I just hated the Ralfie storyline. They’d already done the Jiley cheating storyline, and with Riley now cheating on James it just felt so out of character, because I don’t know a single person who would actually cheat on their partner if they’ve already gone through the emotional turmoil of being cheated on themselves, ESPECIALLY someone as in tune with their emotions as Riley.

I absolutely love this solo and sometimes do some of those moves when I'm dancing, it's definitely one of the solos I remember the most. About what you said regarding jiley, I never thought about that dependency thing before, and I'm sure whenever I go back to rewatch the earlier seasons (which is often cause TNS is practically my comfort show at this point) I'll realize just how dependent they are. I think for me, the best outcome for jiley would have been for them to break up and stay that way for some years. Give them both time to grow into themselves and find their own path in life, and then when they're older find each other again and see if there's any connection still there (ideally, there would be and they would end up together, more mature and like you said less dependent).

I think Jiley passed through a problem many couples pass through in fiction that is if they got together much before the end of the show (or the departure of the characters), instead of writing how they work out as couple, the writers tend to come up with some drama to fall them apart and then slowly make them get together again. And the cycle repeats on and on. It happened with Ross and Rachel, it happened with Ted and Robin and it happened with James and Riley. And that's why I personally prefer to imagine they've stayed together. Precisely cause in the end of the day we've had not much of them together in the show. Not without some drama in the middle. Yet the times we've had it they worked so well. I think Riley helped James to grow as a more responsible and commited person. And James helped Riley to become more confident and brave. So I'd love to see them as more mature couple nowadays. But that's a me thing.

I completely agree that Jiley had a toxic sense of codependency, as a kid watching the show these aren't things you pay much attention or look too deep into. As an adult now there are many red flags in their relationship that would essentially realistically caused it to fall apart as the years went on. Obviously it's kids television so that sense of reality and realism isn't brought into the show, which is why the earlier seasons were far better because they dealt with real issues like infidelity, Michelle's being heavily bullied, her parents getting divorced and her having mental health issues etc.

When I first watched this solo I was a lot younger than I am now, I was around 9 years old or something, and I was a ballet dancer but nowhere near pointe. I'm now almost 16 and I've been doing pointe for about 2 and a half years and I now have so much respect for how difficult a whole dance is on pointe!!! Love this solo so much and so cool to hear so much backstory on it!

I agree that there were some issues with jiley, especially in season 4. Along with other comments that jiley got caught in the trap where if a couple gets together early on in the series, their storylines usually end up with a lot of drama and cheating. However in saying all of this, my absolute favourite dance out of all of the tns, was the jiley internationals duet. The song, the story, the emotions, just everything about it is utter perfection!

It's honestly so interesting to hear Ur take on jiley especially since I was obsessed with them when I was younger. I few months ago I rewatched Ur reaction vids to season 1 and you mentioned how Riley loses her independence in that as well and makes me think what Riley could have been like if she hadn't dated James. Like the four seasons she was a main character in, her big storylines always revolved around james in some way. I guess what im saying is that it wouldve been cool for her to have major storylines with other characters. But i guess because jiley was so popular it just made sense for why they would have so much screen time and storylines. I don't think I'll ever not like them simply because I loved them growing up but your points definitely give me a different perspective.❤

