I had my gastric bypass in 2001, and when preparing for it one of my doctors at the time told me something I never forgot - "Your stomach has no idea what time it is, why you are eating cereal for dinner or having Chinese food at 2 am. Your stomach has no concept of time and doesn't care when or what you eat." And it's totally true of course. Now as you get older, naturally what you eat may not necessarily agree with your stomach but that's different than what the doctor was trying to get across. This idea you can't eat this or that at specific times of the day is ridiculous. The whole concept of "breakfast for dinner" is backwards since the stomach doesn't care about time but it's a great idea nonetheless isn't it? :)

This is the way. I lived in the UK for nearly five years in my early 20s and traveled Europe extensively. My go to move in the UK and Europe was always to ask the locals about the local beer and food specialties. I missed some of the touristy things in favor of experiencing the true local culture. And yes, Brits, don’t be shy about asking locals or servers about how to enjoy foods. The Jolly boys got this part right - when eating BBQ (especially in Texas), cutlery is for the sides, meat is eaten with the hands. Some old school places in Texas (Lockhart) didn’t even serve sides and had signs reading “no forks or knives available.” When in Rome…

The only problem for James and Millie is that the UK doesn't have sausage like our breakfast sausage. Their sausage has different spices (kinda heavy on the cloves and not enough sage) that makes it less than perfect for making true sausage gravy. Their best bet is to find a recipe online for American breakfast sausage and make it themselves at home. It's really not as hard as it might sound, as long as you can get bulk ground pork and some common herbs and spices. When making sausage gravy, everyone that I know, uses bulk ground sausage and not the links anyway.

A couple of tips for your home made B&Gs...always split and butter the biscuits before adding the sausage gravy...and use a healthy dose of black pepper on top of gravy 🔥
@JoeXTheXJuggalo14 ай бұрын
It also depends on the person and their biscuits. Like my mom's home made biscuits are so amazing bo butter is needed and they're so fluffy that no need to cut them in half. I just dump a good pile of gravy on top of them. I'm glad I learned how to make my mom's biscuits. As for the gravy for me it all depends if it does or doesn't have sausage in it. If it does I tone down the salt and pepper. If it doesn't I may add more salt and pepper to taste. To me too much pepper and salt actually ruins the taste. Believe me because I've known some people to have dumped their normal amount of salt and pepper in the gravy while cooking it but when it came to eating it I wass un-edible for me after the first bite.

sorry if anyone has already commented this: biscuits and gravy would have been enjoyed at like 5:30 am before getting out to tend the fields and animals of small farms originally. Of course very few of us live that kind of life these days and don't blame you for thinking it's pretty heavy and hearty for a breakfast food...this was by design to fuel hard-working farmers in the fields, and would have helped stretch sausage further. sausage itself being a way to use the odds and ends kept after the primal cuts of the hog would have been used or sold for income with additional salt as preservative. I like to think, if the pig had a name from being lovingly fed and tended, you would try to extend the meat by creating dishes such as this! :D the gravy is a way of creating something from the grease that renders out of the sausage rather than wasting it. You can also make biscuits in the morning as they don't require proofing/rising like bread.

Let's start with this.... Americans can eat and do eat breakfast food for supper supper food for breakfast. You eat what you want to you're not going to be judged for it. I wouldn't have survived college we're not not for leftover pizza that I ate for breakfast. Breakfast in America Mary from person to person. There is no such thing as an American breakfast. You're going to have for breakfast and option of some kind of pork bacon ham or sausage, eggs cooked however you like them including omelettes scrambled fried. The only thing I don't usually see is poached not many people eat poached eggs and the us. You're going to have some kind of bread or toast if I'm getting waffles or pancakes I don't usually order any kind of bread to go with my breakfast. And then you have options of sides. Some people like sliced tomatoes some people like fruit, others want hash browns or grits. We just believe if it's there and we think it up will try it As far as southern breakfast goes, 1 traditional gravy has some sausage bits or in it or it was cooked with some sausage or bacon grease to give it a little flavoring. My son's a vegetarian so he makes his white gravy without any kind of meat product. He just seasons it with salt and pepper. Try different foods 1 different ways and decide what you like. Don't let society dictate it to you. By the way many people's favorite time to eat breakfast is late at night after they've been out with their friends or they've come home from a ball game or that's one of the things about living in America that makes it worth surviving hurricanes and tornadoes LOL.

