I have had the ZH304 plus the Skeet barrels since the early 1980's. Mine is topped with a fixed 6x scope, heavy reticle. Took my first European boar with the 7x57R. Hunted with the ZH for many years in Europe and on the U.S. east coast. With me again overseas. The 7x57R can be reloaded using standard 7x57 dies with zero issues. Great combo firearm and totally suited to Europe or Stateside hunting where you can legally hunt with shotgun and rifle.

Great European gun, it is a lot of used in Balkan teritory, I mean Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia.. All models from Brno are very popular in my country, ZH 304 is one of the most popular combination guns. It is chambered in 12 gauge and 7x57R. Of course someone has this gun in 16 gauge and 7x57R, there is also few guns in 7x65R or 8x57IRS, but you can't find this calibers so easy. Of course 7x57R is the weakest caliber in this group, but it worked very well for years even on the biggest game here, like wild boars or bears... Nice video by the way, and thank you for this...

Good show USOG. Brno (CZ) makes and made as you can see great firearms. The 205 is a bit bulky/unwieldy but very affordable and good quality. It will never break, the perfect survival Gun. Combination weapons are very common here in Sweden. Common brands are Finnish Valmet and Tikka. Angelo Zoli and Merkel are also common brands. Mine is very light because of the alloy action, has the German "stecher" trigger and EAW quick mount for a Leupold VXIII 1,25-5 magnification. This is the rifle i always carry for hunting birds, hare, fox, badger, and roe deer. The Krighoff and my Varberger .308win are the last guns i'll ever sell. Thanks for showing. Cheers!

Thank you for amazing content! I live in Greenland and I am from Canada. Gun culture here is insane, you can buy a rifle in a GROCERY STORE and you don’t even get them registered (unless it’s a semi-auto which requires a special license) it’s funny that the rifles hang on the wall they are not even locked on the wall you can take it off the wall and look at it and craziest thing is that all the ammo is on shelves right beside the guns (the guns have bolts in them) and you can put ammo in your shopping cart. Just thought I’d share. Have a good one😁

22 Savage High power is basically a 30/30 necked down to .228. 75 gr bullets and I believe a one in 9 twist was required to stabilize it. Fast twist for heavy bullets in a 110-year-old caliber. Who knew? LOL!
@michaelguerin56
@michaelguerin56 2 ай бұрын
Original U.S. ammunition uses a 70 grain semi-pointed bullet, according to my understanding. I believe that the European rifles use a 1-10” twist or something very close to that. The Hornady 70 grain spitzer bullet was designed for the faster twist barrels and should be ideal for this gun. If memory serves me correctly, there is/was a 70 grain semi-pointed .224” Speer bullet which has been used successfully in original Savage rifles.

Hi mate. I have owned a ZH304 since the 80's and it has always been a versatile performer for me in the bush in Australia. It is a 12g/243 combo, and I use it for pigs, goats and other ferals. I also always carry slugs and also 4/7 shot in case I want some pigeon pie for the camp pot. I also got a over under 12g barrel set when I bought the gun as a bonus. Your relaxed style is very Aussie-like. Keep up the good work.

I was looking at those, but I wasn’t too keen on the calibres they came in. I recently bought one of those Swedish Mausers that were converted to 9.3x57 from a little company here in Quebec. It’s in really beautiful condition, and the stock is a sporterized stock, but really wonderfully done. I paid $235!!! I want to get a Brno one day, but I just bought a modern gun, and work is slow for now, so I’ll have to wait. A couple years ago I got an Italian made Husqvarna OU 12g for $450. It’s a real gem. The 9.3x57 chambered Mausers were produced by Husqvarna utilizing the Mauser 96 action copied from what was used by the Swedish military (manufactured by Carl Gustav or Husqvarna). They were manufactured from the 1930s into about the mid-1940s, with some later models in 9.3x57 utilizing Mauser 98 actions.

