I'm pretty sure they drove back from Texas, where it was fabricated, pulling it behind a truck 🚛😝🤭

I am from north central Texas. It took a long time for me to figure out how big ketchup was outside Texas. Because of all the German, Polish, Czech and similar Central European immigrants in the 19th century mustard has always been king in Texas. Growing up I rarely saw anyone use it for anything other than fries…I even used mustard on my fries and still can not stand ketchup to this day. Texas burger chains, most prominently Whataburger, don’t put ketchup on their burgers unless customer requested. Mustard is the default. As a kid when I ate potato salad it was served hot, tossed with mustard, bacon, onions and drippings. We visited family in deep east Texas (The Big Piney) and when I was a child and presented with southern potato salad I thought I’d been tricked. I’ve grown to enjoy the mayonnaise based southern potato salad but still pine for the delicious German inspired hot Texas mustard potato salad. I also agree with Detective “Dirty” Harry Callahan, SFPD: Ketchup on hot dogs is the most disgusting thing in the world. I would also extend it to corn dogs as they are basically hot dogs. Their batter is supposed to be pretty sweet. Ketchup tends to be sweet but the vinegary bite of mustard is a nice contrast.

Corn dogs aren't corn dogs unless they are State Fair brand corn dogs.
@oilfieldtrash7588 Жыл бұрын
I remember as a little child going to the state fair in Dallas. They’d give each student a free ticket and each school district had its own day-off for attending. They’d batter and deep fry the corn dogs right in front of you. As a kindergartener to like 2nd grader I recall carrying that thing around was like an adult holding a baseball bat. As a side note: I you can ever get your hands on the green can/label Dr.Pepper, do it! That’s the stuff made out of real cane sugar. It tastes so much better than the corn syrup. When you come back to Texas try to find an HEB. They have their own store brand cokes made of cane sugar. The Sprite, Big Red and Coke knock-offs are better than the real thing. Larger HEBs also have their own in-store restaurants that are either BBQ joints or taquerias, depending on region. The food is always good.

In all fairness and as I understand it. British beef is leaner than the USA. So if you are going to Smoke it you might want to wrap it in foil with beef fat (tallow I think you call it) on it. In the USA outside of the cities a lot of people will buy whole cow or a half cow from local ranch send it to the butcher bring it home in select cuts and freeze it. they get the beef fat with that.

Part of the reason it’s “better” aside from technique is the wood used in Texas. There are bbq places in New York and other states that will fly to Texas just to bring back wood from a species of tree native to the southeast and growing all over Texas. You can smoke meat with lots of different wood but apparently there is something about this type of wood that makes superior bbq (it’s Post Oak, Mesquite is second).
@jontastic Жыл бұрын
That corn dog looked more like a corn sausage. Probably tastes better than the normal hot dog inside. The exterior looked good, browned and slightly crispy. As for ribs, my experience is that pork ribs are more tender, probably due to the extra fat and pork is slaughtered at a younger age, making it less tough.

Part of my family (my mother's side) has been in the U.S. since before the American Revolution and my father's side has been here since before the Civil War and I have to say, this stuff is almost as foreign to me as it is to you. I grew up in South Jersey, outside of Philadelphia, and we didn't have a lot of this. We had hoagies, cheese steaks, pizza, etc. The U.S. is a big place and what you are trying to portray here is just one part of it. Many Americans would be equally unfamiliar with first hand experience of some of these things, although they might know all the components by osmosis.

As an American who used to watch the Dukes of Hazzard on the first go around on TV, it is so nice to see someone excited about seeing the General Lee. Because here in America, about five or so years ago, when people started getting offended by EVERY LITTLE THING for no reason, the confederate flag was banned from everything, including Amazon, and that included the General Lee car. All Dukes of Hazzard was wiped out in America, both on TV and with their merchandise. That was a great show and I’m so glad to see people getting excited over it. Great cars! I totally want to see Mr. H in a mullet! 🤣🤣🤣 And it’s totally awesome to see that there are parts of the world that don’t actually hate us, as some people keep repeating incessantly. My brother that got killed on his motorcycle had a beautiful 1941 Ford cherry Red pick up truck that looked like the Shiney Red one there. He had a mustang engine put in it. Growing up my 2 older brothers had old Triumph sports cars & my dad had a old black Morris Minor station wagon with cherry wood on the back part that had the dual doors. My dad went to Vietnam & my oldest brother ruined it & put big flower power stickers on it. My mom made my brother stay with a friend for a month when my dad came home. Seeing the shape of his car made him cry , he loved that car so much. I even loved it as a little kid I rode in the back with sliding windows. So some Americans love English cars too.

Wow that is a great American Festival Mr H and Mrs H! Did they serve drinks in red solo cups? I did not see any of those in the video.The Ohio State Fair is going on right now this week. I am not going this year. But you can get a foot long corn dog at the State Fair. I like mine with a little yellow mustard. Great choice of American background music when looking at the cars and trucks!

Mrs. H, give the ribs another go when you are up to it. Controlling the heat is the key. 325 to 350 degrees. Close your smoke box a bit more and open the chimney vent to half way. 8 to 10 hours. Something you start early on a nice day. You'll get it. It runs deep when you do. Dry rub and no sauce until it's close to being done. Fall off the bone goodness.

We have a little street festival nearby every year, called the "Hogeye" festival, deep in the heart of you know where. Classic cars, bike parades, BBQ competition, rides, vendors and food all over. Your experience seems somewhat authentic, except for the food, not quite up to the task, but they got the right idea. Side note : slaw and vinegar isn't any Texan BBQ I've seen.

That's Carolina Style ribs probably. They do a vinegar based sauce. Never had it, but it really wouldn't be my thing. But, I do have a philosophy in life...."any rib is better than no rib". I'd give it a try but I know it wouldn't measure up to other states that do more traditional bbq rubs and sauces. jmho.

Looked like a really fun time. Glad you found an excellent BBQ place. You can now gauge any BBQ you come across. And you got to have mustard on that corn dog. Course my wife would say ketchup. But, I tell her she has no good taste. I mean, she married me!
