native new yorker here: the peanut butter/bacon burger is definitely real, as well as the shandy. the peanut butter will come on the side, as well as some pickles (definitely makes it better). not sure what went wrong with this location, but it's definitely available at most shake shacks i've been to.

Carbs on carbs pretty much always works. Surprisingly less sweet bread seems to work better than using a brioche or pandesal. Though obviously those are delicious as well. The important part is to not use a hard bread, as that just makes the ice cream squeeze out the sides as you try to bite into it. ;)

You can’t just ask for the secret menu item because they’re so secret that shake shack themselves don’t know about it. What you need to do is order the things in a certain way and put them together yourself……When ordering the beer of your choice, ask if they can fill part of the glass with lemonade to make a Shandy. For your peanut butter bacon sandwich, ask for a side of peanut butter spread when you order a ShackBurger with added bacon. Add the PB sauce yourself and change your life forever. Order a frozen custard and ask for a side of grilled hamburger buns, for an ice cream sandwich. Ask for chopped sport peppers to be added into your Cheese Fries, for sport pepper cheese fries.

Yeah, I think only some locations (no matter the fast food place) make them. And if the employee is newer, they are probably less likely to know what the person is talking about. And also less able to figure out how to charge for them and know what they can and can not do. Can't blame that employee like some people have in the comments. I don't think it is not wanting to do more work, it is not wanting to get reprimanded for doing something he shouldn't.

Yea I think they were just surprised because they assumed that secret menus were common in America after experiencing In and Out. In and Out is basically the only restaurant that actually embraces their secret menu and keeps it off the menu. For most other places if people create a secret menu item that people like they usually just add it to the menu before it gets well known.

I remember visiting NYC from Sweden in 07 and 08 and eating at the original Madison location and have somewhat of religious experience. We did not have anything close to it back home and even my mother who was in her fifties at the time was blown away by the burgers. We were among the first but needed to wait 20-25 minutes due to the amount of orders everyone made. Ahh lovely memories.

Ice cream sandwich is actually a street food in Singapore. We will use a piece of normal breakfast bread (not the German type) and place a scoop of ice cream in it, then fold it in half to hold the ice cream and eat it. It's so darn good on a hot day. It is definitely not disgusting because you are supposed to finish it before it melts badly, and the bread being slightly salty works very well with the sweetness of the ice cream. And you don't have to cut it up like cutting a waffle, and create a mess with melted ice cream on the plate.

The ice cream-bread combo is very common here in Indonesia. Interestingly, not in any fast food restaurant but you can actually find the combo being sold by street food vendors. Typically, you can find at least one seller outside a school 😁

Secret menus are just custom orders that have become popularized. So instead of saying the name of the item, it might be better to specify what you want like instead " Yo, I want the the reverse burger" , say you want a burger with the buns in between the patties instead for example.
