In the 1980s, Cilla became the host of the hit dating show BLIND DATE in the UK. Her special mix of authenticity, quick wit and gossipy banter made her everyone's favourite TV "Auntie" at the time and one of the highest paid entertainers working in British television 💐

She was a Rock n Roll girl and would get up a do a number or two with the various bands that were on. When Brian Epstein became her manager, he and George Martin the recording manager, turned her into a big ballad singer, although she hated it but, she had a powerful set of pipes and they thought she'd be more successful doing ballads. "You're My World" was another hit of hers from the same year.

The song was written by Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) for Dionne Warwick in 1963. Warwick's original recording hit the Top Ten in the United States. Black's single in the UK went number one hit 1964. Petula Clark also recorded the song for the international market in several foreign languages.

Cilla Black hosted her own BBC variety show, Cilla (1968-1976).she became a prominent television presenter in the 1980s and 1990s, hosting hit entertainment shows such as Blind Date (1985-2003), Surprise Surprise (1984-2001) and The Moment of Truth (1998-2001). Black died on 1 August 2015 at the age of 72, after a fall in her holiday villa in Estepona, a town in Spain. The day after her funeral, the compilation album The Very Best of Cilla Black (2013) went to number one on the UK Albums Chart and the New Zealand Albums Chart; it was her first number one album. In 2017, a statue of Black commissioned by her sons was unveiled outside the Cavern Club's original entrance.

It is a tragedy for the USA that she never really made in big here. Great voice and great personality, she became extremely big in the UK etc. Had her own variety show, game shows, etc. The Brits loved her as one of their own relatives. They did a great movie on her some 10 years ago, it's somewhere on youtube. From Liverpool, was pals with the Beatles early on before they made it big. ..she was the "coat check" girl at the Cavern Club and would be asked to sing with bands, especially the Beatles and a few others. She was actually friends with Ringo Starr before he joined the Beatles. The Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, at John Lennon's suggestion, became her manager also. The biographical movie about her was high level great!! A must watch!

"Childlike" isn't a bad descriptor here. This is young Cilla Black, at the beginning of her career, and her voice hadn't yet fully developed. She has exquisite pitch and amazing control of her vibrato. And she has 100% command of this Bacharach/David song that Dionne Warwick had previously charted in the US. But her voice is still young, maybe a bit nasal. If you want a fun comparison, go listen to Tami Terrell, both with and without Marvin Gaye. Sadly, Tami died very young, so she never had the chance to let her voice age and mature. Both women - fabulous. And able to give a heart-wrenching vocal. Listen to them side-by-side sometime. Cheers.

Is Dionne's version better than Cilla's or vice versa? To me Dionne's softer voice leads to a more passive acceptance of the situation. Whereas Cilla's harsher tones makes the lyrics much more assertive and strident. Either way Bacharach and David have two superb renditions of their classic song. BTW I have both versions in my collection 😃 Dionne must have felt persecuted in the 1960s as every US hit she had seemed to be covered by either Cilla, Dusty Springfield or Sandie Shaw who went on to have the UK hit. It meant that only "Walk On By" made the UK top ten.

Cilla Black is only NOW getting the recognition she deserves as a singer. She was a singer´s singer. Unfortunately, with a voice like that, she was "encouraged" to sing pop music. It did not do well for her career. Her nose job ended her singing career. She never sounded as good after that.