14:25 - Again, I completely agree with your analysis on Jiley. I know it’s an unpopular opinion among the fandom and I know Jiley is iconic to the show but they only worked in Season 1 for me. As soon as they start being unfaithful to each other, they’re no longer compatible in my eyes. They even both continued to date the people they cheated with on each other which gave me the implication that they were no longer on the same wavelength even though they ended up getting back together in the end which didn’t really work for me. James kissing Beth wasn’t really taken seriously by many characters (at first) and Riley getting back with James after dating Alfie happened too quickly (with little effort compared to the list thing). Season 2 and 4 was a very toxic journey for them. I said it before but I think Season 4 missed a good opportunity to explore Riley as her own individual character rather than tying her to James all the time. But after they both cheated on each other, I just didn’t really see a long term future for them even if they patched things up. And they started to become very toxic to me because of this (and also the heavy dependency as you said) which is why I don’t think they should have lasted as a long term couple. The Riley/James/Alfie storyline provides juicy drama which can be entertaining but it also comes at the cost of damaging the characters which is unfortunate. Season 3 had Ella influencing Riley to become more relaxed and comfortable in her own skin which I really liked and I think Season 4 could have built upon that further by making Riley the new dance captain of A Troupe instead of the new studio head which would really allow her to focus more on herself as a newfound leader and the things that she loves to do including her dancing. Alfie also deserved better as a character because I feel like he didn’t get enough appreciation for his dancing skills or even his gentle and kind nature because of people only viewing him as the guy who stole Riley from James. 16:57 - I also agree with this as I also wanted Riley to become more independent after James left the studio. This is why she should have become Dance Captain for Season 4. This would allow her to become more bold, independent and also utilise the lessons or even skills that she learnt from both Emily and Michelle. It would even allow her to flesh out her dancing skills more to the point where she gains a completely new perspective while also helping out the new A Troupe dancers. I thought it was really unfair and the completely wrong move for Kate to make Riley the new studio head because she wasn’t experienced enough in that field and it put too much pressure on her. Being dance captain would have really helped polish and flesh out those newly found leadership skills. She could then decide to split with James because of the long distance relationship not working out, she could then remain to be friends or at least civil with both him and Alfie. And then she can decide to leave to go to business school as we saw in the Off Season between Season 4 and 5. I feel like that would have done Riley so much justice with her independent journey. Or at least with what could have been for Riley. When The War Is Over is such a good solo for Riley. I also love how they utilised this dance more than once when Riley and Emily were trying to foil Amanda’s plan in taking down The Next Step. Watching this brings back so many memories of the strong sisterhood between Riley and Emily in the early seasons. I love the sombre mood of that song. I still wish Riley could have performed this at Internationals as a backup dance after Ella stole her original solo.

I totally agree with the whole dependency thing with James and Riley. As a girl who watched the show when you were on it, to have that representation of a teenage female as someone who only exists in conjunction with her male counterpart was, to be honest, kind of saddening. Because I didn't know any better at the age of like, 8, I thought that that was what the future held for me. It was through TNS's portrayal of Michelle in later seasons and also my exposure to other forms of media and subsequently other high school narratives, that I was able to understand that this wasn't the norm for real-world teenagers. I think if Riley had been given the chance to exist more as an individual rather than half of a pair, young girls like me would've come to the realisation that her dependent relationship with James was an exception to realistic standards.

13:02 ADR is not only used in indoor areas like dance studios but also used whenever you’re filming in certain outdoor environments. For example, if it’s too windy when a scene is being filmed, the dialogue can’t come through clearly on the recording so production teams and actors have to ADR the dialogue to make sure that the scene plays out as intended.

I clearly remeber being so sad about this dance of Riley because i was so heart broken about the jiley situacion 😂 And second thing I like that you talk about your hair in season 2 because when I was watching the show at 12 years old I promise myself that when I turn 18 i want it to cut my hair like Riley's in that season and I did it the next day of my 18 birthday. Thanks for being such an inspiration to me then and now ❤. Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷 (sorry if my english Is bad)

Love your content Brit! I have a few questions, which scenes from your time on the next step challenged you the most as an actor? Are there any moments, scenes or dances that you are really proud of? Finally, who do you wish you had gotten to film more scenes with from the cast and what do you think those scenes might have looked like?

12:15 ahaha this brought back memories of my time at uni (my degree specialised in sound) where I had to make all the sound for a chase scene. I spent hours in the studio recording a friend just panting, and she recorded me running on the spot 😂

Even before any relationship, she would be heavily lead by Emily so I fully understand Riley never really having her own thing going on

I have no idea where to find it but I remember you did a tutorial for TNS to help people learn part of the dance, I think from 5:34 to 6:10, and I was 12 at the time and I had just passed Grade 4 ballet and bought my first pair of pointe shoes, and this was the first dance choreo I tried on point! Also where I learned what a Russian Fouette was! this whole solo is so nostalgic for me and it so fun to hear the bts.

Could you do a reaction video to your favourite group dance from the first three seasons? Also you're amazing and were my favourite character on the show, sending love from Australia!
