well as a reference to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure where they introduced a whole new generation to Queen with the headbanging in the car scene. The starry scape is a tribute to Brian May as an astrophysicist and the four shooting stars represent each of the members of Queen!

Congrats on 40K! The setting for this, i.e. the couch 🛋️, is a nod to when their record contract was dropped about 2 months after they won the TV Show “The Sing Off.” I think you would enjoy reacting to all of their performances, we call them baby Pentatonix because they were all so young. Scott, Mitch and Kirsten were all 19 years old! Anyway, they had already all moved to California into the same apartment complex in anticipation of working on this record contract when it was dropped. They decided to pivot, go to KZbin, and try to make it that way, which obviously worked. But they would have practice sessions at their apartments, sitting around on couches, doing their thing. When they got the approval to do this song it is said they worked a very long time on it and came up with a Masterpiece of the original Masterpiece. I am a huge Queen fan and I think Freddie Mercury would have absolutely loved this. Thanks for the Saturday reaction! 💕

Welcome to the party, Nick, and yes, it is still in full swing. You are picking out the jewels of the Pentatonix catalogue, and there are many more to go. I love how much you are loving Avi. He did give the group a certain gravitas, and his particular contribution has been missed by many, though the current bass, Matt, has his own skills and flair. If you want to stick with some of the oldies with Avi, I suggest an original of theirs, "Love Again," that showcases everyone's strengths in an EDM style, also "The Evolution of Michael Jackson," a fast-paced one-take MJ medley, and a personal favourite, their cover of Kiiara's "Gold," another one-take masterpiece where Mitch does vocal acrobatics and Avi's bass drops are subterranean. Really enjoying you and PTX. Liked and subbed, of course!

When PTX won "The Sing Off", they moved to Los Angeles and into the same apartment complex. All systems go, right? Not quite. The record label that had awarded them their contract as part of their winnings, had a change of executive. He promptly demoted PTX right off the label. Cuz Capella Pop music isn't a thing and it's never gonna be a thing. Right? 🙄 Anyway, the gang got to work by recording KZbin videos sitting on a couch. This video is "about" that. Everyone Gathers on the couch and they fall asleep. They are the transported to OZ (no, wait, that's a different video). They do enter into a dream and then, at the end, wake up back on the couch. It's actually a very fitting metaphor for how PTX's career really did take off.

If you are interested in some stand out moments from Kirstin check out “Seasons of Love.” Also “My Favorite Things” it’s up to you if it matters that that’s a Christmas song. She also has some solo releases.

Now that you have a few Pentatonix songs under your belt, I would like to recommend one of my favorite performances of theirs, Aha! at the Star Vista Hotel in Singapore. It's a live recording off of someone's cell phone, and you will get Mitch slapped hard! Just be aware, Kevin never makes it on camera, but he is there. Another stunning performance which will also give you a little of their history is their final performance in the Sing-Off where they got their start, singing Florence and the Machine's Dog Days are Over. It's breathtaking. I would recommend watching all of their performances through the competition, so you can really understand how they got started, but if you don't want to do that, I would still recommend Dog Days are Over, and their performance of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On.

What the PTX video, Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies. Its a song with no words done by a group that uses no instruments. Pretty awesome.

One of the songs that they won a Grammy for is Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Wrap your head around an acapella group winning a Grammy for an instrumental song. Definitely worth a listen.

Pentatonix bohemian rhapsody insights . So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen. Some of the moments paying respect were: The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded), obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video, the four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist, and the overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover. -The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do. -Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve. -The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on KZbin, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing. Also when Brian Mays heard it..he posted it on his web site with the word "enjoy".

Mitch is doing the electric guitar with his natural voice. The megaphone is a prop. You need to see their live performance on KZbin.

PTX fun fact: Mitch isn't actually using that megaphone in the guitar solo!! That is 100% his voice - there's a video of them singing this live, and he makes the same sound into a microphone

A lot of people have sung this but, i don't really consider them covers because they didnt do it justice. I used to cringe everytime i heard someone was going to sing it. BUT I get the feeling that these guys sat down and said " Okay if we're going to do this we have to do it right." And they did. Quite honestly i have never heard a version other than the original that I liked until I heard this.

Yay! So glad you did this one! I agree with some of the suggestions others have made, Gold is a GREAT example of how clean and consistent they are since it was recorded live/in a single take (though I do agree with the others that you should make sure to listen to the original first if you aren't familiar, becuase it's really impressive what they're able to do with it). I also highly recommend their mashup of New Rules (Dua Lipa) and Are you that Somebody (Aaliyah). I would never have thought the two of those would go together but they make it work so well. Others I'd recommend that you probably won't see recommended as much: Making Christmas from Nightmare Before Christmas and Come Along are both really fun and a great examples of them doing something outside the box. Also - I believe I saw in a previous video that you're into hip hop/rap? I'm not sure if you knew but Mitch and Scott have a side project they've worked on together for years called Superfruit. It's mostly a vlog but they do a lot of music together as well and I'm particularly fond of a few they did, Hip Hop Goes Broadway (there's a part 1 and a part 2) where they do a mashup of hip hop songs done in a broadway style. Keep up the great reactions!

"Daft Punk" was from 2013, just two years after they won the SingOff, when they were still struggling to build their brand. This is from their 2017 PTX Vol 4 (Classics) EP, when they are in a much more secure spot, Grammy winners, lots of KZbin views and album sales. So this was an all-night video shoot with a professional crew, designers, director. AND, though the couch is a reference to their early videos, many shot on a couch in their apartment, THIS couch has an engine.

I didn't read all the previous comments but I did notice all the nods they gave the original Queen music video when the song was first released. The sound moving from left to right is from the original version, the same with the flashlight scene. Enjoyed your reaction!

Stumbled on this when watching a bunch of Pentatonix reaction vids. Only a minute in and know nothing about you yet, but I'm liking, subscribing, and commenting right away because you did something I have never seen anyone do in one of these videos. Before you even asked us to support you, you told people to like and subscribe the original artists. So much respect for that.

I love this cover and Avi's voice always gives me goosebumps in this! If you are looking for suggestions, La La Latch is a fun mash-up, Rather Be features Kirstie in lead and the first Pentatonix video I ever saw was Royals which led me down the rabbithole, lol. They have so many amazing songs though, you really can't go wrong no matter where you start :)

You should see the video that plays them simultaneously with split screen. Just search KZbin for "Pentatonix vs Queen". Everything PTX did to honor Queen is PERFECT. Right down to the angle of mitch's megaphone.

When Queen plays this song live, they walk off stage during the "opera" section so the audience knows they aren't pretending to perform that part. Pentatonix does it all.

The megaphone was turned off; Mitch does the guitar solos live with nothing but a microphone and it sounds the same. Mitch just saw the megaphone lying around on the set and thought it would make a cool prop, and it's been confusing people ever since.

The name is Kevin, not Chris as the beatboxer, I know you're new to this, but just as you I first heard from this group during the Covid lockdown and I'm like how come I never heard of them that they've been around since 2011! You got a long way to go to hear all of when they won the "Sing Off" TV show to their covers and their originals, it's so mind blowing and it made me their #1 fan.