Another great video on another great series of guns! I think we are brothers from another mother! I have a ZH 202 Skeet gun with built in compensators. I bought it in the Czech Republic in 2005 when I was working in eastern Europe and the gun shop handled the importation for me. While overseas I also bought a BRNO O/U rifle in 9.3x74R and an Opava Ferdinand 16 ga. SxS . I got them for prices no one would believe. Even after import and shipping costs. Absolute bargains! Quality is great! Though I would not call the finish on the CZ 202 as refined as some others, the action lockup is incredible! The unique takedown allows for extra barrel sets to be easily interchanged (they are truly interchangeable barrels sets) and were available in different chokes and lengths. No doubt your combo barrels would fit on my frame also. I bought mine with only one set of barrels as I intended it for skeet shooting and it excels for that. Some other interesting info on these guns: "ZH" stands for "Zbrojovka Holek". Holek is the name of three brothers who were, essentially, the "John Brownings" of Czechoslovakia. They designed, among others, the ZB 26 machinegun that the British would adopt as the "BREN". The double triggers on my gun are what are called "Double Single Triggers" Pulling the front trigger fires the under barrel first, a second pull of the front trigger fires the upper barrel. If you pull the rear trigger first, the upper barrel fires first and a second pull fires the under barrel. Perhaps the combo model works the same? Try it. The triggers are the selectors! BE AWARE, BRNO did not use an "inertia block" in the trigger mechanism. The result? If you fire it off your shoulder (unsupported) it will "double" every time. It is actually "bump firing". The inertia block on most doubles and O/Us prevents this. If you fire it from your shoulder, as is normal, it is not a problem. Hold it unsupported down at your hip, and you will get a "ba-boom" and both barrels will be fired. The .22 Savage High Power is a good cartridge, way ahead of its time. Designed by Charles Newton in 1912. It is essentially a .25-35 WCF necked down. The biggest issue is that the cartridge uses a .228" diameter bullet, rather than the standard .224". Winchester made the .219 Zipper in 1937, which is similar but made for .224" bullets. The .22 Savage High Power was intended for deer sized game, and was offered in 70-90 grain bullets. It just never caught on in the USA but was more popular in Europe. Americans, in 1912, weren't accepting .22 centerfires as deer rifles and the Model 99 never had the accuracy needed for varmint hunting. You can find the BRNO ZH models on auction sites and usually go for a reasonable price. They are definitely overlooked gems.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I see your combo gun has two triggers, so I assume they work the same. In theory, they wouldn't have to for a combination gun, but since the frames are made to accept interchangeable barrel sets, I bet they do. BRNO ZH guns were not the only ones to use "double single triggers", but they are fairly rare, especially in O/U guns. Try it next time you are out. Most likely the front trigger fires the shotgun (under) barrel first, a second pull of the front trigger will fire the rifle (over) barrel. You may also find that your gun would not "double" if you fire the rifle barrel first. The .22 Savage High Power may not generate enough recoil to cause it to happen.

It’s a shame your gun wasn’t chambered in a less obscure cartridge like a 25-35. Nevertheless, if the price was right, I’d be delighted to own it. Good to see a shooting channel that features classic hunting rifles instead of one more variation of the countless varieties of AR15s. The Czech’s are such imaginative innovators and fine craftsmen that fine gun making must be part of their DNA.

Some of the Tikka combination guns were chambered in 12ga and 25-35, though I think the metric designation is 6.5x50R or something like that, which can easily be confused with the 5.6x50R which is metric for 22HP. If I see one in good condition, it would be hard to pass, as the 25-35 would at least make it a good choice for White-tailed Deer and better suited to North America.

@@UnitedStatesOfGunsyou are not entirely wrong, most of it is just ignorance as .223/5.56 is the only cartridge many people are familiar with whether they spent time in the military or not. .223/5.56 is adequate for most deer, but is the smallest “.22” cartridge I would use for deer. I have a sweet little h&r handi rifle in .223 that is a great deer rifle. But I would almost always go bigger just in case a larger buck decides to swing by. I am a lazy hunter due to having a bad back and knees. I don’t like chasing deer, so I prefer to put them down on the spot rather than give them a chance to run.

Some additional information on operating those BRNO ZH guns, because you didn't mention it in the video: - The front trigger can also be used as a set trigger, just push it forward and you get a very light trigger pull. - The rear trigger is a double trigger, if you shoot the lower barrel first and pull the rear trigger a second time it fires the top barrel. And they are quite heavy compared to other combination guns. I have one of those in 7x57R/16ga and an additional pair of 16ga shotgun barrels and I use them as beater guns for hunting. Combination guns lost rapidely in popularity here in Germany since supressors were legalized for hunters. That's why a lot of cheaper combination guns get exported to the US where they can be sold at a higher price.

I scoped them but have gone back to open sights for handiness. As far as the 22 High Power on deer... In Nunavut I shot a lot of caribou with 223 and 22-250. They work very well and the high power with a heavier bullet would do so as well (I am sure).

