Yes, that is his voice. His name is Mitch Grassi a counter tenor, and you've just been what we Pentaholics refer to as "Mitch-slapped". Just an FYI when you listen to Pentatonix you really need to use headphones to be able to catch all the details and full effect from the beatboxing to the incredible bass work of Avi 2011-2017 and Matt 2017-present (only member change). Scott Hoying the first singer is a baritone with in insane range and covers the bass parts when Avi or Matt are singing Lead. Kirstin, or Kirstie, is a mezzo soprano. Her, Scott, and Mitch grew up together in Arlington TX and have known each other since chidhood. Avi Kaplan (bass) and Kevin Olusola (tenor, beatboxer, cellist) were added just prior to their audition and winning run on 'The Sing Off' to meet the five person minimum. Kevin is a musical savant and arguably the most talented member of the group. Besides his beatboxing skills, he is a world-class cellist and has an impressive tenor voice.

Hi Britt! Great reaction, and welcome to the rabbit hole that is Pentatonics (aka. PTX). Warning!!! You are starting on a journey that can become an addiction. You should find that we Pentaholics (PTX fans) will practically blow up your channel waiting for our next fix of sharing PTX with you. PTX are 3 time Grammy winners and have many Christmas albums. Yes, headphones, or earbuds, are highly recommended. Not even good speakers catch all of the effects you will discover in their arrangements. Btw, there is an abundance of live performances to choose from, as well. Also, they just recently performed "The Star Spangled Banner" at the College Football Championship game. It is an ESPN production, and it was stunning. It's all over KZbin and other platforms. Hope to see more PTX reactions!

@@Badger77722 What constitutes "decent" earbuds? Once, I tried to look up and compare the performance specs for expensive earbuds with the specs for a good set of cans...but could never find specs for any of the earbud products. Mostly, I see reactors who are in the music business using over-the-ear headphones. Indirectly, that tells me they're superior to earbuds...but I'd love to find some specs and learn what high-end earbuds are capable of delivering.

@@rcinsley I don't use earbuds (they bother my ears), but I assumed that the specs were readily available if you did the research. I know I've seen some musical coach/singers using them (Fairy Voice Mother comes to mind). If that's not the case, then headphones with good low range response - at least down to 20 Hz, lower if you can find and afford them. IMO, over-ear headphones will always give better sound, because they do a lot more to isolate your ears from ambient noise than earbuds, but some people have the same problem with them that I have with earbuds - they bother them.

If she wants to hear Mitch shine, Bohemian Rhapsody or the Prayer are my suggestions. If she's looking to hear Kirstie belt up a storm, she could pick almost any song they do. If she wants to hear Kevin sing out front, Bohemian Rhapsody and Imagine are probably good, or even Twelve Days of Christmas. If she wants to hear Matt stretch his entire range Sound of Silence is probably best. Avi gets down toward hitting basso profundo in this one, so it and Bohemian Rhapsody and Imagine are probably best for him. For Scott, my personal favorites are the Prayer and Sound of Silence. As a group, I haven't heard an average output, let alone a stinker, yet. Just my personal opinions and suggestions.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty")Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed next year. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Imagine how good that would have sounded with earphones. 🙂 They do use instruments on occasion but you will see them if you do. Kevin can play the cello and beatbox at the same time. Avi, the second singer, left the group on good terms and was replaced by Matt. Everyone else has stayed. After taking time off and his mother getting through cancer treatment, Avi started performing again, mostly his own music. He does use instruments and went back to more folk. I think he is still involved in an acapella academy he and Scott helped set up. Home Free is very good also. They won a singing show the year after PTX did. (The show is how the five came together, Scott wanted to be on it but needed 5 people so they found Avi and Kevin and all met the day before they auditioned.) Both groups sing some of the same songs, mostly some Christmas ones, but Home Free does more of a country sound.

This was a wonderful reaction. All of the previous comments are correct and full of wonderful information. The song that they did on sesame street was the counting song. This is a magical group of people. (In either form) They are all super talented as well as real. They had a concert at the Hollywood Bowl the end of October. 20 days before, 4 of the 5 members ( Kirstie just had a baby girl and was taking care of her) actually worked the ticket box office for 4 hours. I talked to someone who was there. They milled around the crowd and sang a few songs. How many multi platinum selling artists would take the time to do something like that. I believe that it's because, they built their fan base from KZbin videos. So, they are very connected with their fans. February 5th, we will all find out if they get their 4th Grammy (Matt's 1st) and on the 20th they receive their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I also, totally agree that earphones really help to better appreciate the complexity of what goes on in the background as the leads sing. They have a HUGE catalog of videos throughout the 11 years. Ranging from early "couch videos" Bohemian Rhapsody is an example, to stunning ones like Amazing Grace and the Prayer. I'm sure that you can see already, pentaholics are a warm and embracing group. A genuine reaction wins us over every time. We are here to help guide you along your journey. A huge part of the joy with this group, is sharing the magic with others. I could go on and on. My best advice is, if you know the song is a cover and don't necessarily know the original, react to the original YHEN listen to PTXs cover or "UPGRADE" as their covers are called by Pentaholics. Depends on what you mean by "instrument", ever since Kevin got that drum kit installed in his throat. 😂 No, but for real, that is totally voices with polymath Kevin Olusola not only doing vocal percussion, but managing 2 types of body percussion at the same time. He's unreal.

Yes, as per other comments: Please check out *Home Free* as well. They are a country (but so much more) rooted a capella group.

