Plenty of critism on TJV tactics during TdF. In the end it looks like they were right. Because they didn't approach it by day by day. They laid down their tactits on the whole 3 weeks. So TJV their tactics in 1st week were part of their total approach in the three weeks.. And we know how many praised Pogacar and hailed TJV. A big compliment to TJV.. It is amazing to see how well prepared TJV has been and how well the health condition of all TJV rides still are. A big compliment for the teamwork.

Two years in a row that TJV team tactics were superior to UAE’s. And a different each year. The common element is using WVA as a human wrecking ball; forming a break, then working as a satellite rider to Jonas. UAE had no counter.

I would just like to say this has been the most fun TDF to watch this year. 10 seconds between the top 2 riders through 15 stages kept you on the edge of your seat for two weeks. Just an amazing time trial by Jonas. He said from the beginning that the third week was his and that the Tour wouldn't be decided by time bonuses. Seems like looking back now he knew something all the "experts commentators" didn't know.

Tadej didn’t loose the tour… Jonas won it! If you watch closely you can see that Tadej was exhausted even before the rest day… the accumulated effort simply broke him down, he went too deep too often and too many days. Jonas has a great team around him yes… but they can’t pedal for him. He didn’t win because of the team (only) but because he came prepared and religiously followed their plan. Tadej is a champion and if you don’t love him to bits as a rider I think you are in the wrong sport - his strength, humor and energy is mesmerizing but also part of why he is missing the last energy in the 3rd week. Jonas is gifted with an amazing natural ability to perform and recover, but I feel people don’t give him credit enough for his amazing bike handling. His downhills are spot on and especially the handling of the TT bike at high speed (cornering) is super high level! Can’t wait to see next chapter of this and seeing all the young talents out there developing in front of our eyes 😊

@@tonyg3091 "There is a reason this dude got booed at the finish of stage 17. People know he is a cheat and a fraud. Jonas is Lance 2.0" *sigh* No, people don't know. People will instead ignore that Jonas simply did a lot of things better or right, as compared to Pogacar. On the Time-trial alone: 1. More aggression in attacking the stage. 2. Better cornering. 3. Better descents. 4. Better aerodynamic form. 5. Didn't make a tactical mistake of switching bikes. 6. Paced himself better and didn't go down at the last bit. 7. Handled the heat better. Of course, you can't change the weather or your legs, but you can try to mitigate those things via ice/water and pacing. And not just pacing in that stage alone, but your pacing over the entire race so far. Pogacar and his team could and should have done better. ... That doesn't mean they didn't do well. 2 and 3 in the tour de france is a great performance, but if somebody else does the last 5 percent better, then it isn't enough to be number 1. Pogacar is an amazing cyclist and athlete and it has been amazing to see him in this tour and he has certainly given it his very best shot, but mistakes were made.

Congrats to Felix Gall who probably won’t get as much recognition as he is due because his win is sadly overshadowed by Pogacar cracking hard. Pogacar cracking was so sad to see, and hoping he can recover and stay on the podium. Christian Van de Velde was on one of the motorbikes (the peacock one)involved in that little blockage on the last climb. He was saying that the motorbikes were having traction issues on that stretch of road because of the steep gradient and a bit of gravel on the roads. Since the motorbikes were spinning the tires, the Race director car had nowhere to go. This did not appear to be knuckleheaded fans this time.

So, it's "calories" two years in a row? Actually Pog was dropped twice in the Tour last (the second time when WVA was the satellite ride near the top of the climb). I think we now have to say that Pog's weakness is long, hard, hot climbing stages. Two years running. Also have to say that TJV rode like maniacs for the past week in a contest to see whether they would kill themselves or UAE first. I think that is also part of what happened today. Why did they do that? Because that is what worked last year on Pog as well.

Jonas was incredibly strong on every single stage. He has done one tactical mistake going over the Tourmalet and thinking he could drop Pog right away, but he pulled him and gave him a lead out, losing 30 seconds. But even on this stage he was strong - just not tactically clever. On all the other stages he played it safe, staying on Tadejs wheel, because he had the lead and Tadej needed to work to get seconds back, not him.

Chris, that crash by Tadej did affect him but to me the real question is why did a superb bike handler make such a rookie error as overlapping wheels in the first 10km of a race? The answer is that he was distracted and not focused. There are likely a number of reasons that worked together to make him unattentive like that - sickness (observers noted a cold sore on his lip on the Jou Plane, he talked of eating well but the food ‘stayed in his stomach and never went to his legs’) and also the psychological shock of his huge loss the day before in the ITT. So the crash was the straw that broke the camels back but it only happened because he was not in full form. As to Simon Yates poor descent after crossing the last KOM he was asked about that and said ‘mate I was cross-eyed from fatigue chasing Felix up the mountain and could barely stay on my bike on the descent’
@bihlygoat
@bihlygoat 10 ай бұрын
I just re-watched the footage of Tadej’s crash near the beginning. Nans in front of him stood up and moved very slightly to the right. I think the crash was 99% Tadej’s fault, which I guess is good because it would suck if he got injured due to no fault of his own. But as most know, when you stand suddenly it throws your bike back. I’m not sure Tadej was overlapping wheels until Nans stood up quickly.

