Oh it totally is. Years ago our landlord refused to fix the gaping holes in the roof of our apartment because he said he couldn’t afford it. 1:00:05 hi, I’m a therapist. Here’s a rule about self-care that I tell all my clients. There’s nothing wrong with “a little treat” as a form of _reactive_ self-care (today was extra awful or my boss yelled at me so I’m going to get some ice cream) IF you are also engaging in regular _proactive_ self-care (therapy, journaling, physical activity, health care, clean home, etc). My rule of thumb for good, long-term, impactful self-care: It shouldn’t be easy. You won’t always want to do it. You will sometimes have to muster up every ounce of energy you have left after a 12 hour shift or a rough week to clean your room or write in a journal or go for a run. But if it’s good self-care, you will feel good after and you’ll be proud of yourself for having done it.

She seems to not want to pay it off, but hoping for someone else to feel bad for her and pay it for her, when it is her own fault she is in this position in the first place. I lived in my new apartment for 8 months without a fridge and for 4 months I slept on the ground without a bed and mattress in order to save money. Dude, I do rental property, and I have had similar conversations with young single parents. One lady had three children. She received lots of child support, and she worked two jobs. I tried to help her buy a house, but my mortgage broker friend told me that no legitimate bank was going to loan her any money. She failed to tell me that her credit score was about as low as it could get. She was overextended on credit, and she bought a new car EVERY YEAR. It was hopeless, and then her on-again-off-again boyfriend got arrested. Then, her ex-husband sued for and won full custody of their children (i.e., no more child support). Such a freaking mess. She moved out at some point, but she still calls me at least twice a year to ask for advice. There is more hope for another tenant who recently got a great new job. I am encouraging her to start a 529 for her son and open a Roth IRA. She is always behind on her rent, and I think she parties too much. She could get it together financially, but first she needs to focus on what is truly important.

People very much do not understand what "writing off" expenses means. It doesn't make it free. it reduces your taxable income. So, if you write $10k off and your taxable salary is $110k it would be reduced by that write off to $100k and your annual income taxes (if we're doing a simple calculation) goes from $19,442.50 to $17,053 (a reduction of only $2,389) and it's only really that high because i accidentally chose salaries that cross brackets. Bottom line is that, if you are writing off a $10k expense, that does NOT mean you get $10k back. You get a percentage back in reduced taxable liability.

I get it in theory but I've never done it. If you need a car to get to work and you cannot afford several thousand units of currency in one hit, a car loan makes sense. What doesn't make sense is people buying cars on finance that aren't the bare minimum cost to do the thing you need to do. Caleb is right about getting a 10k car, paying as much as possible up front and paying the rest on the lowest interest loan you can get approved for. As someone who went to law school- there were plenty of parents in my class (including single parents and people who had children during their degree). They all are making law careers work alongside their family needs. That said, it takes a heck of a lot of planning, support, and sacrifice to do. It can be right for some people, but probably isn’t right for this person in her current circumstances. Things may change (especially in a few years when her son is in school or if she is able to cash flow it) that will make it a good decision.
