It has to be mentioned that the 49er line is ranked somewhere in the mid 20’s related to pass pro. That Purdy has had the year he has statistically, with mediocre pass protection, is remarkable.

very true but I feel like with the amount of motion & play action they run combined with the much maligned (especially by JTO) 7-step drops they utilize, the narrative of this line being “bottom third” might be slightly overblown.

Exactly. It's an especially good point considering that BECAUSE Purdy has been playing behind that line this whole season, it makes sense that at the first sign of 'possible trouble' that he'd leave the pocket to go create. If he knew 90% of the time he could sit back there and bake a cake, then he maybe he'd approach each and every pass play very differently

It could have been the 4 pics but Brock has nerves of steel and was still making big plays in that game after getting picked. My theory is that the stingers took a little of the crispness off. Same basic thing happened after the concussion with the losses that followed. If that is the case, it should be cleared up for the playoffs.

I think having these experience (seeing great, mediocre, sh*tty defenses) will help him. Certainly he can take more risks against lower rated defenses, versus you just can't play the same way against, say, Baltimore.
@BeingButterfly
@BeingButterfly 6 ай бұрын
I don't think a quarterback that's played the game since he was five years old suddenly got scared of throwing the football because he threw 4 interceptions in a game. Instead I think Brock is working on disciplining himself not to be reckless with the football. You see this also playing out with defensive players going for big plays but end up missing a basic tackle. Fred Warner was talking about going for big plays trying to make them happen instead of being elite at the fundamentals and allowing the big plays to come. It's this way with Brock Purdy too. Discipline focused on the fundamentals and the big plays will present themselves.

With the Niners offence, Purdy doesn't need to be a hero. He needs to protect the ball, move the ball downfield, and execute. That's it, that's all that's required of him. When he does that, they win. I'm probably guessing this was the main discussion in the locker room after Baltimore.

It’s easy to forget this is only his second year in the league. The Ravens really shook his confidence. I may be wrong but it would be hard to believe he is hesitating just a tick more because of the interception. Out of all the young guys playing this year it seems to me he is under more scrutiny due to his outstanding performance early on and the talks of him being “great”. He will be great because of his mind set and work ethic, but he is still developing the skill set to deal with adversity.

If I had to guess on that scramble (2nd minute of the video), where CMC is open down the seam, I think Purdy made that split second decision to bail because the pocket was collapsing. And/or, his coaches prepped him this week to bail sooner instead of looking for the HR ball downfield after that BAL game. Throughout the entire body of work of this game, you can see that Purdy's yards per attempt is down to like 7 yards or something, instead of the normal 9+. I think it has to be the coaching and the play calling, to emphasize on taking those safe medium gains, including QB scrambles for 3 or 4. Don't take a sack (negative play), and don't turn it over. On the 2nd analysis (incompletion to 44), my guess is choosing between a single man coverage down the sideline, vs Aiyuk back up the middle where there maybe a safety lurking (i.e. Kyle Hamilton last week), had Purdy choosing the safer choice on the outside. Anyway, easy for me to say =) ... Also, that clear route by Aiyuk at 21:10 for Deebo, I'm guessing Purdy didn't expect the safety to misplay that to leave the HR ball to Aiyuk open, so he wasn't looking for that. I think after seeing Baltimore's secondary last week, it kind of elevated Washington's safeties this game lol ... Purdy gave them too much credit, and you can see why Hamilton is voted Pro Bowl and why Baltimore's defense is so highly rated. Anyway, great stuff JTO

In the first play I think you're exaggerating when you state Aiyuk is running wide open. Is Aiyuk open? Yes. Is Aiyuk running "wide open"? No. Considering Brock Purdy just came off of a 4 interception game, I have no issue with him not forcing a pass to Aiyuk in a less than desirable passing window. There is a defender crossing over in front of Aiyuk at the same time another defender is side-by-side shadowing Aiyuk. How in any football reality does this equate to Aiyuk running wide open? It doesn't. He got the first down. Live to see the next play. This is what I see.

