I actually love the story of how UCSC got the Banana Slug as their mascot. When the school started participating in the NCAA, the student-athletes wanted to be The Banana Slugs. The administration thought it was stupid so they put it up to a student vote. They thought sea lions were going to win, and even started building sea lion statues over campus. Banana slugs won out, and so now during Homecoming Week, they dress up the sea lion statues as Banana Slugs.
