I think Hornby should be congratulated on producing this model as the prototype only existed in this form for such as small time, as you have pointed out. So I suspect it will have a limited market, unless you model the ECML, Scottish section where they spend a fair amount of their short time, but huge appeal all the same, splendid!

I'm sure this can pull even more. I have a smokey Joe on my outdoor railway and because of the very well used slightly corroded but not rusty wheels it can pull 10 full size coaches that live outside on a permanent basis non of these are gliders as they have covered thousands of KM in their time.

Very impressive demonstration and a good quality review. The valve gear looks esquisite. The problem with RTR plastic steam locomotives is that they look like plastic, especially in LNER Green. To my eyes, the DJH Pacific looked more realistic.

Works very well on this super high standard trackwork. Such a high standard that even Tony Wright had someone much more skilled at trackwork construct the track. The average buyer using Hornby set track tight curves and points might not get such good results.

Sad that the P2 did not survive irl but even in model form it shows the power of a mikado but as a passenger engine. The p2 had a chance if it was made so the pilot and trailing can pivot and had freight drivers. She would be the strongest locomotive to be in both freight and passenger even when most mikados would be replaced by Berkshire and northerns, p2s would still be around.

Did Mr. Thompson have any choice about rebuilding the P2s, given there was a war taking place at the time? Granted the conversion could have been done better, but I sense there was something inevitable about it. The P2 loco looks "A1" in model form.
@charlesbright92339 жыл бұрын
***** From what I have read in an interview he gave to O.S. Nock, I think the term "hatred of Gresley designs" is an exaggeration. It was, after all, Gresley designed components that he used in his scheme of standardisation: eg B17 boiler for the B1. He also called in an outside and independent judge to inspect the conjugated valve gear used on 3 cylinder locos.

@w003394410 жыл бұрын
Actual;y, the LNER used Cartazzi types, which were fixed (the axle swung, but the outside frames were fixed), so it's much more accurate than a swinging type for this loco.
@keithbacon127610 жыл бұрын
LateNeverEarlyR As pointed out to me fine for the LNER loco that were built like that but the decent models that had proper trailing bogies like the Princess and Duchess it sure looks much better.

I used to have Hornby (Hornby-Dublo) when I was a youngster, many moons ago! I never remember them having the strangely flat paint appearance of the new ones today. To me every new Hornby has a strange paint job and not as realistic as the older ones. No doubt they operate well and many people like them. The other locomotive, the Pacific, looks a lot better, but is not as powerful.
