This video did not turn out the way I wanted it to, for numerous reasons. For one, notice how the player didn't ask about finding a door? I realized only while recording that, like a moron, I had PUT a door right at the end of the corridor. There were a few clumsy, easily fixed errors like that which you can spot throughout the video, mostly due to me just being too tired to fix it. But there's also a bigger issue that I'm pretty upset about: The smith was supposed to have a full-blown forge setup. The metal would get cold, and he'd heat it. Each strike would have it gradually take on its finished shape (which it actually does, I did get THAT in there, I love blend shapes), and when completed, he'd sharpen it on a grindstone, put it on a conveyor belt to be delivered, and fetch a new piece of metal and start over. The reason I didn't do all that comes down to one thing... The model of the Broken itself. As you can see, it's a little... unconventional. Which presents a unique problem with animating it. All parts have to move as one, but slightly out of sync. The solution I've gone with is that they all have a set position within the rig which they gradually move towards at different speeds, causing the current effect. But the problem with that is that they're not actually finishing the animation. The pieces take shortcuts, so to say, and thus the animation ends up awkward-looking. I need to find a way for them all to perform the animation correctly, only with different offset for each piece. Not to mention some persisting issues with how lighting reflects off the pieces and so on... Long story short, this model is a pain to work with. As a result, I'm keeping animations with them to a minimum since I'll have to redo them all later on, once I eventually figure out a nice and convenient way to achieve the intended, fractured effect. This limits what I can do with them in upcoming previews, so the factory won't seem as busy as I would like... But oh well, this is the risk I run uploading these so frequently. Sometimes, unforeseen issues will either cause delays or a reduction in quality. I chose the latter this time. Hope it's not a big deal to anyone but me.

adrian de la cruz will craft remember monster school?
@WillcraftAnimations5 жыл бұрын
adrian de la cruz Nope. Another flaw in the model is the lack of flexibility. I want them to be somewhat visibly restricted by their bodies, but I don't want them "has to swing hammer sideways" levels of restricted. So I'm gonna have to split them in a few more pieces so they can move a little more naturally. Still awkwardly, but not this awkwardly.
@derpyderpdederp6205 жыл бұрын
Will craft, could you make a model that looks exactly the same, but instead of having to animate each piece separately, you can make the pieces you need removed simply transparent, but still part of the whole figure?

You're sticking to what your vision is for the story and the message you want to convey I see. I commend you sir, and I hope it's worth it. I have one question, why talk to me and answer if you have no choice?

As a guy with minimum coding and animation knowledge, this is all pretty impressive for one guy to make. I really like the idea of the broken being 100% aware of how they’re being mistreated but simply choose not to do anything about it because, what else can they do? It’s not a story trope I’ve seen often. Although I don’t really know if I find it all that suitable for them to use “fucking”or “literally” as they initially seemed pretty monotonous and emotionless. But maybe I’m just missing a few pieces. I can’t wait to see how the broken tie into the fleshy humanoids being crafted in body building, and where all those bodies and crafted material goes.
@WillcraftAnimations5 жыл бұрын
Those bodies in Body Building are actually the same ones, just prior to being broken. If they look like fleshy humanoids to you, then... the lighting/video quality must've been obscuring things more than I thought. As for their speech patterns, they are indeed monotonous but not really emotionless. Just... compliant and jaded. They're generally pretty crude in their speech too, something they get from their ruler. But we'll get to that when we get to it.

Willcraft Ah I see, I guess i must’ve been misremembering. Nevertheless it does indeed look like I’ll need more context to fully understand this world and its inhabitants, can’t wait to see what you come up with next. Each of these videos are always so intriguing.

Woo, new preview! As always, the writing and world-building for each preview is spectacular. Each character is imbued with interesting perspectives, all adding on to the narrative. It's fun to see how those perspectives manifest - each character presented so far has a familiar theme of oppression and hopelessness, but all of them have a unique take on their world. The Mired possess an amount of contemplation about them; they spend most of their time stuck in one place, and experience a desire to go to other places, to experience new things that aren't just the same thing over and over. They each have a given purpose, but they desire something more out of it, even though they know that trying to act on such desires would be foolish. The Oracle had a similar line of thinking, except that his situation lead to him not just wanting to leave his current situation, but wanting to disconnect himself entirely from it. To recede back into his mind and recall bygone eras, back to when he saw more than grey. With these new peeps, they're similarly under oppression, but they don't have the capacity to decide for themselves what they want. They're automatons, given a set purpose, and without it they're nothing. They don't really desire to have freedom or to experience something different from what they're forced to do, but rather they take pride in the fact that they were given something to do and continue doing it. Even if it is painful for them, the alternative would be to be seen as defective, and thus probably shattered fully into disconnected pieces and melted down to make a new, more useful cog in the machine. I can definitely see what you may be dissatisfied with, though. The forge that the Broken works in is pretty empty and could definitely use some clutter. Even if the system you wanted to implement into it can't be done, some barrels full of stuff, tools for him to switch between (even if he doesn't interact with them), that kinda thing. Certainly looking forward to the next preview though! It's always pretty interesting to see what you come up with, and hopefully you find a solution to the Broken's mobility problems.

