When we are training our bodies, we must also train our minds. In the journey to advancing in ballet, our mind needs to adapt and grow as much as our bodies, if not more.
Here’s the thing, without a positive and powerful mindset, we won’t be able to stick around long enough in our ballet journey to see real progress. Without an open mind, we won’t be able to experiment and try the new things that are needed to change habits and learn new patterns. And without a healthy relationship to our inner critic, we’ll just frustrate and torture ourselves until ballet isn’t fun anymore.
Let’s dive into how to have fun working on the details of technique, how to enjoy ballet, and how to keep coming back for long enough to actually make meaningful progress in your dancing.

💗I know it resonates when there's tears coming to my eyes. Isn't it great to have ballet come into your life as part of a healing process as an adult dancer instead of having to handle this inner voice in your very youth.... always look on the bright side of it.

So, so essential. Without the mindset first, no further progress will materialize. It is the forefront of it all.

Somehow this came up in my recommended videos today, and I think it was a divine gift or something. I shed tears listening to this. I never thought someone could understand what I go through with this subject so well… I am the person you’re talking to in this podcast. I’ve been dancing for 4 years, and I am SO proud of the path I’ve made for myself and the progress I’ve made. There’s no guided program for adults. I am responsible for my own progression, and that is SO HARD sometimes. I started going back to some advanced classes in my area because I know I need to do it to improve, and I will improve, but feeling like the worst in the room is one of the most emotionally challenging things I’ve ever experienced, and that is BECAUSE ballet means so much to me. But it’s so worth it. ❤️

And now YOUR comment made me tear up! Thank you for reaching out, for your love of ballet, and for continuing to make it work even while change continues to sweep through ballet for adults. You're not alone, and I hope you keep fighting for what you love! Ballet is so worth it. Happy dancing :)

@@BrocheBallet thank you so much for your kind words ❤️ (I am Rebekah releve on Instagram by the way - I know we have interacted before but I don’t know if you remember me 🤣 ) I really love your content and what you are doing for adult ballet. I agree it should be as common place as spin class or cross fit. Please don’t give up. ❤️

@@rebekahnewman3876 I do remember you, and in fact, was so super bummed when you left social media. I'm really glad to hear you didn't quit ballet entirely. It was heartbreaking to watch so many give it up over the pandemic, and I'm really glad to hear that you found a way to keep going :) Together, we'll make ballet commonplace soon enough, I can feel it!!

@@BrocheBallet I haven’t given up!! Social media was really hurting my mental health. I am considering coming back soon and only following fellow adult dancers. Even just seeing all the ultra thin professionals and treating them as aspirational was harmful to me, I had realized. But I will be back soon! ❤️❤️❤️ thanks for remembering me 🙏🏻

@@rebekahnewman3876 Goodness, I'm so used to generally ignoring the pro ballet world in my pursuit of adult ballet, that it never crossed my mind that our dear sweet adult ballet community friends could be scrolling and comparing themselves to these dancers!!! Now that you say it, it makes complete sense, but it hadn't crossed my mind. I hope if you do make a return to social media, you'll build a really healthy and aspirational feed for yourself. And thanks for opening my eyes to a whole new way to continue to support our friends online :)

This was fantastic 😍 I started your Journey to Pointe course today, because I somehow woke up this morning feeling more committed than before. It's funny how the mind changes and grows over time. I will probably need to listen to this more than once, because I often have that negative, perfectionist voice. Learning not to listen to it as much though. 😊

I'm so happy to hear that you're feeling the commitment today! It is only from that commitment that progress will begin to form. Keep coming back to the episode as those thoughts pop up -- you're not alone, and one day, those thoughts will disappate. With practice, it gets better and better! :)

This resonates so very much with me and I so needed to hear this! I love the idea of pushing for more to see how much we have in there…not as a punishment. I use these ideas in music and now finally applying them to ballet. Thank you for these wonderful podcasts. So many of us need to hear them.

I'm so glad this resonated with you and will help you continue to build as beautiful and healthy of a relationship with ballet as you have with music. When I say "happy dancing," I truly mean I want you to be "happy" while you are "dancing!" And maybe with this episode, we'll be one step closer to that :)

This is spot on. You have to remember to think about the things you can do well while working towards those bigger things. I am thankful for the technique tips as I did not come through an academy. Those tips are vital to progress.