They are the a capella group without a single instrument. Maybe check out the song Man of Constant Sorrow from an another a capella group, Home Free.
@ScalexCzech Жыл бұрын
More specifically - the vast majority of their songs are purely a capella, but occasionally Kevin (the beatboxer) brings out his cello called Beyoncé, or they have a guest (e.g. Lindey Stirling on violin).

And their new Christmas album is chock-a-block full of incredible instruments. However, they've been very open about their foray into using instruments for this album.

Yes, and when they sing this live they sound even better. There's a video out there with them singing this in front of a live audience, I think it's done at Christmas time. They have so much great music to enjoy, the covers they do and their own original music is simply Awesome!

This is acapella. Most of their stuff is, but Kevin (the beat-boxer and occasional high tenor also plays the cello on a few videos. BTW - HOME FREE is also acapella. People fight over who is the best. To me, they both are the best and I am proud to be a PENTAFRY! :) Be well, Duke

Britt, you are THE antithesis of the peeps I subscribe to. You're open, and you notice things. There was one girl who noticed something that I noticed in then end humming portion. Either Matt or Christie branched off, and it sounded like a violin or another string instrument....was amazing.

Headphones or quality earbuds when listening to them. I can't stress it enough. It makes a HUGE difference and gives you more appreciation for what they do with just voices and beatboxing.
@patriciaalvareztostado8170 Жыл бұрын
They are all great singers, but when they come together is an other level, and you point very well that you could hear everyone of them but at the same time you hear the blend of their voices, is perfect, they have so many songs, the best acapella group and the most famous, 3 time Grammy awards and they could win another this year for their album The Evergreen! Hope you continue with this rabbit hole, I know Christmas just past but they have a lot of Christmas songs, and they do Covers and original music, and all are great

Pentatonix on Sesame Street was also my introduction to them, watching with my grandkids…they sang a song about counting to five. They also sang the Rubber Duckie song as I recall, might have been on a different episode. As others have said, headphones (or at least earbuds) really will allow you to hear the bass singer and beatboxer much better.
@heinleinreader Жыл бұрын
I agree with you totally that they never overpower the overall sound or the lead, but you can still clearly hear every single voice separately. I have a bit of imagery that I have come to use when speaking about a capella in general, but about Pentatonix specifically. I say simply that they stay beautifully in their own lanes, and that allows the vocal traffic to move much more efficiently and smoothly.

Great reaction to this beautiful version of this Leonard Cohen song. Two more versions of "Hallelujah" you must react to one day are the original by Cohen (best live) and the version by kd lang, also live! In regards to more music from Pentatonix just take your pick, every song I have ever heard from them is awesome!!

This is one heck of a rabbit hole to go down. I'd suggest your next Pentatonix video be "The Prayer". You'll be blown away. Two other powerhouse acapella groups that also have multiple video rabbit holes to go down are Home Free, and Voiceplay. To start with, for Home Free, I'd suggest their cover of Boys II Men's "End of the Road". For Voiceplay, I'd suggest their cover of "The Dragonborn Comes Skyrim".

You mentioned the lyric "broken" used several times, and their final position next to a crack in the ground. Here's another lyric "coincidence" to think about: 03:12 When Avi (2nd solo, beard and beanie) sings the line "Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya", the editing put that line up against a closeup of Kirstin's face. Hers is the only face besides Avi shown in closeup during that line.

🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 When you are listening to Pentatonix it is a must to have headphones. You spoke of hearing each voice individually when they are singing it as a group well you are completely missing half of their sounds that they can make.. when you get headphones go back and listen to this song and you will see exactly how many layers they produce when they are singing. Shortly before she passed Leonard cone the gentleman who wrote the song Heard Pentatonix cover. He said it was the best cover of his song he had ever heard

Hola Britt...I was watching this one again and when you mentioned hearing each individual voice but them still blending as one it made me remember growing up as part of the church/school choir. I went to a Catholic school and the Cathedral was a big, beautiful gothic style church. The loft was in the very back and up high with a huge pipe organ. The way the sounds echoed back and forth was amazing and somehow uplifting...but that grand organ was just as you explained! We sang hymns in Latin with 6- or 8-part harmonies and when that organ hit 8-part cords you could hear (and literally feel the vibration) from every note and how it blended at the same time! Gorgeous to catch that...and of course, when taIking about Pentatonix over the last 6 or 7 years I have compared my listening experience with them to that organ! Great insight!!!

Im very new here but so far you are hitting all my faves Harry mack and pentatonix. I have been a petatonix fan since they were on sing off competing for a contract. I hate that Avi (bass) left but i like some of his solo stuff. Everyone in pentatonix is a powerhouse all on their own tho. Mitch has the vocal chords of an angel. Mary did you know is another amazing song from them. Little drummer boy is another one. Now you need to look at Connor price and Tom macdonald and im in heaven. They are all badass in their own lanes. Keep them coming. I love everything ive seen you do.

They have 200 songs to check out! I suggest The Prayer, Sing, Popspring 2016 Live, La La Latch, the entire “Evolution Of….” Series, Daft Punk, Havana, Can’t Sleep Love, Sing, Can’t Hold Us, Sound of Silence, Gold, and so many Christmas songs. I love their rendition of O Come All Ye Faithful and Carol of the Bells. But you honestly can’t go wrong with anything you choose. I mean it. Every piece they do is an upgrade.

I loved your reaction and can tell that you’re new to Pentatonix, so I just subscribed. I am a Pentaholic and I loved watching your first Mitch slap.
