Completely understand Joel and Lea's negativity here -- If I found an american themed barbecue joint in the U.K. I would have to criticize every inauthentic thing about it, which would probably be almost everything.
@yvonnepalmquist8676
@yvonnepalmquist8676 2 жыл бұрын
If you have a "themed" restaurant, I don't think it's really negative to compare it to the actual cuisine and state what they get right and what they get wrong... it's a comparison/review. I think anyone with an interest in learning/knowledge would appreciate that. I know I do. As someone earlier pointed out however, the menu did not state it was an English breakfast... just a traditional breakfast and as American as the rest of the food on their menu except for their small section of English fare. So I guess they tricked most of us there. I did pause the video to read the menu, and they did at least describe what was coming on the plate. And rarely will the menu be entirely "themed" but have just a section of themed fare as this one did.

Having eaten at a "Texas" steakhouse in the England, I can tell you that you are correct. It was ridiculous and looked like it was decorated by a fifth grader. The rump roast was the closest thing to a NY strip. Now if they had gone to McNamara's, they could have ordered a proper full English breakfast and it would have had a white pudding rather than a biscuit and it would have had a roasted tomato and it would have had Heinz beans. They do a proper full English.

@@ernieb8490 First off, learn to spell so your comment makes sense, secondly, no, it's not their fault when the venue literally claims to be a British-themed pub, regardless of where it's located. @@vladt876 hi! First, Savannah is so beautiful! Definitely the historic downtown. I wish I could remember the names of the restaurants but so many were amazing! If you find “ She Crab”… buy it! It’s the best I’ve ever had. You’ll see the Union Jack Flag and the Irish flag at different pubs. Take a tour bus the first day, the history is so important to understand the square. They sometimes have actors jump onto the buses and act out historical figures. Another really neat place just a drive from downtown is called Wormsloe State Historic Site. It’s pretty incredible and beautiful. Please let me know what you think! :)

The Pub is a chain that is loosely based on a British pub. The best British pub in Nashville is Fleet Street Pub. The Biscuit Love (I was cracking up when Joel kept calling it Love Biscuits) location in Hillsboro Village is less busy than the Gulch location.
@Zetheek
@Zetheek Жыл бұрын
It's loosely based on what someone from the US would think a British pub would be like, not an actual British pub. The podium leading you to your table, not going to the bar, the red phonebox, table service, the menu. The only thing that sets it apart from an American restaurant is the decor that does look like a pub.

I just wrote a comment about my experiences trying Mexican food in middle eastern states. I’ll copy it here to see if you can relate: You guys are trying so hard to be kind and your situation is giving me flashbacks. I’m a native Texan, lived here my whole life except about a total of 5 years in MD, GA, PA and FL combined. I lived in PA for about 6 months doing an internship, and my coworkers kept wanting to take me to their Mexican restaurants, and they’d talk about how good it was and they were sure I would love it. They took me to Chi Chi’s for goodness sake (truly awful) and one or two other local restaurants. They obviously didn’t know just how good Tex-Mex is. I tried to be polite and diplomatic while not lying too much. In MD my husband and I didn’t have that kind of social pressure, but it was the first time either of us had lived outside TX (we were early 30s). Back home we ate Mexican a lot, about once every week. So we tried two or three Mexican restaurants but were so disappointed we gave up. I did fall in love with crab in MD so there’s that. We settled into a routine that came as close as we could find to accomodate our Mexican food cravings. Every Friday night before we went to a movie, we ate dinner at Taco Bell. 😂

