The NHL is basically two seasons , the regular season to qualify to get to the second season the Stanley Cup playoffs ..The Presidents trophy acknowledges the accomplishment of a season who is the best regular season winner . There should always be some kind of recognition for a great regular season.. Sometime the best record doesn’t alway win , but it’s why they play the game and the football phrase of on any given Sunday applies to every sport .. My vote is to keep the Presidents Trophy ..

Right? 82 games is no joke of a season in full contact sport. Its also exactly why I like the 16 team playoff format for a 32 team league, and would hate further expansion (though 2 teams could and should get relocated). The season goes from 32 teams to 16 to 8 to 4 to 2 to1. nice and orderly.

I disagree they should get rid of it. I actually think in a league where (if there is/was true parity) you're team would only win the Cup twice in your lifetime (or once every 32 years) winning your division, having the best regular season record, and winning your conference should be seen as accomplishments much like winning an FA Cup or League Cup are in the English Premier League. Winning those trophies aren't as important as winning the Premier League or Champions League but they still hold value and winning trophies (any throphy) matters.

Let the # 1 seed/best regular season team pick their first round playoff opponent like the PWHL does
@moonytheloony65163 ай бұрын
I don't buy into curses. That's what people say when they can't explain something. A long time ago, teams started to participate in late-season trade deadlines, right? Well, that means that the 8th-seeded team, with a unremarkable record is now actually better than what their playoff position suggests, so the matchup of the best team in the NHL vs the lowest seeded team can be misleading. So I bet that explains some of those 30 failures out of 38 attempts. The league has 32 teams and a very long season so I wonder if there is a mental burnout from the grind of playing dominant hockey for an entire season...then you have FOUR rounds of best of seven to look forward to, which is potentially 28 additional games to play making it a likely 100+ game season. Meanwhile a lower seeded team can be fresher so even if that Presidents Trophy Winner gets past the first round, the team waiting for them in Round II can still have better energy to kick them out of it. The trophy is fine. Not awarding it doesn't solve anything. It's just a trophy awarded to the team that's earned home-ice advantage for all four rounds. The NHL, historically loves it's trophies...Art Ross, Vezina, Jennings, Norris, Calder, Lady Byng, Conn-Smythe, Prince of Wales trophy, and the Clarence Campbell trophy for both conference champions back in the day....they love it, so the Presidents Trophy is in line with what the NHL loves to do . What I'd like to see is the elimination of points awarded for overtime losses. Awarding failure is ridiculous. Awarding a point for a tie previously was rather dumb in my opinion as well. You either win or ya lose. Two columns. The NHL is always trying to be weird unnecessarily. Also, I never liked playoff overtime rules...it's drawn out way too much. One overtime period followed by a shootout is more than fair and less time consuming and I would assume less physically/mentally taxing on the players and coaches. Triple OT games and Double OT games are too much, these are the practical changes that should matter more, instead of considering the legitimacy of logic of a trophy given by a elaborate trophy-happy league.

The stat about 63% first place teams winning the Cup from 1967-1985 really needs to be evaluated on the merits of the league during that time frame. Only 5 teams won the Cup during this 18 year period (Montreal - 8 times, Islanders - 4 times, Boston, Philadelphia and Edmonton 2 times each). Those of us who were around, know that the Canadiens were virtually unbeatable winning 4 straight, as were the Islanders in their 4 straight. The Broad Street Bullies and Gretzky’s Oilers each won 2 straight. Since 1986, the league has grown by 11 teams (a little more than one third), add in the salary cap and now you have greater parity in the league (which appears to be what ownership and the league wants). I’m not opposed to eliminating the Presidents’ Trophy, but it is kinda fun looking at it as a curse. Maybe adding a monetary value to the Trophy would be an enticement, but getting home ice advantage seems to be incentive enough. By the way, Chicago’s win in 2013 was a lockout shortened season where they only played within their conference until the Finals.

While not directly disagreeing with your point, the fundamental issue is that the Presidents’ Trophy is awarded to teams based on how they performed under the regular season rules, as administered by the officials. Once the playoffs begin, the teams play under a completely different set of ‘no autopsy, no penalty’ rules as administered by the officials. When you call the playoffs differently than the regular season, it’s no surprise when the best regular season team doesn’t win. Why would it be? The rules were different.

I honestly could take or leave the trophy. Doesn't really matter to me personally. The big flaw with having a top team "choose" a first round opponent is if two teams are fighting for 2 wild card spots, they'll be fighting to see who gets WC1 to avoid that top team. If the top team just chooses their opponent, what's the point of fighting for position and winning down the stretch? If one of the higher seeds has a slew of injuries at the end of the season, that top team could also choose that opponent because of the injuries. Also, can we talk about some revisions for MLB? You mentioned raising a banner for the Presidents' Trophy might be a little too much if you didn't win the Cup. How about MLB teams celebrating with champagne after every single round, even advancing out of the Wild Card? Champagne should be saved for a WS win only. Also, I've mentioned this before, but have there been discussions on ending the split individual awards for AL and NL? There's universal DH, and each team plays each other at least once a season. There should be 1 MLB MVP. They can have 1st and 2nd team Gold Glove and Silver Slugger

As far as the Pres' Trophy winners losing in the playoffs, if they get rid of the Trophy, people would still talk about the top team losing regardless. The only difference is they won't have the Trophy to target as the curse, just the points status. If it has any influence, it's psychological. The teams that are determined to win will win regardless. Blaming the Trophy is a copout, in my opinion. But my team has never won it and has beaten the winner 3 times (I think) in the playoffs over the years, so maybe I'm not the right person to comment. I like the idea of giving a monetary reward though, although some guys need it more than others. Home ice advantage is the real curse for some teams cuz they play better away than at home.

Why not change the rules for winning the Presidents' Trophy? Sorta what they do in European soccer. Since teams in Western Conference play each team in the East twice (one home and away), those games will be included for the standings. For divisional and conference matchups, the teams last home and away game will be included in the standings. For example if Winnipeg were to play Dallas 4 games in a season only the Winnipeg's last home game and away will be included in the standings. You will have the 32 teams play each team twice. This will give a total of 62 (31 home and 31 away). This would take away the advantage of stacking up wins against a weaker division opponent.
