Hello Mycophiles, in today's video I give you all an update on the poolover shoeboxes! These are the first grows I'am doing since fully switching over to brown rice (aka "Broke Boi TEK"). We are also starting to get pins on the oldest shoeboxes, which were spawned just 6 days ago!
Everything is moving very fast, which is a great sign. The grains were inoculated on 6/15, spawned to bulk on the 23rd, cased on the 24th, and now pinning on the 29th. That's literally 2 weeks from inoculation to pins! This is the power of strong healthy spawn, genetics, species (poolovers are very fast) and high-quality grains.

I'm glad you are transparent and honest with your subscribers. A lot of new people to mycology are overwhelmed with the information and equipment that is "needed" for the hobby of mycology. I always tell people the simplest methods are always the best! If it works in nature or was a used method from the past, it's for a reason. Minimizing the variables helps ensure healthy fruit growth without the chance of introducing any contamination to the container, at the very least it's minimizing the opportunity for it, regardless if it's a shoebox, monotub, or tent. Less is always more in the field of mycology! I also tell them SAB's are the way to go because laminar flow hoods are so costly, I have used a still air box for years now because of how well they work and only about 2% of the time something contaminates. The biggest and best tip I have for newbies is (hydrated lime) make a solution with water and use that because it raises the ph slightly but helps prevent mold and bacteria from growing (contam.) I just make sure they know to handle the lime with gloves and only use a small amount because it doesn't have to be concentrated. Now that I've said my piece I hope everyone is enjoying a good life and happy with their new found hobby!

Sage, love your channel and I always eagerly await your "next episode"! I am new to this hobby and endeavor to learn everything I can. I am a perfectionist that is notorious for overthinking everything and in doing so, I tend to overcomplicate things. Perfectionism, it is my quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of my greatest strength and greatest weakness. Anyways, I'm curious about the word "anaerobic" that you use to explain the conditions of the mushroom substrate/environment prior to fruiting. I know anaerobic means without air/02 but I am curious to know what this means in mushroom cultivation. Thank you for any light you can shed on this for me and I appreciate everything that I've learned thus far. Sage, the Mushroom Master!

@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
Hey Martin, perhaps far off in the future! And that’s because the results have already been known for a long time that white rice pretty much has no nutrition compared to brown rice, so it is very low on the list of grains for mycology. I would try to get brown rice, or pretty much any other grain.

I have a great tub with pins and I put into fruiting but the pins aren’t really growing. Temp about 75. But I guess I just need to patient. I used to only most sides but just started to mist substrate with a fine mister. It’s been 5 days in fruiting and pins are just slow I mean slow growing. It’s my 3rd time. First 2 got contaminated but no signs at all so far. I’m just anxious about screwing it up again. All the tub time lapses show pins to fruit in like 5 days and it’s been 5. Still little pins. A lot of them but not taking off. Any advice.

Sage answer this question the best you can. I have a dish of S.N.A.P.E. it's a nice dish I mean beautiful. I have transferred it three times and when I think I got it clean. Sure enough, I hit the fruiting stage and the fruits start I get a batch of the green bastard. Maybe if I sent you a cup you can get it clean because I can't. No sign of contam of any bacteria in the dish. Yet every time I fruit it it goes green on me. Let me know if you have any ideas or if I can send it to you to try out.
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
Sounds like embedded contamination, or your grains. Those are the 2 primary suspects. I’m assuming you’re using a non-nutritious sub, in which case it would not be the cause.
@Timewontstop4u
@Timewontstop4u Жыл бұрын
@Mycophilia Sage, so is it possible for mycelium to carry a contamination. Another way to ask is. Will certain strains carry a bacteria with it. Or hold on to a bacteria as it is transferred. Maybe transferred to a plate that had a contamination. Then the mycelium it's self caring that contamination and show that contamination on other transferred plates, culture, etc.

So my grow bag is currently growing mushrooms. Put the slits in the top of the bag. Currently have long work days. So hard for me to manually introduce FAE to my bag. So I leave a handheld fan to blow fresh air into one side of the bag and it blows air out the other side. Should I mist the sides of the bag? Concerned about drying out. Also thinking about moving it into a monotub. Any advice? Thx.
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
You should primarily mist the substrate. Check out my “Proper Surface Conditions for Fruiting” video. You want your substrate to look like that. Do not manually introduce FAE, the holes will give plenty. Completely unnecessary to fan, let alone use a fan. Just provide good surface conditions and they will be fine.

What’s your opinion on ketchup cups for agar?
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
Inferior to disposable petris in almost every category but not bad for what they are. They are cheap and accessible, kind of a pain to pour though, and their size is small and visibility lacklustre. They are good though for tiger drop inoculations (basically you can just squeeze the container to drop the puck into a jar or bag). This makes it ideal for agar inoculations, say you have a regular petri, and you use that to inoculate a bunch of kcups, which will then be used to easily inoculate grains.
@hockey_boyz6414

Thanks for responding. I was thinking of trying ketchup cups for my first time just because of the price. The only thing I’m concerned over is if there are sterile out of the bag? I found someone on Amazon that sells 200 for $30 with the size 3.5 oz but I don’t if one I open the bag they won’t be clean/sterile anymore? Do you have an opinion on this? Thanks.
@Mycophilia
@Mycophilia Жыл бұрын
@@hockey_boyz6414 Yeah you will likely get some that contam. That’s why I was saying they’re a pain to pour, at least one of the reasons. If I were you I would just buy a 500 pack of petris and save yourself the trouble. They’re not that expensive and will make pouring a lot easier and smoother. Especially as a beginner, you don’t want to make things more challenging than necessary.