Everything you have been criticised Jumbo for is what they have been trying to do leading up to today’s stage. Making the race as hard as possible on any chance they got. They have been counting on accumulated fatigue by Tadej. As they expect Jonas’ recovery to be better. They did it last year and his shape was even better this year. That is why they are okay with being called knuckleheads. I know things didn’t go Tadejs way, and it was gut wrenching to hear his I am gone on the bike and he is still very much a champion. But can we also acknowledge that Jonas didn’t win as a result of Tadejs losses but because he was stronger and they came with a better game plan? No?
@marnixaerts8516
@marnixaerts8516 10 ай бұрын
I wouldn't use the word "better," but the team came with a solid game plan, and Jonas was stronger than ever before. However, Tadej did not seem like his usual self during the last week. Was it due to accumulated fatigue? Was it because of inadequate preparation? Or was he falling ill? His post-race comments about having stomach issues since morning and struggling to gain energy suggest any of these reasons could be possible. Did Jonas win because of Tadej's setbacks? I don't think so, but I hope to see them battle when both are playing at their A-game. It's unfortunate that we have to wait another year for that. Nonetheless, they provided us with one of the most exciting tours to watch.

@tonyg3091 I've never felt drained after a crash, I've actually set PRs bridging back to the peloton. Different injuries will have different effects, and I'm not outright disagreeing with him, but I also haven't heard of a crash-induced bonk - a high HR isn't what causes hypoglycemia; insufficient glucose fueling related to your specific effort does. I can however imagine a scenario where adrenaline would hinder your ability to gauge post-crash pedaling strength possibility, subsequently driving yourself into glucose deficiency. I would be very surprised to see that in the pro peloton, however.

Out of all the post race shows I watched during this TDF and specially yesterday and today all I see is people making up excuses for Tadej not being able to follow Jonas. Is not that difficult. Even after Jonas won last year's TdF it seemed like there wasn't a whole lot of fanfare around him. How the 4th best rider in the world took over and ended any hopes Tadej of winning. With that said, when Tadej cracked under the pressure, I started crying. This tremendous athlete, cyclist who won 2 tours of his own, through constant battle and determination, could not overcome the advantage that was Jonas and team Jumbo. Amazing. Opinion: Jonas is a hard worker, all year, and SERIOUS about his prep. Tadej is talented and trains hard but isn't serious about prep on the same level. And I think this year that made a difference. As did Tadej's injury and missed races. Plus the stages/course suited Jonas better, as did the weather. And want to reiterate about the TT: world feed showed side by side videos of JV vs TP on the same parts of the TT course. WHAT a difference. You can see visually, *easily* how JV was so much faster. He was pedaling downhill where TP was freewheeling. He was taking way way better lines (he recce'd many times, apparently?), and he was in the drops/TT bars more. Today he was also spectacular, and I'm convinced he's been riding smart and saving the hurt for these mountains. Just... wow. Impressed with a lot of riders today, but while I like Tadej & also others incl the Yates, I am happy to have long been Team Jonas.

I love TP and JV. However, Chris, you have got to finally give JV some credit for being the better rider this year. There are a lot of things that could affect TP, but your inability to accept that JV could be better is a blind spot in your analysis. Hind site is always 20/20 but Jumbo Vismo has pushed the tempo hard the entire Tour, why? because it plays into JV strengths. If they can tire TP out, which was observable in the last mountain stage before the rest day, then JV could ride away with the Tour victory. JV has always said that week three is his, because the plan was to exhaust TP, and it worked. Please give some credit to JV and the long term plans of the team.

Actually, I think Chris picked Simon of the Yates brothers. Now Simon has been really good and climbing up (pun intended) the standings (maybe 5th?). Carlos has really impressed with his consistency as a young guy. Adam Yates' performance is to be expected, he's that good, but always better when he doesn't have to carry the pressure of leadership. Adam should finish 3rd. It's been an amazing TdF - often is dull and controlled by one super-team. Not this year.

Terrific coverage again, Chris. I agree about the crash and the rest. I think I would add that it was, with that total collapse, perhaps a perfect storm of multiple factors. The wrist and recovery reducing his preparation for the hardest race there is, the crash for sure, and I have noted that Tadeg won two tours in colder wet conditions, and he seems to suffer more than Jonas in the heat. I have noted that when he has his jersey fully unzipped, it has always been a bad sign. So those upper 90's temperatures, which would also affect his ingestion of glucose and fluid, combined with the not 100% prep coming in, and the early crash on top of it, right before the queen stage with the hardest climb of the tour.......some days you have no luck. But Tadeg is class, and he'll be back. Thanks for your observations, wisdom and insight.