JT - someone FINALLY asked Shanahan in his latest presser why he does your favorite McCaffrey side shuffle pre-snap motion. He said is it about "watching how it moves the defense and getting people out of positions and watching their adjustments. They adjust to it and you see what it does." Are you buying that? As to why Purdy, and maybe the team as a whole weren't as sharp - Early morning east coast game for a west coast team off a short week. Guys are never as sharp, especially at the start. The reduced practice window means the timing on those tight window throws don't have the same muscle memory, so that leads to less structure more improvisation.

I've been saying that for a while now. Nearly four years as QB 1 at Iowa State. That's pretty rare nowadays. Top prospects leaving for the draft before their senior year, or not starting very much as Freshmen sitting behind other star quarterbacks. With QB competition at the collegiate level being what it is, it's amazing to hold the starting slot that long. Served him well in command of the huddle. Holding teammates accountable, all that management stuff.

One thing to take into account is he just played a 4 interception game. He probably passed on some of those early opens when he saw the flashes of red coming, helps avoid ball deflections by d-line and he may remember how he got injured against the eagles. I think above all, he’s trying to only make throws when he knows he’s not about to be deflected or sacked.

IMO on the last scramble drill play, if purdy tries to force it to Deebo it likely gets batted or tipped. The defender was right in the throwing lane. After the ravens game I can't fault purdy for not tempting fate there. However, it was pretty clear that the niners wanted to play a clean game vs a high scoring game given the opponent not being very dangerous. Hopefully this got Purdy his mojo and confidence back.

This gives the 49ers much less incentive to trade him, but it's still an option if he decides to hold out or if he wants more than the Niners are willing to pay him. If the plan was for Purdy to play this game a bit extra safe, then he did well to do that. I noticed that some of the bigger plays in this game, that Brock elected not to take (or missed out on), would have had a slightly higher element of risk to them - so, maybe the plan was to 'if in doubt, play it safe' to help stay in good control ? Either way, it helped him bounce back well and he and they are holding the 2nd best record going into the last regular season game.

I know this is late and will be buried/forgotten but this was absolutely a game where you could feel Purdy inching back to gain his confidence after the nightmare on Christmas. He flew too close to the sun, got a little too cocky with the ball and he paid for it against maybe the top defense in the NFL. This was a safe, get-right game for him - for better or worse. That Deebo look on 3rd down where he air mailed it to the corner for Aiyuk is the EXACT look he had on his first pick vs the Ravens in Q1. The one where he pulls up and checks down to Juice rather than take a shot to Aiyuk down field in the first quarter, is one of his first throws back from being benched the week before. Honestly if he went out there with the same Josh Allen-esque arm arrogance during this game after being broken against Baltimore, it might have been even more concerning. He got back to basics, back on the horse, and he delivered the dub and the resulting 1-seed (with help from the Cards). The kid is a gamer pure and simple. His super power is in his prep work and film. He's able to read defenses very quickly so that he can throw with that anticipation we've come to know and love from him. This is necessary to his success as a passer because he doesn't have the arm of a Manning or Mahomes. He's got the game IQ though. But if his rhythm is thrown off, that's where he struggles. It's those games that Kyle then needs to step in and jam 23 down the opponent's throats before the game gets outta hand. Purdy needs to figure out how to get his groove back and make that comeback. It's the one piece of film we have yet to see out of him. How can he respond to adversity, can he re-think approach mid-game? I'm very excited for the future of this team as this guy continues to learn and grow. He needs to avoid major injury, pick himself up after bad beats, and keep learning. He's got the book smarts, now he needs to work on his pivoting.

The play around the 18min mark is probably done cuz he tried that against the Ravens on the first drive and threw the pick; this time he stayed with the corner to stay safe and not lose track of the other safety that could have closed the gap on Deebo's window. Again, on both plays if the in was the #1, that's a win.

