Because what doesn't kill me doesn't kill me is such a better line than what doesn't kill me makes me stronger so glad they changed it

Yes. Same with the entirety of Natalie's verse. Mostly lyrically, but the end of her verse in the completed version has more momentum that the Off-Broadway one.

Watching this again and I can't get over how well the directors pulled off having Diana being the only one to see Gabe without us realizing AND also putting details that on a second viewing make it SO obvious. She forces Gabe away when Dan comes into the room, to us she's trying to keep him out of trouble when she's just trying to appear healed to Dan so unknowingly forces her hallucinations away. Gabe is the only one that she completely makes sense to him as opposed to Natalie who's disturbed and frustrated when Diana speaks to her and Dan who humors her but straight up does not understand, Gabe is a hallucinated coping mechanism, he's literally just there to comfort her so of course he understands her and makes her feel normal. Gabe is the only one who gets a normal sandwich (Natalie's is shoved in her hands with a separate bag, Dan's is the plastic bread bag in between bread) because she didn't really make a sandwich for him. There are only three bowls set out for Diana, Dan, and Nat but it makes sense because Gabe needed to be to school early anyway. She knows his whole schedule because it's all in her head. After Dan stops her sandwich making on the floor, she looks at Nat and Gabe and tells them to leave for school so they're not late. It looks like she's talking to both of them to us but Dan and Nat just see her talking to Natalie. This show is so clever, I love it to pieces.

It really is genius for first-time viewing. I only just discovered the show (which is astounding considering I was exclusively surrounding myself with a lot of theater kids in high school when this debuted) and I'm obsessed. I also noticed when Gabe collects his sandwich and Natalie walks in, he says "Good morning, sunshine!" like Dan does moments later, and upon first glance one could assume they have a teasing brother-sister relationship so naturally she'd ignore him but to those who know better, he's not there.

This musical is honestly so under appreciated. Every bit of music is so perfectly intertwined with the book. I feel the reason it's not as big as it should be is because there is a lack of 'big hit' numbers in it. It's a shame really because it's such a masterpiece.
@martylauter44443 жыл бұрын
It won 3 Tony awards, it was the 8th musical in history to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama, and was wildly popular at the time of its release, I wouldn’t exactly call it under appreciated 😂

@@martylauter4444 True mate - I guess I'm speaking from a British perspective - it's not as well known over here as others. But you're right - Awards wise it certainly WAS appreciated.

About the music being intertwined with the book, it's probably the biggest upside to having the librettist (Brian Yorkey) step into the lyricist role as well. It's not extremely commonplace in musicals that aren't sung-through, but it should be, it makes for way better cohesion in the narrative. It might be weird to bring up Starkid musicals as an example bc they're not exactly high art, but basically all their original shows share the same 2 writers for the book while switching lyricists almost every time, and in shows like Black Friday and Firebringer, the disconnect between the two narrating voices is very apparent.

It's a little hint at her conditions. The sexuality keeps appearing throughout the show with the doctors, although they toned it down when they moved onto Broadway.

My only complaint is the overt sexuality. "I'll be up for sex in a minute." 1) Who has 3 am sex on a school night 2) Who tells their daughter that theyre going to have sex. 3) Who says things like "I'll be up for sex" But I love it. so intense.
