@KieroSi7 ай бұрын
@@TheBeesleys99 I know it's become an international tourist attraction but there's so many other options too. There's also bin stores, there's generic ones that have franchised but they're not legit as the proper dollar per pound thrift stores where most resellers hunt. Seriously, next visit, you should try an American flea market & swap meets . . Or one of the many black market alleys, usually not too far from a fashion district. Or look up the largest farmer's markets in the U.S. while many operate year around, the bigger ones have more annual events that are the real show, where the rest of the state (sometimes surrounding outliers along the border) come out to promote their biz and sell their excess... and then of course, you have the standard farmers' faire in many more rural and agriculture towns, more of an exhibition and contest with some fair games, you want the agricultural ones rather than the "county" variety which is a bit more carnival, circus. It's more of a foodie, well, street foodie's paradise... with so many food stands that actively promote heart failure. A wide range of festivals too. . . some you can experience anywhere but Americans do have their own take on things. It's not just music, not just dance, it's a fuller experience and often overwhelming with the amount of people vs say the same events in Europe, especially the uk. You also get some weird ones in smaller, out of the way locations... in Colorado, miles higher than the mile high city of Denver, they have a festival celebrating a town's founding by a brothel madam and race beds down the road... two people per bed, a lad in night clothes and a lass dressed like a wild west harlot. Or there was the testyfesty - it went out a few years ago, it was festival centered around deep fried testicles. a rather rowdy event, but there are similar, more family events centered around rocky mountain oysters elsewhere.

It’s natural for tourists to be excited and fascinated in stores while traveling in other countries because the sections have different food items and snacks brands, that you can’t back home. They’re also sometimes built differently from country to country and have unique features. I went to a Mexican Walmart in the state of Jalisco. The Walmarts over there are pretty much the same as the states except maybe it’s slightly smaller, but not much.

When I started working at Walmart as a cashier, I had to wear a shirt and tie and I was one of the first male cashiers. We were timed by how many items per minute we could check out, including bagging the merchandise. They didn't have that policy at the Supercenters because grocery items are more fragile than hard goods. They only had soda, juice, candy, and snack foods at regular Walmart stores. When I first started, and for a few years after we "went" Supercenter (moving into a Supercenter) visible tattoos, beards, long hair (for guys), facial piercings, and piercings for guys weren't permitted. Only the stockboys (the guys who did maintenance, customer carryouts, gathered carts, and other menial labor) were allowed to wear blue jeans. When they introduced vests, things started getting more casual. As soon as beards were allowed, all the managers tried to grow beards, with varying success. :) We would also load the bags into the customers cart, now the cashiers just fill the bags, leaving it up to the customer to put the bags in your cart. We were also trained to be meticulous with our bagging, to make sure not to put heavy things on top of potato chips, not to put chemicals with food items and different meats in their own bags to prevent cross contamination. Very few cashiers pay attention to details like that any more. Tips are NOT allowed, at all. When a customer insisted, after I took a heavy item out, I would put the "tip" in the donation jar for Le Bon Heur Children's hospital. Walmart is Le Bon Heur's biggest donor. When one of my son's had to go to Le Bon Heur for his heart problems at birth, Walmart had a representative at the hospital make sure my wife and other son were taken care of during his treatment. I had no problem at all requesting more time off. I might not have seen eye to eye with management sometimes, but reflecting upon it years later, it was the best job I ever had compared to others later on. It was like a family, you have quarrels, but it worked out.

Never buy produce or meat at Walmart. While in Texas, buy all of your groceries at HEB. Wherever there is an HEB+, there's a nearby Walmart with like 10 customers in it.
@tvc18487 ай бұрын
I live within about 7 minutes of a Walmart and 10 minutes of an HEB. While our HEB has more meat items like beef ribs and pork belly, the Walmart has a better meat section and it’s cleaner. The Walmart vegetable/fruit section usually blows away HEB but again, HEB has things like fresh bean sprouts that Walmart doesn’t carry. Walmart’s is cleaner, better kept, etc. I split time between them and love HEB’s specialty sections and better selections such as in the Asian foods. Ours has a fish market which is great. Sometimes I hit HEB instead just for the fish market. For most groceries it’s Walmart but for certain items HEB kills Walmart.
@peensteen7 ай бұрын
@tvc1848 I said HEB+, not old HEBs. Walmart is quantity over quality. Walmart Supercenters have substandard quality produce and meat compared to HEB. Walmart has a killer processed food and snack selection (especially breakfast cereals and snacks), but they can't compete with HEB quality in REAL food. Then again, it's like I said about "wherever there's an HEB+", some towns have small, shitty HEBs, and huge Walmarts. My town has a Walmart Supercenter and HEB of equal size, and it's obvious which one is more popular when you see the crowds in HEB. I only go to Walmart for non-food items, or guilty pleasure junk cereals. Even the HEB store brand foods are miles better than Sam's Choice.