If it was a regular taco, sure, but it's just a breakfast taco with just bacon/egg/cheese...it's good and moist enough on it's own.

To be honest, I really don't like salsa on my tacos or burritos. Not much of a spice person.

In my neck of the woods, we don't have biscuits and gravy. We have a meat in a white sauce for breakfast known as Cream Dried Beef. I used to have it as a child for breakfast on Sunday.

I grew up on both. Creamed Chipped Beef over toast was a popular breakfast/dinner in our house as well as B&G.😋

Texas is kind of adjacent to the true grits region of the South, but I definitely add butter and then mix it up, if it has cheese on top like they served, mix it on up and then see if it needs butter or anything else, like a little sugar.
@dalemoore85824 ай бұрын
No sugar. Yuck
@jishani14 ай бұрын
@@dalemoore8582 savory grits are better, i cook mine with chicken stock instead of water and melt the cheese into it as they cook. but if it comes down to plain grits or some people have spiked with butter and sugar, the sugar option tastes like SOMETHING.

Love Biscuits and Gravy!!!!! My Mom didn't make it with sausage growing up but I like it both ways!!!! We mostly had it for breakfast but once a month or so my Mom would fix Breakfast food for dinner......and had to have Gravy and Biscuits!!!! Great stuff!!!!!

As would be true for many of us from the Northeast, you have now eaten more grits than I ever have. You got there with the first spoonful.

Yeah... I've had grits and biscuits with gravy at a hotel buffet, but at no other time. I liked them but probably wouldn't ordinarily order them.

I live in Massachusetts but have eaten grits for more than 50 years. I married a So Carolina man and as soon as I tried them... It was Game On! My babies started on grits as soon as they could eat solid foods, instead of baby pablum. They loved them then and still do as middle age adults. In fact, my son asked me to cook him some cheese grits with scrambled eggs and bacon for his 35th birthday some years back. Even Northerners can cook some grits like a Southerner. Nothing like that Comfort food cooked by Mama!

So you have never eaten polenta, Yankee? Then you have had grits. White corn instead of yellow, only real difference.

@@jeffreysmith236 NOBODY eats grits in south Texas. I never even heard of it until I joined the Navy. Biscuits and gravy is also unknown down here, unless you find one of those gross breakfast buffets that 70-year-olds frequent. Breakfast is served in taco form.

I really like to eat biscuits and gravy with bacon and scrambled eggs. In high school, we ate a lot of French fries and gravy. French fries or Frito corn chips are good with Wolf Brand chilli, shredded cheese, and pickled jalapeno slices. You need them pickled/ canned, so they'll be soft enough to eat.

When I was a boy my grandmother would make grits her's was thick and she added butter with black pepper a pinch of salt it looked like mach potato's then would put a fried egg over easy on top. When I would cut into the egg the yoke would mix with the grits man that was devine for me. Thanks for the memories.
@shadowwitch47964 ай бұрын
I love my grits with an egg on top and i then cut the egg up and the yolk runs into the grits and if i have bacon I will tear that up and add it to the mix. It is not pretty like other meals in the south but oh boy does it taste good. grits is an food that has little flavor itself and will take on and add to the taste of whatever you pair with it.

I'm a classic grits person. I don't like cheese in my grits. extra butter is fine. and only use salt and black pepper, NOT sugar!!!! sugar is for oatmeal porridge. I like to also add 'creole seasoning'. a protein is also good. bacon, cubed ham, sausage, even shrimp or crawfish tails are common.
