We have 'Easy-Outs' in Australia. Drill a little hole, stick it in there and turn to the left. If you can't get one, stick an allen key in the vice, heat it up and make a l/h thread out of it. Quench in oil. Grind tip so it goes in your hole.

I actually have two different sets meant for extracting broken fasteners, one like you described, from Mac Tools (although just like this: store.snapon.com/MultiSpline-Extractors-25-pc-Multispline-Extractor-Set-P644746.aspx ), and another from Snap-on that grabs the outside of the fastener: store.snapon.com/Hex-Head-Fastener-Extractors-13-pc-Hex-Bolt-Extractor-Set-P644735.aspx

Matt can you do a video about sharpening drill bits. I had to drill some bolts out and my drill bits went blunt a bitch to drill it took for ever. I tried to clean up the drill tip on the bench grinder but fucked it up. I just made it worse lol. Iam sure there's an easier way.

@mxdev63877 жыл бұрын
I would be surprised if it works, but if you have had success with this method, good on you. Can't imagine that a smaller bolt wouldn't just snap in the hole. I normally start with some heat from a propane torch, whack on the nut/stud with a hammer to try and break corrosion, get some locking pliers as tight as they will suffer and hammer on the pliers. Either that or a stud remover tool combined with heat.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but with that much sticking out would it not be worth heating it up and trying a stud extractor?

LOL! My best way to do it when you cant weld or get it out is: get the right tab for the thread and the right drill bit for it. Make it so you hit the center of the bolt to drill a 2-3mm hole all the way till the end of the threads. Take a drill bit that is slightly smaller like 0.2mm smaller then what you need for the thread tap. Drill it in and you might be able to remove all the left over threads out of it. Take the tab and clean the threads care fully to get the right threads. And use some stupid oil for drilling and taping if you don't have the shit on your hand. Better then dull drill bits and tabs. Happy New Year you muppeteer!

Happy New Year,,,,, before people drill,, Irwin bolt grip nut removers, there a socket type tool with revers left hand tooth fluting that grip the broken bolt or stud as you turn them, and use heat around the bastard.. if there's rust use a good spray like plusgas first and let sit over night.. then there's weld a nut on it, the heat will help loosen it a bit,, iv always welded a nut on broken exhaust studs and got all of them out over the 25 years of repairing them. last resort is drilling, and try and get it dead on. iv used the Irwin bolt grips a lot and had a breaker bar on them as well, always worth the investment to keep them in your tool box for emergencies, well better than relying on mole grips, you get a lot more leverage on them,

Not had a notification lately, I don't know if you tried this but what i would have tried is to thread two nuts on it of the appropriate size then lock them together, I've also threaded a nut on and welded the top and got the bastards out that way, i generally only go the drilling and tapping if there is sod all poking out because of the drill bit wandering of center and fucking the thing up

I'd use a fucking big Sealey adjustable, then when its properly fucked, chew it to fuck with some "mole" grips. then probably put the whole fucking thing in a cheap pillar drill and use an angle grinder to chop the fucking thing off. You could then weld some chain to the frame and call it a street fighter.
@nickclark60017 жыл бұрын
Always drill a pilot hole first say 3mm, it guides the large drills and keeps them centred. Surprised you don't have a tap wrench,this greatly reduces the risk of breaking your tap off which will be a real problem!

Did you know that the late Richard Whitely (from the Countdown quiz show) compiled and published an Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus of swear words and expletives throughout British history?? Essential for any biker or mechanic attempting to deal with a broken or stuck bolt!! I have a plethora of things for removing the bastard things like stud extractors, etc. Cooking them them with the tip of a 120 Watt instant heat solder gun or sometimes the surrounding nut / metal block sometimes helps a bit (thermal shock). Geez Matt just buy a proper stud extractor. It would whip that out as quick as you could crank the ratchet plugged into it. Why do things the bloody difficult way?? You're not Del!!

This is a wind up - LOL
@CZ350tuner6 жыл бұрын
Nope, he was on a TV chat show, back in the early 1990's talking about the years of research and work he'd put into it. He felt that swearing is an important part of our language and needed to be studied. It is actually an academic book and is a history of using foul language in Britain, how some words changed, how some were lost, some are Anglicised versions of foreign swear words, etc. One example he gave was "Cobblers!!" is the version of the Spanish "Cahones!! (Balls / Bollox)" and was introduced by soldiers returning from the Peninsular War in Spain (where once again England beat the French in a war). Yes, it there really is a dictionary of just rude words. Published by Oxford Press, if I remember right.

Happy New Year Matt!! Just one question... why bother with getting a special "left handed drill"?? I've removed literally hundreds (if not a couple thousand) of screws over the years using just a regular drill and an easy out. A hole drilled with a "left handed" drill is just as round as one with a normal "right handed drill" so I truly don't see the need for a left handed drill. Can't really think of a valid reason either, but I'm sure someone made one up.... As long as the tap is left handed you're fine.... (at least, that's my humble opinion) ps, something that also grips screws/bolts very well, are sidecutters. Especially if some of the threads are exposed. pps. the copper spread... lmao
@dirtygarageguy7 жыл бұрын
Good question, and I'm sure I said this in the video but sometimes the drill will undo the broken stud. As the left handed drill bit digs in it is apply a counter torque, i.e its turning left (lefty loosey) If your gonna drill a hole to remove a broken stud and the drill backs it out then you've saved yourself loads of time. Its not about drilling the hole..... More about all this later - matt
@rikacable626 жыл бұрын
If you're real clever you can sharpen a normal drill to cut left handed.

I just watched Delboys tips for checking batteries using a DVM. Checking voltage drop on a 30/40 Amp Hour Batt on the bench with a meter that draws Milliamperes. Does he have a clue about anything. I wish he would do a bit or reading. A little knowledge is bloody dangerous.