Purdy is the player every team would pick first to throw that pass .... that is his superpower, he doesnt win with WOW , he wins with consistent, accurate, smart throws that humble a defence

Wow that first play you showed I can see how he turned down CMC wide open there. Perhaps a result of the Baltimore game, he said himself to get more first downs and not try to be a super hero but here that was a big turn down. He's developing still and perhaps he'll learn when to run vs gun better. He is also recovering from a stinger, perhaps that's affecting his accuracy a bit?

The only thing I would note, as an explanation more than an excuse, is that this was an early game on a short week. I felt like the imperfections of the first half were particularly a result of that. While it's true they knew that ahead of time, and it's not the first time they've had to do it, bodies are bodies and less rest means less precision.

Part of Purdys greatness is his decisiveness. It’s better to just make a decision and go than to worry about absolute perfection every play. I know the film room is for pointing out the imperfections, but it should also be noted that he’s playing at the highest level No QB sees everything, what makes the greats great is their ability to stay on schedule

Two questions real quick. Mind you, I'm an avid fan, I love studying the minutia of all of these plays and decisions, but by no means have I had any actual professional background in the game itself. 1. At 18:27. My question would be, wouldn't Purdy have to layer that throw over the safety's (#31 I believe) head in the end zone for Deebo to even have a shot at it while he's running behind him. Seems like a real tough throw to make, especially coming off the 4 INT performance last week, including the first one being in the red zone. 2. At 28:13. I totally get that Deebo is open for the first down there, that part makes sense. The thing I wonder about though is, there's 2-3 defenders ready to absolutely MAUL him as soon as he catches that ball. Meanwhile, he knows that Aiyuk is running that little corner, but if he can extend the play, he still has him one on one in the end zone, and thats ultimately what happened, and then resulted in an easy touchdown for Aiyuk Again, totally get the schematic reasoning for each play, and you outline it really well as to why one option makes more sense than the others, but I just had those two curiosities about those particular plays. Thanks JT, keep up the good work!

Yea the first one reminds me of Purdy's first pick against the Ravens. I think he'd have to throw it real early and hard before Deebo is out of his break--but it doesn't even look like Purdy was looking there.

Bottom of the screen on the first play - Deebo’s route looks bizzare, he’s shuffling/backpedaling to the sideline and nearly collides with another receiver. I think there was someone running the wrong route, which might have muddled the picture for Brock. It just looked off on that side

Purdy is human. After a bad game, it's not surprising he played a little more tentative than usual. Having 3 weeks off, Purdy isn't going to just sit around. He will use the time wisely to improve himself.

I think on some of these missed opportunities 2 things are happening: 1. Purdy doesn’t trust his line to hold the pocket long enough so he reads super quick and then gets it out to the first yes before the pocket collapses on him 2. I think he literally may not be seeing some of these opens because the linemen are blocking his vision.

You would think by now that Deebo would have been talked to by his teammates. His effort on plays where he doesn't expect the ball is disappointing. Also, I wonder if Purdy is still feeling the rush from last week against the Ravens. Trent Williams aside, his o-line against the Ravens was in his lap all game.

3rd and 10 on the TD.. Purdy wasn't settling for a field goal, hence not going to Deebo. I think he made the right call, if this was an incompletion they were in range anyways might as well go for the 1st down option.

Frankly, I'm more interested in your take on Brock's play against the Ravens. On the first pick, the defender hid behind another defender and mimicked his moves, making him hard to see. A classic play. The others were tips by Kittle or defenders. Defenders were in passing lanes so at least some of that is on Kyle for play design. And Brock was trying too hard instead of working through the progressions, after the first pick.

I wonder if receivers don't got 100% just so they have gas in the tank for the whole game. I remember something Kendrick Bourne said back when we had Emmanuel Sanders as a receiver, he said that Sanders taught him how to play WR and last more than 3 or 4 plays. I mean yeah you can hit the cardio in the gym but also not every play needs to go 100% either.
