I've been pushing for team-based pro disc golf for a while now. The manufacturer side makes the most sense, but I'd also be interested in regional teams as well. I've often wondered if you pitted the top 4 plays from each state against each other how it would play out. Top teams would be Colorado (Eagle, Goose, Freeman), Arizona (Uli, AB, maybe Ricky?), Georgia (Robinsons, Joey Buckets, Harris), Iowa (Gavin, Gannon, Callaway), etc. Could be electric. That being said, I think there is a potential on-course issue where you need to ensure that you don't have cards of all players from one team. Players will have incentive to not call their teammates and call their opponents. So you need to either pay for officials on every card, or split up the cards to where the same teams don't play together.

RPM has S tier naming, all named after New Zealand native birds. Kiwi, Kea, Kōtuku, Piwakawaka, Tūī, Kotare, Ruru and the stamps are Māori inspired versions of the birds.

Back in the day in the surf world, it was Hurley, Quiksilver, Billabong teams surfing against each other. Now it's basically one company that owns most the names.

I think an interesting effect of the manufacturer team angle would be an increase in the importance of people finishing at places 5-10 at tournaments. At the moment, it feels like if someone isn’t on lead card or making a run for podium then their finish matters very little. This could add more intrigue to those off-podium slots

I actually think this is a fantastic idea for disc golf and for building brand loyalty and introducing a new way to promote multiple pros vs just one individual. This could even start on a more semi-pro level before being introduced to the pro tour. For example, having a Discraft Underground team, just be team Discraft, versus Prodigy's underground team as team Prodigy. That way you can experiment with the process and introduce up and coming players at the same time. Also gives more content variation to the disc golf consumer. I really think this should become a thing. Especially after playing college disc golf and having that team/school loyalty and having rivalries against other teams in your conference.

@16:40 i think it would be so cool if somehow there was two members on say team innova that had there own championship specialized discs, they could release a double stamped shirt with both disc designs superimposed on eachother. Ive always been fascinated by how cool double stamped discs look. And they are usually cheaper. But the artwork is more unique and gives a one of a kind feel

I love this idea. Would really help the guys who play good golf but aren’t as brand friendly or marketable. We are about to see a lot of good players go unsponsored next season and this could remedy that. Also imagine battles for the final roster spot of each team. There could be huge storylines down in the 20-30th place range as the lower team members fight to earn a spot on next weeks roster / fight not to lose their spot.

Agreed, but being that they didn't even really know what MVP's theme is just shows they don't know all that much about them. Their names aren't "electrical" themed, the theme is physics and being that they pride themselves in R&D it fits perfectly.

Let’s merge manufacturers cup idea with regional circuit idea (that Josh from the Upshot mentioned). Divide the tour into 5 regions (West, Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, and Europe). Each regional circuit will award team and individual winners/points. This will accumulate for season points totals. Potentially one major per regional circuit (I.e the finale for that region) You can only select 4 players to be included in team points totals per event so you strategically select players based on course style/experience/etc.

Great idea Brodie! I think if the sport went into this format, you would allow fans of a brand to have more stake in the sport. Like at the end of the year, instead of just people winning the events, you would have manufacturers winning and/or losing. I think this in turn would have more people having brand specific bag of discs instead of a Frankenstein mix of different manufacturers discs because at the end if the year, they would want to be bagging from the winningest manufacturer.

Just look at how supercross does it. Still have an individual champion and individual points as well as the team points. Team points are (i believe) just used as an internal bonus in the company. But would be perfect idea to implement the manufacturers cup that way

ANOTHER IDEA TO BOUNCE OFF BRODIES THOUGHTS... The pro tour runs a collegiate doubles format tournament for the companies! Discraft sends multiple teams, can stack 4 of their best players on the same team, and so fourth.

I think if they ever ran it as just a special event once per season, that didnt affect anyones pro tour standings, not many are gonna take it seriously and its just going to feel like a bunch of casual rounds with tournament rules.

