I got to see Jinx perform with my husband and this song had us both tearing up. Theres something raw and real and familiar in Audrey's dream to us, as a pair of queers who grew up poor. The idea of a dishwasher or a garbage disposal was genuinely fancy for me as a kid, and now as an adult, owning a home seems so far away. And I don't really know where I'm going with this, and I know this song and the whole musical is a comedy, but there's just something that really hit me, hearing her sing this and feeling a lot of the same feelings Audrey feels. May we all find our little green place someday.

This is a genuine question, Jinkx Monsoon appeared on RuPauls Drag Race. Isn't the whole point of drag that it's males dressing as females (or vice versa)? If Jinkx Monsoon is female doesn't that mean she had no right to appear on the show in the first place? Apart from that this is a fantastic version of one of my favourite songs.
@heyheyhey408 ай бұрын

@@mickram23 jinx had self-described recently as transfemme
@Haittavero8 ай бұрын
@@mickram23 drag as an art form has always had trans women pioneering it. Drag is a lot more nuanced than just the typical idea of cross dressing, it's performance art which centers themes of gender. It can be used to celebrate femininity/masculinity and point out the way which those two are social constructions and not biological ones. Like a drag king will walk and move like a man, but seeing a cis woman do that makes you realize how that is learned behavior and not stemming from "nature" or biology. Drag can celebrate gender like in Jinkx's case where her inspiration is obviously people like Judy Garland, Patti Lupone and other old school divas. In her performances you can see how she celebrates the gendered way in which they hold themselves. Basically drag is a very broad concept but most people only know it as "man in a dress" but there's a lot more nuance in it if you study the history of drag performance. Hope this makes sense to you.
@funnykindagirl9477 ай бұрын
Jinkx is trans-femme, I believe, but nevertheless drag can be performed by trans women, cis women, non-binary people, cis males, whatever… It is not just simply men in a dress. 😉

The beauty of this performance really lies in how lost in the idea of pure happiness comes and then the sudden return to reality we get. Jinkx really allows themselves to get lost and brings the joy in Audrey up until the character remembers that this is just a daydream, not something that could possibly happen to her. The acting is so on point and its honestly something I am so saddened that I'll never get to see in person. This is one of my favorite musicals and Seymore is one of my dream roles to play. I've loved this musical for a long time and I've always loved how performers and the audience interpret Audrey. The things that always stick out in my mind are these interpretations: Ellen Greene's Audrey sings this song with a deep seated belief that it'll never come true. Kerry Butler's Audrey is more optimistic, honestly believing it can happen for her some day. But what they both have in common is they don't seem ashamed to be believing this when singing it to the chorus girls. Jinkx did something I've never seen since I got the feeling her Audrey seems embarrassed to be dreaming of this, like she's beneath it. Leave it to Jinkx to bring something so brand new to a role that's so beloved.

I’ve felt the lyrics of this many times in my life, and means a lot to see it played out on stage from a person I relate to. What does it feel like to be lovers with a guy but only in secret, while all your friends parade around school with their girlfriends and boyfriends? What does it mean to grow older, seeing your friends settle down, get houses, marry, have kids, knowing that this probably isn’t on the cards for you as a queer person. It’s so interesting that this song was written for a woman, but these are also feelings that lgbt people have felt for centuries. Talent aside, I think that’s why this performance is so outstanding.
