Stevie Ray was already playing in garage bands when he was 12 years old. At schools and picnics. A local recording studio would sometimes use him as a studio session guitarist. By the time Stevie Ray got to high school, he was already playing full on gigs at local clubs and bars in Dallas. Stevie Ray flunked musical theory because he couldn't stay awake in class. 😊✌💙

You are absolutely correct patron40silver! I loved SRV from the start...I too was a guitarist in local bands and I'm just one year older then SRV. BUT WHEN I FIRST heard him play, my jaw hit the ground! I saw him in concert in Daytona Bch, Fl, back around 1985? He was even BETTER than I had thought when I saw him play up close...took the wind out of MY sails! lol! I pretty much gave up guitar at that point - I knew guitar greatness was not in my future! SRV is not human...

I saw Steve Ray Vaughn in concert in 1987 at the Great Woods Amphitheater in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Stevie broke 2 strings on the FIRST SONG. I turned to my friend, smiling, and said: "My brother, THIS is going to be an epic night!"

Stevie was a conduit connected to the source of something higher. He didn’t have to “try to play music,” it flowed through him. You could watch him improvise, and you could tell he was never trying to figure out where he was going to go next, it just happened intuitively, and it was always magical and genuine. Lots of players can play the same notes, licks, and runs on the guitar, but they’ll never match the power, passion, and intuitive perfection of SRV. A total one of a kind artist.

Seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan is a out of your body experiance...how do I know I've seen him live and he is the GOAT IMO because I've been alive for a minute or two and have seen a ton of bands live and he is phenominal in person....I consider the experiance a blessing because he passed away shortly after I saw him and was greatful I was able to witness his exstrodinary ability to be one with the guitar....the concert I went to he played with BB King and the guitars we're singing that night. In Hendrix's defense, he created music never even conceived of before. SRV became the guitarist he was BECAUSE of Hendrix. SRV became the most technically gifted performer of all time and as Eric Clapton said, "I've never seen anything or anyone like him! He doesn't play memorized riffs - he plays what he FEELS!"

Yes he did...but as SRV said before, "I only play Jimi's music and do the best with it that I can." SRV was as humble a man as you could imagine. All modern guitarists become better when they learn from the geniuses of the past...they can take that music and "improve it", but creating it is another thing all together. Just follow the "path" of rock music and guitar from the 50s to the 70s...suddenly a "light" will go off in your mind that says, "Damn! NO ONE played like Hendrix before him!"

I 1st met & got to know him in 1980, so I've seen & heard him play many times in all kinds of venues. Never dreamed when sitting there watching him that 40 yrs later, I would be sitting here watching people from around the world watching him & enjoying what they now know is the GOAT!! Just wish you guys, our friends across the pond, could have had the pleasure of seeing him live too!! And yes, guys, when SRV was in the house the house was def rockin' & you're waiting for the roof to blow off the joint at any second!! But he was a super cool, very nice, humble guy. SRV was in my opinion the best guitar player to have walked on this earth. I've seen and heard some fantastic performances but this tops everything that I have ever witnessed. What a shame to lose someone of his talent so early in his life. Who knows what he would have accomplished. I'm just glad that we have his performances recorded. Why did he fail a music class? Probably because he never learned to read music. He taught himself how to play guitar and somehow learned about chords and such but he died not knowing how to read music. Each of his performances is unique because he pretty much just free-styled to express his present feelings through his guitar.

As far as how old he looked. He did have a history of heavy drinking and some drug use that always seems to age they user. But he did clean himself up before he died and yes he would have accomplished much more.

He completely quit the cocaine, heroin, and drinking, in late 1985...he found God and changed his life. I saw his very last concert on video, on day of his death in the mountains of Troy, Wisconsin on August 27, 1990 - I'll never forget that day. That concert showed how SRV was STILL improving on guitar! If you can find the recording of that concert, check out Voodoo Child - the fastest guitar that I've EVER seen! He just kept getting better and better.

The El Mo! I lived right down the street. This downtown bar has hosted many talented musicians, like the Stones and Elvis Costello, not to mention some amazing local Canadian bands, if you were a musician in Toronto, the ultimate goal was to be on the El Mo stage! It closed in 2014 and recently opened in September with new owner and a whopping 35 million dollar renovation. Lots of good memories I have of there, being a young twenty something, with my friends, getting drunk and listening to some kick ass indie bands. This place is truly a treasure for so many!

I was fortunate to see Stevie play on numerous occasions. The first time I saw him perform Texas Flood was in a small club and my jaw dropped. I made it a point after that to see him every chance I could. Usually i had to drive 4 or 5 hours to see him but the most memorable time i saw him was (about an hours drive from my house) on the beach at South Padre Island Tx. The beach, lots of girls in bikinis, lots of beer , and lots of pot and best of all Stevie and Double Trouble jamming away.

There’s no one else; just Stevie. My brother-in-law went to high school with him; said he brought his guitar to school every day. I saw him play many times. The last time he played a blues festival in Dallas and BB King made him go last! Didn’t wanna follow him. He would sort of go into a trance, and tap into some force and let it play through him and hold on for the ride. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was like going to church on Christmas and coming out soaking wet and exhausted. Everyone.

This is from SRV live at EL Moccambo, and it is his best live performance on tape. The bassist in a book claimed that, this being back in Stevie's addiction days, they had to rouse him from a cocaine black out, where he rushed to the stage and immediately did this. That explains the sweat and all the extra notes.

You also should watch him play Look At Little Sister with Jeff Healey, another great guitarist who was completely blind!

Saw him in basically a theatre that sat 2K people. Fabulous Thunderbirds opened. Jimmy Vaughn was in that band. Stevie encored with a double neck. Stevie played the bottom and Jimmy played the top. It blew my mind.

The El Mocambo is here in my home town of Toronto, Canada. I have been so lucky to have seen so many great musical acts there ... Queen - Blondie - David Bowie - Talking Heads - B52's - Devo - Rush - The Rolling Stones ... The El Mocambo is iconic !
