Great project and video! Tip: For more realistic timber texture on the coffee stirrers, I find using a sharp (not used much) hacksaw/metal-saw blade is best as you get really fine grooves on the wood and they come up really well during washing and dry brushing. Any sharp saw blade will do as you pass over the wood multiple times but the hacksaw blade is the most readily available and finest.
@jaanikaapa69254 жыл бұрын
Very nice board, but in the future use 90 degree turns. This is because it will block/hinder the shockwaves from blasts.. Your trench would now direct the wave straight to two different areas.. command post and an ammo dump. :)

Build up the sides of the trenches with sandbags, maybe? Interior wall sandbag, exterior face is exterior dirt that looks a bit more dug up, if that makes sense. Basically, the sandbags were partially buried after emplacement.
@sirrathersplendid48253 жыл бұрын
Straight lines are a bit of a no-no in trench design, as the blast from an explosion will travel long the trench; also any enemy getting into the system can produce devastating fire by firing down the trench. For this reason all trenches were made in a series of zig-zags.

To make trenches more realistic you should make them zigzag to stop enemy troops from being able to shoot straight down them also you could add some bunkers similar to the ones in WWII
@BroadswordWargaming4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would look good. This isn't a very big board (it's kill team sized(, so I didn't have the room for zig zagging trenches without clogging it up too much. I will be doing this on a larger board, so lots of zigzags and some weapons bunkers and stuff would look awesome. 😁

I mean, it's being used for killteam really and those boards aren't very big. You don't have room for 90 degree turns and bunkers without over crowding the board. I have plans for a mega board using 2x4 sections. 😀

What about some add ons for this trenches? like artillery and heavy artillery emplacements, a headquarter emplacement... bunkers, machine guns (heavy bolter) possitions... improvised walls (like sandbags)... Or what ideas you may have to use those icecream sticks, not those old fashioned which are just a large thing rounded in its start and end, but those ones that are more of an 8 shape...
@BroadswordWargaming4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes, there is certainly a lot more stuff you could add into these boards. 😀 This one is relatively small, and I didn't want to over populate it.. but razorwire, sandbags, gun bunkers etc would all fit nicely. I will do this on a 6x4 at some point and add other things in, smashed rhinos and all sorts. This was my first attempt at anything like this, so I wanted to keep it simple and effective. I did play with lots of ideas, but honestly, if you're going to build one, just try stuff. 😀

Where might I be able to buy one of the boards you used in this video? I’m really interested in making this idea a reality for my Kill Team games, now that you showed the full process and gave firsthand tips on this kind of project.

Which board? The base of the board? Its 3mm plywood, cut to size, then I've glued/screwed some wooden strips around the edges and glued cheap polystyrene into the centre.
@blixsholden55754 жыл бұрын
I heard somewhere that you can use a blowtorch to hollow out polystyrene
@BroadswordWargaming4 жыл бұрын
You can! It makes the foam really solid. Definitely something to do if you want nice, subtle undulations. 😀

Those are barricads not tank traps just so you know. Tank trips are basically giant jacks, like from the game from ages ago. Still looks great though!

What brand/colour of tile grout are you using?
@BroadswordWargaming4 жыл бұрын
I used brown tile grout, made by mapei (sold at b and q), but you could use any tile grout brand really. 😀 Just buy the colour for the one you want. I did a sand board and used ivory, and when I do a city I'll be using grey. 😀

I just concern that would that amount dirt and debris would affect the stability of minature on the board?
@BroadswordWargaming4 жыл бұрын
Nah, the board is relatively flat. I did make sure the models could stand everywhere, just to be sure. 😀

IsopropANyl?
@sirrathersplendid48253 жыл бұрын
@@janeblogs324 - Isopropyl alcohol, also known as Isopropanol. You should be able to buy it online fairly easily, or failing that in a computer hardware or service store. It’s a standard means of cleaning computer components and equipment. I bought some online myself a few months back - 1 litre cost me just €2.50 excluding postage.

Do it! You can use pretty much anything you have laying around the house for groundcover, just make sure you mix it in with some grout. I used ash from the fire, soil and some concrete/cement chunks from a broken bit of floor haha. Any question, don't be afraid to ask! 😀