The authenticity of a "British Pub" in any city is gonna vary. It's never gonna be perfect because there are not really "pubic houses" in the US. it's common to have a "ethnic" restaurant that has authentic items right alongside the regional cuisine of the area. For example, I knew of a British Pub in San Francisco and you could get bangers and mash but they also had American fair like burgers, hotdog, sandwich. And they do that because sometimes people just come in to drink beer and they just want what they are familiar with. Thus in the south you're gonna get scotch eggs but also biscuits and gravy on the same menu. Now if you hunt around, especially for big city pubs that are run by brits that show weekly English Premier League matches live, you'll get a more authentic experience. Often, again, cause they are run by British expats. That said, they'll still have some american fair like burgers, or sandwiches or something else alongside fish and chips cause burgers sell well. Buffalo wings sell well. Ya know? Think of it this way. It's sort of how a British McDonalds might still have a Big Mac but also slightly alters it's menu to please it's British Customers. Like maybe they serve an authentic british made tea alongside coffee or instead of it. The gravy is white because it's made with a light roux not a dark roux.

Biscuits in the U.S. south are different than anywhere else in the country. The key is the type of flour, which is made from winter wheat. Winter wheat grows primarily in southern states and the most popular brand of flour for making buttermilk biscuits is White Lily. It's what makes them so light and fluffy. Southerners who move away to different parts of the country often have friends or relatives ship flour to them. Btw, biscuits are best when you make one giant biscuit in an iron skillet and just break off as much as you want to eat.

Tourism and entertainment are such massive parts of the economy here in Nashville so places and attractions are open all weekend to serve visitors (I straight up don't go downtown on the weekends if I can help it; it's always so packed!), which is why you were bumping into things being closed on weekdays-it's to give employees a day off since they didn't get a traditional weekend break :) That's probably also why you got a better rate on your AirB&B since you booked weekdays. @joelandlia what do ya mean about sports on TV would not happen? I visited London and ate at a few pubs near Paddington Station. One had 1 TV in a seating area, above a fireplace. The others had TVs on wall of main seating area. We watched SOCCER (lol) while I ate fish and chips.

Our biscuits are soft because typically you’d eat them with gravy and you just use your fork to cut them. If they were hard you’d need a knife and it wouldn’t be as convenient to eat them.

That was a bit all over the map. Big cities around the US usually have very good pubs with an authentic menu and local items as well. I can get a completely authentic Full Monty fry up in LA. Glad you were able to experience THE BISCUIT, they are different than scones, but I like them too. To be honest, I would have trouble finding a biscuits and gravy breakfast in LA in many places.

You guys are trying so hard to be kind and your situation is giving me flashbacks. 😂

The twinings tea is the same company you have back home. The packaging is different for over here tho. the same way Coco puffs in the UK are called cocoa Krispies over here.

White heavy is made with milk, and a roux, flour and fat. Biscuits are good anytime if the day and sweet or savory. Not all Biscuits aren't created equal, some are as dry as the desert.

If a restaurant advertises British breakfast, it must have the beans and tomatoes.

I feel for you. We have a couple of "British" pubs where I live and the one you featured looks like it's in Central London compared to the ones here. We don't bother with them anymore. We just wait until we get to the UK and enjoy. Cheers!

Scotch egg: It may be that health regulations require restaurants to fully cook eggs, as eggs in America actually have to be refrigerated due to what happens to the eggshell during the process of getting them to market.

A few years ago in Krakow, Poland, I ordered “American Style” apple pie and was surprised when it was a square of white cake with some diced apples on top. Having traveled a bit in the last few years, I’ve learned it’s a mistake to expect an authentic representation of something from back home and to just appreciate new experiences. That’s the fun of traveling so don’t compare and create contests! As far as the canned beans for breakfast goes, l saw that for the first time in Edinburgh, Scotland. My reaction was “what the hell? Pork ‘n beans?” That’s what po’ folks eat in Tennessee (me as a kid and I ate my share) but not for breakfast! I reminded myself of my new motto and got over it.

Visit Charlotte. The Big Ben's Pub has a brilliant Full English Breakfast. They have a Banger rather than Black Pudding, but definitely has eggs, roast tomato, mushroom, and beans, and potato. To serve the local public, they are like a sports bar. Hey do have burgers, but also have fish & Chips, Steak & Kidney Pie, Cottage Pie and Cornish Pasties.
