I think Carlin accurately descibed himself in an interview where he said "They say when you scratch a cynic you'll find a disappointed idealist, and I would admit that somewhere underneath all of this there's a little flicker of a flame of idealism that would love to see it all change."

My name is George. I was born in 1955 and first saw George Carlin on TV in the mid-60s on the Jimmy Dean show. This is back in the day. 3 channels in glorious black and white. No reruns, no syndication. You missed it you missed it. From his 70s albums to the flip Wilson show and the hippy-dippy weatherman I followed him his whole life and it affected me. Peace out.

i first discovered Carlin in 89. I was a senior in high school at the time. Was hooked instantly. Found out my dad had some old vinyl records of his stuff from the 70s. From that point, I obsessively watched all his specials, bought both of his books, and then the autobiography. He always made me think, he changed the way I look and analyze things, and I learned alot of my logic as I grew into adulthood based on his "comedy". I never use "pre-heat" for instance - that's one I totally get and understand. I question things alot and I attribute that to Carlin's witticisms.

George late cancelled a concert in St. Paul, Minnesota in about January, 1970. Walked in the bitter cold. Later, on a spring brake trip to Florida, somewhere in Tennessee, at 3 AM, we heard a very goofy weather report. The Hippy-Dippy Weatherman.

I am GLAD you found the FULL routine, because some of the videos for this have been split into 2 different videos, where you only see the part where he is talking about the safety lecture and usually ends with him talking about floating in the ocean holding a seat full of bear farts. They leave off the part about landing and the terminal. I LOVE this one it is my FAVORITE routine of his. My cousin was an airline pilot his entire career and he married a stewardess. So I WISH they had heard this routine, I KNOW my cousin would have gotten a kick out of it, he had a GREAT sense of humor.

My mom was a flight attendant for Piedmont Airlines for fifteen years or so. Never had an emergency landing, but close a few times. There's some wild ass stories, like where there was a drunk marine who had pinned a flight attendant in a room and was threatening her. Flight crew were all small females, pilots said and I quote, "the cabin is your problem". Ironically, and this isn't a joke, Hulk Hogan, the wrestler, was on the plane. My mom approached him and asked for assistance, and he went up behind the marine and screamed at him, forcefully moved him back to his seat and told him if he so much as breathed wrong he was going to "put him so deep into that chair they'd have to remove the fucking rivets to get your ass out". Worked, too rofl

My dad was in a plane where the engine blew up at 30.000 feet. It was one of the smaller jets with two engines at the back of the plane. They heard an explosion, and then the plane dropped sideways. Apparently this is what the pilot is trained to do in case of an emergency, so you get down quick to where there is breathable air if you loose cabin pressure. But from the passenger's side it seemed like they were going to smash into the ground. They had a safe emergency landing on an airfield, and when they exited the plane one of the engines was just gone.

He really was a master linguist. He examined every detail of our language and pointed out all the bs. And he’s right. Our perception of ourselves, each other and the reality we live in is all shaped by the language we use to interpret it. Some of these things are a little silly of course. Like preheating and oven doesn’t really mean the state of it being on or off; it’s meant as an advisement to turn the oven on before you start prepping your food, so it’s heated to the right temp by the time you finish prepping. In that context it makes sense. But most of his examples were spot on, just unnecessary fluff words. And you were right, a lot of it was created for liability. So many businesses use unnecessary language cause they have to be vague and specific all at once to encompass any situation they could be liable for. It’s obnoxious and annoying, but if they don’t they’ll get sued because some people are just idiots. Part of it is also to avoid people panicking. Obviously they have to warn us about what to do if there’s an emergency during the flight. But they know if they start with “in the event of a crash into the ocean” you in know some passengers would start freaking out immediately. As a society we can only move as fast as our slowest person, and unfortunately that (along with other stuff) has lead to this bs language. I just wish George was still here to discuss our new language. I can only imagine what he’d say about “yeet” and “sheeeeesh”. 😂

