When you're trying to decide which member of a comedy duo is which, just watch for a short time to determine which one is the straight man. The straight man sets up all the jokes, the comic gets the laughs it's an old tradition in show business that the straight man's name is lisred first, as in this case Abbott and Costello. Laurel and Hardy. Burns and Allen. Rowan and Martin.

Lou Costello, the small one, was a wonderful man. He built a youth center for underprivileged kids in LA and funded other charities as well. He unfortunately died too early in my opinion. They were experts at this type of humor. Don't need the alcohol to enjoy it....and you notice not a single 4 letter word or sex joke in the whole routine. It is just funny. Not just written well, but the timing of the routine is so perfect. This is real talent.

You are not wrong, but it is also true that About was performing variants of it for years before teaming up with Costello, and that many different skits with the same premise had been performed in burlesque theater for decades before that.
@joconnell8145
@joconnell8145 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting trivia: This bit was NEVER rehearsed and it was NEVER performed the same way twice. They wrote a basic premise and just improvised on top of that premise. Contrary to what several people have said Abbott & Costello were not inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame, but this bit is played on loop throughout the Hall for people to hear. ALSO... don't know if ANYONE else mentioned it but Bud Abbott is the tall one and Lou Costello is the short one. A brief synopsis...Abbott is EXPLAINING the team and what positions they play, there aren't any base runners. Costello is the confused one, asking the team members names. It's all a clever play on words.
@don1965don
@don1965don 3 жыл бұрын
Your right "Abbott & Costello were not inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame". But they presented to the Baseball hall of fame a copy of the routine. From the baseball(dot)org website: "We just finished a picture about eight weeks ago, ‘Dance with Me, Henry,’ for United Artists,” said Costello, clutching a mounted gold record of “Who’s on First?” “And now we’re here in New York, being with you and all the wonderful people you have here, we have a wonderful plaque that’s going to be presented to the Baseball Hall of Fame." “That’s a solid gold record that actually plays and will go to the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.” Abbott added, “And we’re very, very proud and happy that you’ve accepted this.” Speaking for the Hall of Fame, Kerr said, “Lou and Bud, I’m very happy to accept this on behalf of the millions who have seen and heard this. And I’m especially glad to have it so that the future generations may enjoy this as much as we have.”

Bud Abbot (the tall straight-man) and Lou Costello (the "dope"), were vaudeville performers who got onto radio and tv and also worked in some movies. They worked in about the same era as the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges. Abbot & Costello got together in 1931 when Bud filled in for Lou's straight-man; they clicked and put together an act. Their first movie together was "One Night in the Tropics" in 1940. It was Bud Abbott's first movie and Lou Costello's eighth. This is probably the most iconic comedy routine in the history of vaudeville.

I always liked "The Time of Their Lives" because it was the one movie where Costello finally gets to tease and beat up on Abbott, albeit as a ghost, but still it was nice to see Lou get some swipes in on ole' Bud.

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello made a whole bunch of movies in the 1940s and 1950s. They were very popular, and their vaudeville acts were notoriously funny. My favorites of their films are "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein" and "Abbott and Costello in The Time of their Lives." In the Frankenstein movie, you also get to meet Bella Lugosi as Count Dracula and Lon Chaney, Jr as the Wolfman. Sometimes they would have other famous acts of the time in their films such as The Andrew Sisters. I used to watch many of their films on TV when I was a kid, and I enjoyed them all. Sadly, Lou Costello died young in 1959 at 52 years old. Bud Abbott missed his dear friend and working partner Lou, in which he ended his acting career because of Lou's death. Budd Abbott died in 1974 at age 76. They were the best comic duo, and no one has ever come close to their line of comedy. RIP Bud and Lou. You made millions laugh with your timeless comedy. Thank you for all what you two did.

Carol Burnett said that Tim started that story in rehearsal and it cracked everyone up. He did it twice during rehearsals. Carol made him promise not to do it on the show. He lied. In fact, he added more to it on the show. Then, Vicki Lawrence put icing on the cake when she asked if that "a**hole was finished."

It's brilliant cause i was 2 when this filmed in 1963. Over the years I'm 70 now, it never gets old. They're like me a 5 yr old version of Lou Abbott frustratingly arguing with my straight man 15 yr old brother, teasing me. It still cracks me up the way they cross signals, on and on!

What kills me is that everyone thinks the stuff from the past was so great. This is great but the people of the past where normal, there will be always some body that will stand out . They had movies, radio, and reading.They comunicated. we met at bars and clubs . I have seen great stuff on You tube that people will say 30 years from now the people had higher attention spans back then. I saw a 9 year old opera singer. You got kids doing Comedy bits now. Agreed. Anybody who can be loud, pretend to not understand things, and has good timing can be a good funnyman. It takes special talent to be the one who sets the pace and PROVIDES the timing, and never break character or laugh while the funnyman is being zany. Lou Costello’s talent as a funnyman demanded a quality straightman. Bud Abbott rose to the occasion every single time.

Abbott and Costello used to be on on Sunday mornings when I was a kid. My mom actually let me watch them every Sunday and immediately after we were in a rush to get out the door for church! Was one of my favorite parts of the weekend growing up! And that night we had dinner with the family…….my grandparents when they were around, or my cousins. Saturdays may have had cartoons……but there was lots of cleaning and homework……..Sunday’s were for relaxing and having fun……and Abbott and Costello kicked it off

IN COMEDY TEAMS, NORMALLY THE FIRST NAME IS THE STRAIGHT GUY AND THE SECOND NAME IS THE FUNNY ONE. THINK ROWAN AND MARTIN, MARTIN AND LEWIS, GEAORGE BURNS AND GRACY ALLEN. ABBOTT IS THE TALL ONE AND COSTELLO IS THE SHORT ONE. I REALLY WISH YOU WOULD LET THE CLIP PLAY WITHOUT SO MANY INTERRUPTIONS. YOU KILL THE EFFECT AT JUST THE WRONG TIME.