I love the idea of teams. But, have the teams not based on manufacture but on team captains or mascots like every other sport. Then the plastic manufacturers could negotiate with teams along with other commodities (bags, drink, etc.). Teams could build fan bases based on location and personalities.

I agree with diminishing returns for manufacturers to sign someone, but there is a point where it’s worth it again. Think of bags. If Simon eagle and Ricky use a pound bag and the entire rest of the field is using grip bags, grip is going to sell more bags by a long shot. The perceived quality and value becomes so much higher if a large percent of people you see are using something.

@ the manufacturers cup would be based off of the solo results from players week to week, similar to the manufacturers cup In formula 1, it would not be a single event like the all star or presidents cup.

I have an idea of have as many people in the field as you want but the sponsor must submit a list of X amount of their players they want to count for that tournament. This is submitted at the beginning of the tournament and can't be changed. They would do this each tournament and would allow them to have 20 sponsored players but only be able to pick like 5 or something. Would also give incentive to players contracts if they earn their sponsor points. NOW this also could be a sponsor cup as well. Hear me out now. We allow other outside sponsors like Nike and Adidas in the future and they don't make discs but want to host a "team". So they now give contracts to players separate of manufacturers even. Could be a way to grow the sport in the future even further if your ideas was taken and it started to take off. I only say this since the money a manufacturer can give out each is low and we have to think about some of the smaller ones. This idea really could take off and there are tons of ways you could make it work.

I've never thrown a Prodigy disc ... but, I think their "family of names" / naming structure makes more sense than anything anyone else is doing. Is it exciting, "No". But, it makes sense. Who know what randomly named discs (teebird, challenger, justice, ion) are supposed to do. Whereas, if I understand their letter+number structure, I can kind of determine what a D3 is supposed to do.

along with what brodie is saying as well you could have all your players practice the course maybe a week in advance get stats. and then choose your players moving forward from that. i think team aspect could be huge, it would also help some of the guys that are looking for serious disc manufacture sponsors as well. would be good all around imo

With this idea you can let manufacturers have as many players as they want but only the top "x" number of players are counted towards points. This lets breakout players earn points and extra cash for good performances while avoiding larger teams from earning a crazy number of points with a massive team. The extra players that don't earn points, then act as buffers, pushing other players down the leaderboard but not soaking up points.

I believe a team based competition is good. I think tho that disc manufacturers may not be right approach. For every individual the discs that work best for my style and needs are not as much based on mold an plastic but much more based on things I don’t hear talked about like arm length, finger length/girth, finger strength, hip/wrist/forearm flexibility. Manufacturers just can’t produce something for everyone. Also, what about open bag players who play better by piece-meaning discs that suit them, how do they get ‘ sponsored’ into your tour? State alliances are intriguing but how would it work for Simon, Europeans, Canadians etc? Maybe you outside sponsors to draft players? A card should include only 1 player from a team, like number ones vs each other, same for 2s, 3s and so on

Teams could have as many players as they want. But there should be a GM that picks a line up of 5 players and top 4 scores of them count but the other players not of the top 4/5 can take higher spots from other manufacturers top 4. So like Discraft goes top 5 then innova top 2 goes 6 and 7 then disccraft gets top 4 and then innova 6 and 7

Okay I gotta say the whole disc golf clubs vs disc golf discs, I choose discs for very specific flight characteristics. It's not brand allegiance or something. It's literally because that mold flies that way. Sure I can throw a destroyer or a rive and get similar results, but the fact that I can use a disc for specific flip points and amount of turn or fade to suit my specific game is what makes me want to check out different brands versions for a specific slot. In golf it's very very basic. A 9 iron is always going to feel and hit like a 9 iron, but firebird's and raptors for example, feel different and fly different while both taking up the same slot. Also I'll die on the hill of gateway names beings S tier. 🤷🤷

I do wish they’d do more college like or team formats or best shot doubles kind of stuff which could bring manufacturers into play. But I’m perfectly comfortable rooting for my favorite players.
