The concert was at a time when you had MTV merch but the song was originally done in 1975. It was a blend of country and rock so you could truly hear it every where from the high school dance to the sale barn cafe and not many people objected to it.

I remember when the album came out. Charlie Daniels was just getting some air play and used to hitch rides with these guys to shows . Couldn’t imagine being on the bus with these guys and Charlie and the CDB . Britt give Long haired country boy by Charlie Daniels Band a listen. I promise you will get a kick out of that. And it is a perfect southern rock song.

The original Marshall Tucker band split in the mid 80's. The original lead guitarist who wrote most their songs & sang on Can't You See was Vietnam Veteran Toy Caldwell. His brother Tommy was also a founding member, but died in 80 of a head injury. Basically, they were finished by then. Anything after this is just not the real article. Toy passed in 1993.

You would LOVE their song Searchin’ For A Rainbow (so would everyone else!!!).👍🏼😁 The line you couldn’t get was, “Now my widow she weeps by my grave, Tears flow free for her man she couldn’t save, Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame, All for a useless and no good worthless claim.” He was part of the Gold Rush and a claim jumper shot and killed him to steal his claim (which was a piece of land that they staked out to dig for gold.

The story I heard was Toy got the inspiration while he was a Marine in Vietnam. Hearing all the Dear John letters his company's guys were getting while they were there. A note, he was wounded in the leg and they shipped him to a base hospital. They were going to ship him home, but he snuck out and returned to his company and completed his tour. I think, like others that were in Vietnam, came back with what we know as PTSD. I think he had been self-medicating until he eventually died of a cocains overdose, My dad went to Vietnam 3 times and he drank and drank as his self medication of choice.

Another one of those legendary southern rock groups that came out right after the Allman Brothers Band and about the same time that Lynyrd Skynyrd was making their name. Saw them in 1983 in Fayettville, N.C when I was stationed at Ft. Bragg. They were the opening act for the Charlie Daniels Band and both put on a fantastic show. Charlie Daniels came out and played the fiddle with Marshall Tucker on Can't You See, which was their last song of the night. Both bands put on outstanding shows that night.

This is from their 1975 album SEARCHIN' FOR RAINBOW and that title track was also a hit - the theme is the California Gold Rush. I tell everyone to listen to the title track from their second album A NEW LIFE (1974), as well as TAKE THE HIGHWAY from their self titled debut album (1973).

Britt! This is a song all about a family from the Carolinas (Where Marshall Tucker is from) selling everything, and heading West to California in the Gold Rush of 1849! Like many of the "49-ers" they arrive, file a "Claim" on a piece of land to dig for gold... only to be seduced by the rowdy sin of the Boomtowns... until a "Gun of Fame" shoots down our songwriter for his "Worthless, no-good claim" leaving his widow to "Weep beside my grave" at his passing.

This was a fun reaction as always, but I wouldn’t call this the greatest southern rock song ever by any means. Not even the best MTB song, in my opinion. The best MTB song, in my opinion, is probably Heard It In a Love Song. Best southern rock song, imo, is Gimme Three Steps by Lynyrd Skynyrd. That song is particularly cool to hear live. It’s based on a true story, too. 🙂

Parts of South Carolina are a little bit behind, so that's why it feels like the '70s even though it's later. Good Southern Rock; hard to pick the "best", Skynrd, Allman Brothers, I'd put the Eagles in there, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Lots of good stuff.

"Now my widow she weeps by my grave, tears flow free for her man she couldn't save ..." That is what he was singing that you couldn't make out Britt. The album version is much better than this live performance, where they did not balance out the instruments properly or clearly in the audio mix. Live recordings could be a hit and miss affair, and some still are, especially the musicianship where they may have been imbibing freely of who knows what before the concert.
