Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show was a hoot. So many of their most fun songs were written by the great Shel Silverstein. Next time you're in the mood for a kick, react to Dr. Hook's song "Cover of the Rolling Stone." It'll make you smile. Guaranteed. I think the leap from '70s music to '80s music occurred the moment Kim Carnes sang "Bette Davis Eyes." It was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for NINE straight weeks and won the 1982 Grammy for song of the year. You can't hear that song without recognizing it as '80s music.

They were known as Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show when they first hit with "Sylvia's Mother." The name was shortened to just Dr. Hook in 1975. The smooth lead singer was Dennis Locorriere (b. 1949). As for the music switch into the synth-pop '80s, that seemed to start with robotic songs like "Cars" by Gary Numan and "Pop Muzik" by M. Pretty soon everyone, including Bruce Springsteen "Dancing in the Dark," his biggest hit) were using synthesizers and/or drum machines. Michael and Janet Jackson had many hits with that sound (listen to the opening of "Billy Jean," that's the '80s sound).

The overall sound of music changed in the early 80's when Roland, Moog and Korg Synthesisers became polyphonic, When the Roland Jupiter 8 ( the king of all synths) came out, the 80's sound really took off.

Great question Britt. Easy for me to anewer because I lived though it all. The transition occurred due to the following music influences 1) 60's classic rock and mainstream stereo, 2) 70's psychedelic/hard/synth/progressive rock as musicians had fun with stereo and technology in music, 3) Disco, 4) MTV (1981) made visuals equally important to music which pissed many musicians off, 5) MTV gave birth to 80's pop and punk rock; From there, everything went to shit, songs about the sweetness of love, amazing relationships and being true ended. The music industry shifter to 7) rap/hip hop and artists focused on guns, crime, hoes, gansta life and how bad the world sucks.

Music like this just doesn’t exist anymore. Music is both a paradox and a paradigm shift. Throughout each era and genre across all music styles is the evolution and creation that will never be of what once was. Rather what it will become next. Music has the ability to be infinite in every nature possible. Past is gone but not forgotten and the future remains to be created. All different but all the same. All comes down to one universal word. Music.

The "defining line" that you mention, I believe was the result of DISCO. When disco became a thing, suddenly everyone tried to get mileage out of it. As if by magic, suddenly it was OK for bands to play stuff we'd never heard from them before...and somehow just be ok with it! Example :Kiss, I Was Made For Lovin You. Queen, Another One Bites The Dust. Stones, Miss You, Pink Floyd, Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2/Run Like Hell For many, these massive departures from the norm were the source of much angst and derision. And they certainly helped usher in a more pop music world. But that's just a few examples, and many folks in music-media have written much about the very question you asked. Best!

For me, it was 1980 when an Australian group called "The Monitors" released a song called "Singing in the 80s" that brought with it that signature 80s vibe. I.E.Electronic drum machine, synthesizers, and the MTV style video rather than footage of the band playing on a stage. The song asks how will music transition from the 70s to the 80s. It was considerably prophetic, and it's a great song as well. Take a look, it is so 80s you will see what I mean.

Ok, Britt. The looks of how people looked were drastically amplified with the birth of MTV, as the previous comments say. It is even a part of the first video to play on the channel by the Buggles and the hit VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR, which was the first clip played. Of course, there were exceptions here and there like Twisted Sister, Culture Club, and a few others, but television is a visual medium. It took the direction of fan magazines and the teen girls to hand select to sell and promote music and looks of those artists. It was harkening back to a time on the 196o's when the Baby Boomers were the audience for the British Invasion. The record companies and television executives all wanted a second bite of the apple. I remember hearing a few songs on the radio that didn't really catch on until the video appeared on MTV. And then the inverse happened. MTV was playing music that found its way onto radio playlists. It was fun, colorful, and addicting. You add the fashion and the hair to mix and you can see the early feminization of men in modern times. For a few hours every you could watch new and established artists roll out the latest video. And the next day talk to your friends about it. The wave continued into the nightclubs as the first big screen televisions would play the video while you either danced or prowled the tables for a hookup. Those were the days, Britt. They really were good. Keep going and enjoy the music.

For further proof, listen to the song SYLVIA'S MOTHER from Dr. Hook and the Medince Show in the early 7o's and compare that to this song and SEXY EYES which was also in this time frame of the late 7o's. And yes Britt. It's true. React to BACK STABBERS by the O'Jays.