Hello - I use steel shot in mine - no issues. I agree about the scope - the iron sights are much simpler and natural in that gun.

I think Fox bullets also make .228 bullets for itm Rhino for sure makes them, Norma also ammo . Odd to think the .5,6*52R was used on Tigers also. Many in drillings to find also, good prices since they are roe deer aized game max legal .

Man I wish they would bring roe deer to the states so we would have a deer to hunt in the summer outside of the very limited range of free ange axis deer (basically only Texas, as Florida refuses to release any).

@@Steve-ev6vx And Axis is better suited for 7mm like 7x57 . Question would be if the biology of them would be suited for the us . But Turkey and other big birds also its excellent on also.

@@MrPh30 there are substantial free range herds of Axis deer in Texas. Both in the Hill Country and in South Texas. I harvested a 24" main beam 3x3 Axis with a .30-06. Dropped in its tracks, tried to get up, and went back down with follow up shot. We also have them on high fenced ranches in Florida, but no free range. There are free range sika deer in Texas, Maryland and Virginia. Maryland and Virginia have pure Japanese Sika. There are also free range Sambar in California and on St. Vincents Island in Florida, which is open to the public for hunting but requires drawing a quota hunt permit.

@@Steve-ev6vx That sounds good , here it’s mostly roe deer , moose , reindeer , red deer in some areas . But 6,5x55 is minimum for them anyway . .25-35 Wcf , on same case is perhaps the better of them for break actions and levers .

That would be fantastic - although the powers that be don't like tampering with the natural environment. Wild boar/hogs are great game but maybe not the best. I'm not sure. Thanks for the post/idea.

The 22 hi power is a good deer rifle the idea would deer loading wouls be a 000 buckshot in the bottom barrel for jumped deer and the 22 high power for the longer standing shots. it would be great for black bear in the 7x 57 and 12 gage.

USOG --> hello. Looks good and functional. I like the concept of combo guns. I would like to own one someday. I looked at 3 websites here in the States, and they had no .22 Savage Hi-Power ammo. One site mentioned Sellier & Bellot, but said: "Out of stock, no reorder". If we were to buy one of the BRNO guns in that chambering, it seems we would have to go the handloading route using 25-35 Winchester brass then neck it down to .228 caliber with a sizing die and put some .227 caliber Hornady spire point bullets in them over some IMR-3031 powder. Savage (Mr. Newton) used a .227/.228 caliber bullet, but almost all .22 caliber rifles for 60+ years have been using .224 caliber bullets.

Hey Mike, it’s me again. Another fine educational and entertaining video. To me that gun has somewhat the same look as the Valmet O/U shotguns that were sold under the Savage name back in the 1970’s. I think it was the model 330. I’ve always had a Savage 99 in 22 HP on my dream want list but the prices have just been too high and I have things I want more. Can that combo gun be bought for less $ than what I see the Savage 99’s listed for? Where I live we can hunt deer with any legal to own center fire rifle. I don’t necessarily agree with it but I do know people hunting deer with both 223 Remington and 22-250 with success but I don’t think they’re shooting at very long distances. I do think that combination gun would be great for coyote hunting. The 22 HP out to 250 yards or so and the shotgun with heavy loads (lead #2, BB or larger) for when you can call them in close.

Hello - The combination guns seem to be refugees from European gun laws and are being sold inexpensively for now. You could buy one - good idea. The .22 Savage HP is far better than the 55 grain .22 centerfires. IMHO

@chriscunnane7596 --- Hello. Not a good idea, and actually a waste of money. Why? Because the .22 Savage Hi-Power cartridge uses a .227/.228 caliber bullet. Almost all modern rifle barrels for 60+ years in .22 caliber are size .224 caliber. So, it would be kinda like putting a size 10 foot in a size 9-1/2 size boot/shoe. {I hope that makes sense...?) I just did some web searching after watching the video, and about the only brand I could find is "Sellier & Bellot" (from Europe) but it seems that they are not in stock in the three ammunition websites (based in the U.S.A.). It has been an "obsolete" cartridge in the U.S.A. for 40+ years. If you have a reloading press you can use the 25-35 Winchester brass case, necked down to .227 size (with a sizing die) and get some Hornady brand spire point .227 caliber bullets and some IMR-3031 powder and Federal primers and brew up your own loads.