@@lindanicholson950 Wow. I'm not the only grammar Nazi. What made you choose that grammatical error and not the ones such as the word "in" being erroneously placed between "you" and "know" in the third to last line? George Carlin was a national treasure. I didn't think he needed to use the foul language, but that was him being him. With that said, he had a routine on his Class Clown album (on vinyl!) called The Seven Deadly Words You Can't Use on TV. Hilarious! Sadly, I can't think of any you can't use on TV anymore. That album was a classic! Also the movie Dogma in which he played a Catholic Cardinal. Think about that for a minute. The whole idea just slays me and he was brilliant in the part. Lot's of rough language in the movie but it was funny as hell and made some legitimate philosophical points. Also, the late, great Alan Rickman played the angel Metatron. That would be a fun movie for you to react to. The main stars were Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and Linda Fiorentino. I almost forgot! Chris Rock plays the 13th apostle as well! Another hugely funny bit!

When I was young you could still smoke on planes. I distinctly remember playing with the little ashtrays in the armrest with the snap down lid. It was fun to click them open and closed....for about 4-5 clicks before I'd get yelled at for making all that noise and playing with a dirty ashtray. There was a stretch in the '80s and '90s where it seemed like very comedian had a bit about air travel, because a working comedian spends A LOT of time traveling. This one might be the best.

I was flying military (USAF) and we lost oxygen due to a door seal crack. We were about 40,000 ft and becoming sick and light-headed. On this aircraft, we had to reach under our seats for an oxygen bottle, strap on a mask, and pull a cord. Once we all regained our senses, the plane nosed-dived below 10,000 ft.

Were we on the same plane? Mine was on a C-17 going to a forward deployed location in 2014. I just remember a bang, and then i grabbed the mask and thought, damn, i don’t pay attention to the safety announcement lol. Then the plane dove to 10k feet and leveled off and we were able to take the masks off. Ours was from a door seal as well…

10/10 video! - They say that watching a person laugh can have medically good effects. - Since watching your videos here, I haven't hurt since July! :) BTW, on his bit about cabin pressure and roof flying off - This happened. A plane lost about 30 feet of its roof in flight. It was only the expertise of the pilots that got them down.

10:26 "Oh its goin' down... I would own Delta" made me smile extra hard... yes... I believe you would. Props to appreciating that Carlin LOVED words... built chapters of this standup on words and what a brain to hold 'em. Thought relentlessly about the simple systems of control right in our faces that we just accept without questioning. He's beyond "practice until mental memory is without work"... a brilliant man who loved vocab and poked at all of our soft spots and some we didn't realize where we were soft and, I do believe, genuinely cared for people in general... he just wished we lived better lives individually and within the systems and opened our eyes and ears more.

"Why would we name it a terminal?" Because the word 'terminal' means that it's a thing placed at the end of something. A terminal illness would be an illness that ends your life, and a computer terminal is the end access point into a place. An airport terminal is the end point for getting on and off the airplane.

My stepfather was a inspector for purchases from Boeing planes to a major airlines. A couple of times the plane had a total failure and they were headed down, luckily the pilot was able to get the plane back and they landed safely. However, no I’ve never myself had a horrible near crash experience. I’ve had turbulence where many people got sick, that was a gross smelling flight.

On a flight from Albany to Newark in a 30 seater where you can see right out the front. When we came in for a landing, we were about 100-200 feet from the ground and got hit by wind sheer. Our plane was going towards the runway,......sideways! Our pilots were even yelling, "whoa whoa, holy sh%t". Just feet from the tarmac, our plane straightened and hit the runway for a safe landing, where the entire plane gave an audible sigh of relief. The pilot then turned to us and said "Whew, that was close".

I used to travel every day. In all the fights there was one flight when a landing gear didn't come down. They went through crash position. It was a long couple of hours to burn off fuel. We landed and the pilot did so great. It was tense but there were no injuries.
