I think we've possibly witnessed the absolute best cycling performance ever on the road, on par with what's done for indoor hour records. It seems everything's been optimized here, a rider at the peak of his form, thin as a razor, perfect equipment, perfect aero, perfect recon that let him be at the absolute limit in the downhill (it was hard to watch !). It can't really get any better than this can it ?!

Tadej did an amazing TT, even with the errors of a bike change. Jonas was on another planet, smart, focused and prepared. I bet he had this stage circled from the time the race was announced. He has really quietly progressed from one of the top-tier riders to certainly on par with the amazing (press-friendly and lovable) Tadej. I'm pleased that Chris has recognized this, but don't forget the way he has handled the pressure through all the days of this tour, his consistency, his bend-but-not-break mentality (maybe learned from Primoz). Yes, an amazing performance by both protagonists after 2 weeks of mind-bogglingly amazing performances. And I still put Tadej and Jonas pretty much on the same, astronomical level. We're not settled yet, but, it's Jonas'/TJV's to lose. One thing was curious about today's time trial at UAE. I quote Cycling News' most excellent feed: Here's what Mikkel Bjerg [UAE] had to say about the bike change and the climb... "If it didn't make any sense we wouldn't try the bike change. There's a lot of headwind on the last part of the climb so you don't go that fast. Maybe that also favours the road bike over the TT bike." Doesn't that logic seem to point to an even stronger case to use a TT bike? It seems that UAE made up their mind about switching bikes and were reaching for anything to support it. In any case, if Tadej hadn't changed bikes he still would have likely lost almost a minute. Great analysis as always Chris! It's been a Tour for the archives. Never seen one better!

Jonas is what it looks like when a singular focus is winning the TdF. He's said it every time he's had the chance this season, his focus is the TdF. I don't think he cares if he wins another race this season as long as he wins this Tour. The man has an iron will for sure. As for Tadej, he looked tired. I know they completely empty themselves for the TT but he's looked rough in previous stages. He did say he didn't feel as good on the second climb of this stage as he did the rest of it.

I think Jumbo paid WVA a bonus to sandbag the first half of the TT, to "head fake" TP into thinking he was doing great. ("Good job Tadej, you're ten seconds up on Van Aert. I don’t think WVA underplayed his hand (I also gave this a thought though) - and Pogi did afterwards say he felt he was doing really well at first getting time up on WVA - but then he got Vingegaard’s time… must have been a brutal psychological blow. His performance was still excellent - he never folded, but one rider was just a lot better today.

More that J-V's strategy was to launch the first climb (at least with Jonas, WVA seemed to kept something back), recover on the downhill and flat and then gas it on the last 6km uphill. WVA probably kept something in reserve because he knew this TT was on the edge of his ability vs pure climbers.

Ok Chris, I have so many thoughts about this stage I don't know where to begin. Going into it the most I could have hoped was that JV would limit any loss in time to a few seconds or at worst give up the yellow jersey and only trail by a few seconds. All this because we've seen what TP can do in an uphill TT. What we saw today was astounding. I don't want to say incredible because that would cast doubt on what all saw. JV demolished the field by a whopping minute and 30 seconds. I and I'm sure alot of folks didn't think he had that in him. We truly witnessed the arrival of a special type of cyclist. Can he repeat the performance? Only time will tell. And you're right, changing bikes for such a short uphill effort that eases at the top was a Knucklehead move on TP's part. Great analysis as always Chris!

I don't know why people didn't consider the TT last year. JV was on his way to a crushing victory when he had a close call with 3 km to go and eased up so WVA could get the win. @@patpat8727 well Jonas did gain 33 seconds from the last time check, so that would be around 64 seconds, but the Cervelo TT bikes that TJV use are much lighter than the Colnago TT bikes used by Team UAE, you saw the way Jonas was able to ride that thing on the downhills & curves, like a skier or a race car, there was a ton of added performance advantage in the TT bike, so on equal bikes & without the bike change, I would say the advantage would've been 30 to 40 seconds, just a guesstimate of course.

@rossmurray6849
@rossmurray6849 Жыл бұрын
The physics of bike throw relies on the centre of gravity of the rider plus bike rolling at an almost constant speed so manipulating the bike so that the front wheel is further in front of the centre of gravity will gain some time. Against that is the potential to lose time because the rider isn't pedaling all the way to the line. If the rider gets the timing right a bike throw will save some time but it's clearly possible to get it wrong.

Phenomenal TT by Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar was really good except for the knucklehead bike change. But while Pogacar took this stage like any other stage, you could tell that Jonas came prepared. Grisha Niermann the JV director sportif said they practiced this stage as early as April. And Danish reporters have seen Jonas yesterday morning and on the rest day repeatedly train the difficult turns and corners. That is dedication and professionalism. You could tell right away that he knew every bend and corner of the stage by heart like formula 1 drivers know a course. And Jonas has a perfect aero position. That isn't just by pure chance that is hours spent in the wind tunnel. And while anyone can assume an aero position, it takes months or years of training to be able to maintain such a position comfortably while performing. Again, dedication and professionalism. This makes a #1 rider, this makes a champion. Hats off to Jonas, what an incredible display of dominance in an incredible edition of the TdF!

Excellent as usual Chris 👍And about those 1st corner crashes - new tyres need scrubbing in (some more than others) maybe that was a factor too 👍

I am not a expert, but Vingegaard had a super day on the bike. He really looked switched on from the very start. At 28 seconds in, he already had a 3 second advantage over Pogacar. Factor in he rode with technical perfection in the fast sections, side by side you could literally see him going way faster riding perfect lines. Then factor in the bike change and to me the time gap seems not out of this world. He rode the perfect TT.

Nice ranking shift - better timing than the bike shift! On DK TV Vingegaard was asked the day before if he expected the TdF to be decided by seconds. To my big surprise his answer was: No, it’s not going to be seconds after the next next three days. Being his understated himself this was in fact saying “I’m going to put serious time into Pogi on the time trail & next mountain stage”. No way did he believe the difference would be this large, but during the TT was he was smoking those corners like no one else. Even at the first bend off the ramp he’s 2 sec up on Pogi! It was not all watts and weight, it was also being the technically superior rider.

I've been waiting...!!!! Had so much to say I put comments on yesterday's 🤣 OMG AMAZING TT. I saw a clip where VDV said he thought changing bikes wasn't a good idea because of the shift in muscle group use... I'd totally agree, sounds way too uncomfortable to me, and can anyone (except maybe Ciccone) say it bought them extra time? Doubtful. Wasn't the reason for the final result though. Almost no one has paid attention to Jonas himself saying third week would be his best. IMHO he was always saving something for today.

I thought Jonas would win by 10-30 seconds due mainly to the fact that Jumbo is so detail orientated in this discipline, and the Cervelo bikes are faster and lighter, but this performance was just 😮😮😮.

@@CFCMahomet No, first you lose speed in stopping, then the exchange itself, then the time you lose in having to get up to speed once again. So while the exchange may only be 10-15 seconds, the whole process of doing it at all will cost double that compared to not stopping at all and maintaining momentum, rhythm, and focus.

Our UK ITV reporter asked him about that after the stage. Apparently he was stuck in 54/17 which is why he was spinning on the flat and then grinding slowly uphill. I believe he eventually got a bike change.
