This is probably the best Doctor Who channel because it has actual backed up opinions like with the Robots of Death, where many people view it as a classic but it's really overrated. And this channel also has a massive focus on expanded media like Big Finish and Prose whereas other channels may just focus on the TV stuff. For every person that wants you to stop mentioning the audios, there are 50 people who think that this use of expended media boosts the channel over any other.

On the subject of 8 losing his memory, there is one brilliant way of how they pulled it off, and that's with the aftermath of 8 destroying Gallifrey. Once he loses his memory throughout the second half of the EDA'S, he becomes a mirrored version of how the 1st Doctor from An Unearthly Child-Edge of Destruction: unpredictable, willing to stab people in the back and violent. In The Burning, you're left to believe that 8 would save the villain from drowning, and he does pick him up, but then suddenly he pushes the villain down with the most blank expression and leaves him to drown, despite his agonising pleas. Or how he uses Alan Turing's sexuality as blackmail, knowing full well that Turing was infatuated with him, so he can stay by the Doctor's side in helping him get back home. Or how he was willing to leave his companions to no longer exist in reality in order to save and fix an alternate Earth. Yeah, people tend to forget, but 8 is soooooo much more darker and manipulative than the 7th Doctor ever could be and 8 may be the most terrifying incarnation because of that. The fact that there's no Ian or Barbara to hold him back, but 8 does learn to grow and try to redeem himself. This is how you do a memory wipe arc, and as a result, it makes the second half of the EDA'S perhaps the greatest run of Doctor Who since the Troughton era.

2:36 One trait I think that has remained stuck with 13 that they should build on is her over-reliance on tech, she uses it to get out of situations more than her other Drs. Now you may be thinking they just have her use the sonic to resolve the plot because they can't think of other ways to do it and I would definitely agree. But where this actually became a character trait is Can You Hear Me. There we have a villain who contrasts her in terms of abilities (magical powers and psychology) but they also turn her greatest strength against her, just putting her in a room filled with technology and let her go to work, freeing the eternal. And the ending of that ep shows she's definitely better with tech than people and words. Then there's Ascension, she tries to uses tech to exploit cyber weaknesses when that fails so quickly she's demoralized and spends the rest of the episode on the back foot. Other traits I would say are stubborn and suppressive but your criticism of them just affirming that she is the Dr rather than building on these potentially interesting traits more is more than valid.
@nightowl84774 жыл бұрын

The sheer weirdness of the Eighth Doctor Adventures (books, not the audio with Lucie Miller .. although Series 4 really is one of the best succession of stories in DW canon imo) is exactly the flavour of Who I wished the Chibnall era would bring in. I might be one of the few that really love the era right now (Fugitive of the Judoon is basically the Alien Bodies of New Who, let's face it -- done right, we could get the TV equivalents of bangers like The Year of Intelligent Tigers in the future, who knows), and I want the show to fully embrace what it *could* do. Visually speaking, the show's never been better, and the show could really do some more weird, out-there concepts if they tried. Like Can You Hear Me -- more unique episodes. I kinda want someone like Michael Kirkbride (a writer for the Elder Scrolls games in his time) working as a writer for the show.. it'd be next to implausible, but still. Imagine if the guy who basically wrote Morrowind's entire lore and thought up of a god figure who bit off the penis of a rapist demonic deity and used it as a sword (!!) and achieved CHIM (a state of being where you basically break the fourth wall and realize that you're a character in a game) wrote for Doctor Who. It'd be insane.
@Elementa20064 жыл бұрын
I decided to do some research on the Amnesia 8th Doctor adventures online and BOY! Did I go deep down the rabbit hole, to the point that I discovered there was a 1997 novel called The Stranger written by Portia Da Costa and published by Virgin Books (of Virgin New Adventures fame) after they lost the Doctor Who license, being part of their Black Lace range, it was an erotic novel featuring a thinly-veiled copyright-free version of the Eighth Doctor falling for the novel's protagonist Claudia Marwood a rich 42-year-old. (No, I am not making this up.) And the crazy thing, Lance Parkin referenced events of that novel and Claudia as a companion in his two of his official Eighth Doctor Adventures books, "Father Time" and the final novel in the line "The Gallifrey Chronicles" basically canonizing it within BBC's official Eight Doctor Adventure novel series. *deep breath* The Wilderness Years was definitely the period where people wanting to write a Doctor Who story went, "Screw It, Let's Go Nuts!"

At least in the cases of The War Master and River Song audios, the Doctor isn't supposed to know who they are/what that version of them looks like for plot reasons already established in the show. Those amnesia cases are almost needed so it doesn't spoil things for the Doctor when they meet them as the Tenth Doctor. (I JUST realized as I was typing that, for the Doctor, seeing both Yana/War Master and River, and retaining that info, happened as Ten. Weird, but okay.) I haven't listened to the other stories, but I think the Doctor doesn't need to forget things THAT MUCH.

3:52 You're right, but it's a little more complicated in context. The Gallifrey Chronicles doesn't end with the Doctor's memory restored, or Gallifrey restored, or even the alien menace, the Vore (that name...) defeated! But the pieces on how and why that will occur are laid out, the Doctor will use Compassion and the genetic tank technology from Intereference and Dead Romance to restore the Time Lords and when the Matrix is out of his head, he will get his memories back, in a novel where the theme, and first line, is "The Doctor wins" so you go away feeling like you just read Act 1 and 2 of a story and now it's telling you to imagine Act 3. That was a decision that made a lot of people mad at the time, but Parkin had to leave it open enough, at least the Time Lord bits if not memory, for the TV show to do whatever it wanted (which turned out to be destroy Gallifrey!!). The Gallifrey Chronicles isn't my favorite Parkin, but it is one of the best examinations of the Eighth Doctor's constant memory wiping. Here, in the Earth Arc, the Doctor believes he lost his memories out of shame for what he did and learns that by putting the Matrix into his head, he was actually making a sacrifice for his people, and in doing so, forgives himself. It is very proto Day of the Doctor. Neither bring back Gallifrey on screen or on the page but both suggest it is possible down the road.

Guys... if canon doesn't matter, and anything is possible if someone can make something, would that count SuperWhoLock works? It may burn in hell, but with as many crossovers exist with the official stamp of approval from the trademark, it burns still, horribly, but alive. Lingering.

I despise the gifs, which are my only exposure to the programme. Those men have unlikeable faces. I know they say "pie!"

@@SamyulDavis Pie is indeed one of their character traits. There's an arc that should fill up 15 seasons

@@SamyulDavis I am being overly harsh, S1-5 were good to great (Season 5 showing the best depiction of the devil in fiction) but it was originally meant to be ended after 5 seasons and it shooooooows. It was halfway through S12 I said "you can't keep going, you are not Dr Who"

ehh, just because the doctor had amnesia doesn't make the timeless child shitty writing invalidating the point of the show. edit: at least 8 had a decent excuse, for bad writing.