Having a broken metal person named "Broken" reminds me a little of the Pilgrim's Progress, which is very appropriate for this project. Not to keep throwing recommendations at you, but have you read Before the Law? The way that people interact with the protagonist in such a distant manner while mostly minding their post (which is even true of the first dialogue you showed) is very much like Kafka's writing. Edit: Are you at liberty to say where the name Axtor came from? While it looks Latin, it doesn't have a clear etymology, and it doesn't seem to be an anagram, either.
@WillcraftAnimations5 жыл бұрын
I actually went out of my way to make sure that the names of each ruler of the Intraverse do not have an existing meaning behind their name. Not derived from any particular word, no anagrams, just me trying to come up with something that sounds like it'd be suitable. I wanted to ensure that the names don't invoke any associations other than the characters themselves. ...Given how many words there are out there that's nearly impossible and none of the names are FULLY original as a result, but I don't think a lot of people know that there's a woodchipper that's also named Axtor. As a result, the name really just comes from my own linguistic knowledge and preferences. I used existing words to a degree, but either just copied the general structure of it or maybe a syllable or so. Axtor in particular is based on the name Baxter, probably the most derivative of the three. Not for any real reason, I just liked the sound of it and, with some tweaking, thought it made for a good combination of sounds/letters to represent the character. And I haven't read either of those books, but I'm usually down for recommendations, no worries there. I don't seem to have the attention span for reading anymore though, so there's no guarantee I'll pick anything up whether I want to or not. I was big on reading when I was younger, but especially since depression hit I just can't seem to commit to a book. Yet the list of books I wanna read keeps getting longer...
@ThePennerman5 жыл бұрын
@@WillcraftAnimations Kafka created shortstories, some longer, some shorter. Maybe a few of them such as Before the Law could fit right in your remaining attention span for reading.
@MopedOfJustice5 жыл бұрын
@@WillcraftAnimations Thanks for the explanation on names! I think you succeeded with what you were going for, in that case. Looking at it, I mainly thought of "axe" and "actor." The axe one is actually fairly appropriate given the etymology of the word "decide" ("to cut off"). I'm not sure I could really recommend Pilgrim's Progress in good faith to most people unless they were really into stories like Journey to the West or the Divine Comedy. Looking at the summary on a Wikipedia page or something would probably be fine for seeing what I was talking about. Before the Law, on the other hand, is literally only one and one third pages long, so it only takes a couple minutes to read. Because of that, I do recommend checking it out. Kafka has a few really good stories that are about as short.
@WillcraftAnimations5 жыл бұрын
Looking into Pilgrim's Progress is on my todo list now. I checked the Wikipedia page but decided to actually READ it "later" which of course meant I never did it. I did read Before the Law however upon discovering just how short it is. Pretty interesting stuff. I'm not sure about the intended meaning, but I can think of multiple potential meanings which in and of itself is all I ever ask for. A big part of art is the ability for it to be interpreted in different ways, after all. Might put reading some more Kafka on my todo list as well. A mix of lacking motivation and overall poor memory makes it unlikely I'll get to that soon though (The top item on my todo list is "check todo list" which I regularly fail to fulfill). Anyway, I'm just glad to have a viewer with such seeming interest in literature and linguistics. The topics are rather close to my own heart, and seeing it applied on these videos is a delight.
@MopedOfJustice5 жыл бұрын
@@WillcraftAnimations I'm glad you like Before the Law! I think it has a coherent meaning that ties most of its elements together, but it took me a while, and I have a bias towards certain lines of interpretation because of depression. If you want another similar Kafka one that's just as short, there's An Imperial Message. In any case, I'll stop adding to your backlog for now. I am eagerly awaiting your next update.