I'm sure it varies by region, but from a Southern California native, stores like Walmart and Target are usually called some variation of "department" or "discount" store, not "grocery" store, even though many have grocery departments. "Grocery stores" are much smaller on average (though probably still larger than you are used to), mostly or entirely food or food-related items, sometimes with an aisle or two of "seasonal" items like holiday decorations or things for picnics or grilling. Particularly large grocery stores are also often called "supermarkets", but the lines between the "types" of store are blurry, and getting blurrier all the time.

Walmart started in Arkansas, but they had explosive growth in Texas. The Texas stores are larger and tend to be their "flagship" demo stores where they have more of everything to see how well the products sell. If they sell well in Texas, it will spread to stores in Arkansas and the midwest, then to the Southeast and other regions. They have different price structures because they have regional suppliers with their own costs. Some of the products are also regional, saltwater fishing gear wouldn't sell at all in the Midwest or Minnesota, for example, but most chains are set up that way unless a product is requested or demanded by enough customers. Another thing that controls the sizes of retail stores is the price of real estate. They had a combination Sam's and Walmart Supercenter in New York city once, where the Sam's and half the supercenter were on a ground floor with the home and garden and electronics and grocery items and the clothing was on the second floor to have a smaller footprint. A lot of larger cities are also resistant to having a Walmart Supercenter open because it might put existing businesses out of business, losing their monopoly. The founder, Sam Walton, and his brother Bud were fighter pilots during WW2 and Sam Walton always had a plane to fly around in. As the company expanded, he was able to buy more and larger planes to fly their upper management and guests around, even to the point where they had a cargo plane to fly Sam Walton's old pickup to locations so he could drive himself on store inspections and show his truck off, to act like he was a normal guy, even though he was one of the richest men in the world. A lot of times, when the Vice Presidents or regional managers went on tours, they were ordered to share rooms and rental cars to reduce expenses whenever they could. A funny story, Sam and Bud would fly from store to store to do "surprise" inspections (often a store would see Sam or Bud walk up to the store and immediately send one of the assistant managers to get on the phone to warn their district manager so he could spread the word to give stores a chance to straighten up before Sam and Bud showed up before the end of the day, every store in the district would know Sam was in the area.) During their inspection tours, they would take their CEO, David Glass, who was NOT a fighter pilot during WW2. Often Sam or Bud would see a prospective patch of land they figure would make a good location for a store. They would fly REAL low to get a good look, while David Glass held on for dear life (again, NOT a fighter pilot during WW2). They would land at a local airfield, call up a taxi or a Walmart manager to get a ride to the county courthouse to look up the land records to find out who owned the site and get someone to make an offer to get it cheap, not letting them know it was Walmart wanting to buy the land to avoid driving the cost up. Walmart is one of the largest real estate companies in the US and owns the largest trucking companies in the US, if not the largest, just so they have enough trucks to deliver to their stores plus the various distribution companies that deliver goods to their competitors. They used to pay their truck drivers the same salary as Walmart store managers because Sam would have the drivers give him reports on how the store was being run because the drivers would walk around the store while their truck was being unloaded and no one paid any attention and people would gossip to the drivers, not knowing what they said was going to the owner of the company. Kind of like Undercover Bosses. Another crazy thing, Walmart usually owns a 49% stake in the shopping centers where they build their stores. Their stores pay rent to the landlords (which are half owned by Walmart) and the rent is a tax deduction, so they get to claim nearly half the money they pay themselves as a tax deductible expense. Plus, if they decide to move their store to another location, they can leave their partner behind to try to figure out what to do with an empty retail space that only a store like Walmart could use.
