It was probably the alcohol that made your meal so much more expensive. Alcohol in the states is very expensive in comparison to England. I imagine it is the same in Canada In the states now you will find most restaurants have the different tip amounts at the bottom of the receipt and it often starts at 18%, sometimes 16%. I feel that is the way restaurant owners are giving their staff a raise by making the customer feel obliged to increase the amount of their tip. At diners I tip 20% as it amounts to very little extra, but at a restaurant I’ll tip 15% if the service is slow or the waitress makes mistakes or if the food is just not that good. Otherwise, I’ll tip 18% upwards as wait service in restaurants is a commission based job and wait staff get paid roughly $2 an hour and the rest they have to make up for in tips. I don’t know what it’s like in Canada, but it’s really bad in America. Whenever I go home to England for a visit nowadays I always over tip at restaurants and waiters and waitresses just love me!! 🤣🤣 I know I shouldn’t do it as it sets a bad precedence, but it always takes me a few shocked faces as to my generosity before I realise I’m tipping too much. 🙊

Refills. In the States I have found that wait staff seem to judge their own work by amount of free refills they give. So one refill 10% tip , two refills 15% tip , etc. Whereas in Canada they seem to judge their service with greatest amount of quality service with least amount of interference. So wait staff are use to being signalled. Raise your hand, get their attention. Ask for refill or tell them your order is wrong it gets changed. Once food is delivered to table it is yours. They don’t take away because it’s just bad policy to have people wondering what they did to it. Did you give it to someone else? Gross. Or did you simply throw it out? In which case customer is wondering why did you waste all that food? If customer leaves. They just have thrown out cold instead of hot. Mushroom Head. Please tell me you guys have “Mario Cart” in the U.K.? Tipping in Canada is normally 10-20%. You were however in Hooters. So it’s typically more. Now speaking as Heterosexual Male who has been in Hooters a few times. Judging simply by what I saw when you filmed waitress. You were not being given the typical service. The typical service usually involves lots of stretching and increased opportunities to view down the blouses of the wait staff. Typically there is also a long wire that the wait staff place the order on the end of. Then yell out order. Then stretch and bounce and send order down wire. Well you get the picture. Had it been two gentlemen. The waitress would have hung around (over?) the table more. You will maybe not have noticed but no tables look up to wait staff. All tables are tall. So that when wait staff approach’s you can look into blouses of staff.

About 15 years ago, I was sent off to manager training at Nyack, New York in December. A blizzard blew in and socked the entire area in a couple feet of snow. The Holiday Inn where they'd put all of us trainees up was on the very edge of town, atop a hill at the end of a lonely, empty road. At the bottom of the road, within easy walking distance (even with the snow) was a Hooters. About 5-6 of us trainees went down there. We were the only customers there, and the only staff was one Hooters girl and the bartender/manager. So she brought out a deck of Hooters cards, and we all played with her and the manager for a good 2-3 hours, never having anyone else come in the door. He kept making up plates of wings and bringing us pitchers of beer, and at the end of the night, I think it only cost all of us like $20 each. It was a great time, and ever since then, I've always really enjoyed Hooters.

Just a heads up in the US 15%-20% is a normal tip. The wait-staff only gets paid around 2 dollars an hour so they rely on the tips to make money. I personally tip more if my bill is small. So if I only spend 15 dollars at a restaurant I'll leave at least a 5 dollar tip.

Tips, at least in the US, usually range 15%-20%. Unless they were downright rude/unaccommodating you’d always tip at least 15%. 15% is usually on the low side and reflects the service you received. Average good tip is about 18% and a really good server who goes above and beyond (checking on you, clearing plates, good attitude, refilling your drink without having to ask) would earn closer to 20% or more. This should also always be based on pre tax amounts. Never tip on the full bill total but on the cost of the actual food/drink. As someone said before, their wages are much lower than minimum wage and they rely on tips as their bread and butter.

It was fine, no greater or worse than other wing sauces I've tried. Speaking of grocery stores, when you guys do your food shop in Orlando if there's a Publix near the Wood's home perhaps you could do a video reacting to the UK section of their international aisle. The one at my local Publix also contains a few products from Ireland and Australia.

My experience shows a difference in how tips are handled between the US and Canada. In the US, they take your credit card to the register, then bring back a receipt to write the tip on and sign. In Canada, they bring a credit card-reading device to the table, and it usually allows you to push a button for the percentage that you want to add as tip. This is available at some US restaurants where you pay at the register rather than the table.

J&L, since you went to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side, you could have gone to Buffalo, NY, the originator of Buffalo wings. Hence the name "Buffalo". It's a hot sauce with varying recipes depending on the restaurant or maker. Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY, is the originator of Buffalo wings. Hooters was one of the earlier restaurant chains to feature Buffalo wings and not just have them as an appetizer. Later chains would increase expectations of wing quality. They did not retain the Hooters gimmick of buxom waitresses as the main reason to go.

The wrong order is just going to be thrown away, anyways, so it's better customer service for you to keep the food. Depending on the restaurant, many servers prefer tips over hourly pay. $100 an hour during dinner service is not unusual for an upper midrange restaurant, or a touristy one.

20% is considered standard tipping in the U.S. Some people start at 20% and go up or down from there, depending on the service. I personally always tip 20% at any sit-down restaurant, as long as I believe the server was at least making a good effort. If the waiter or waitress goes above and beyond, then I will tack on a little extra. This is commonly known etiquette, especially among food servers or friends and family of servers, as many times tips are factored into their overall wages, meaning the are payed much less hourly than most jobs, because of tips. The idea is that, if you can't afford to leave a proper tip, then you shouldn't have rang up that large of bill.

Love Buffalo sauce and blue cheese dressing or crumbles on a chicken sandwich. BTW 15% tip is average in the US but during Covid I’ve been tipping 20-25% because service jobs were not paying well and restaurants were shutting down because they didn’t have servers. I know it shouldn’t be on the customers back to make up for the lack of payment to their employees but I feel bad for them.

In Canada, 15% is adequate , although I would tip higher. In the US, States vary widely. In Texas where I worked as a waiter for 30 years, most restaurants paid the US tipped minimum of $2.13 an hour. For me, My income was almost solely based on tips . And most people in Austin understood that and tipped much higher than 15% . Many tipped 25 to 30% especially on low tabs.

Believe it or not, we have, and have had, virtually all the major US retail and restaurant chains for decades. In fact, many American multinationals consider Canada to be part of the domestic market. We drive the same kind of cars, our suburbs and houses pretty much look the same as American houses and suburbs. Truth is, most things that Americans think are uniquely American aren't, they're equally available in Canada too, because it's actually a one giant North American market and popular culture.

I would say it is 50/50 whether the restaurants leave the wrong item and you can have both, provided the mistake is clearly not someone just gaming the system. Often they will ask if you want it removed or keep (or to go) but not always. At least in the US, though ime Canada is similar on that count.

@@johnp139 I imagine most would toss it if the customer doesn't want to keep it, but that's not the question. The question was whether it is left with the customer or removed for whatever reason, and whether the customer was asked or it was simply removed without asking. In the US most will offer you the option of keeping both unless it's an obvious scam or you are known for trying to have the system at that establishment. But that's not universal even here, and I would not assume it's universal in other countries either.
